THE LITTLE BLUE BOOK Once again this year we have available copies of an Advent/ Christmas seasonal prayer reflection booklet entitled, The Little Blue Book. These are published by the Diocese of Saginaw and contain helpful daily entries to serve as an aid to prayer. Anyone interested in a copy of The Little Blue Book (Advent/Christmas 2016 edition) is asked to stop at the Parish Office. Limited supply available. The offering is $1.00. Today we light the rose candle on our wreath. This Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete, or Rejoice, Sunday. We rejoice because we are halfway through our four week journey to Christmas. Next Sunday, December 18, at the 10:30am Mass, we will thank Father Edward Janoch for his two-and-onehalf years of faithful service to St Charles Borromeo Parish. Immediately following the 10:30am Mass, there will be a Farewell Reception for Father Ed in the Lower Parish Hall. Veteran St Charles parishioners know that I very rarely mention second collections. Other than when the missionary makes an annual visit, usually in the summer, and for our Fifth Sunday St Vincent de Paul collections, I pretty much leave the other second collection requests up to your good judgement. You know which worthy causes are important to you. I do make an exception, at this time of the year, for the annual collection for the Sisters Retirement Fund. Those of us who are a little older remember with fondness those wonderful religious women who served in our grade schools, high schools, and colleges. They also taught catechism to the children who attended public schools. And there were Sisters who served as hospital nurses or in social work. Next weekend there will be a second collection for the Retirement Fund for Sisters. Please do what you can. Your help is needed and I know you will be blessed for your generosity. In the old days, the Sisters performed heroically for very little return in terms of wages and benefits. (I found a 1953 letter in our parish files detailing some specifics: back then the Sisters received $50 per month for teaching but they were not paid in July and August because they weren t teaching in the summer. It was not required, but if the parish was generous, a parish could provide the Sisters with health insurance for 25 cents per nun, per month! And the $50 monthly salary went to the Motherhouse, not to the individual nun!) As a sidenote, that s why we have grade school tuition today to treat our current employees more justly. Large numbers of younger Sisters took care of the lesser numbers of elderly. However, those numbers have reversed in recent years. There are fewer younger nuns but there are many ill and elderly. The Sisters need our help. They cared for us, expecting and receiving very little, now their need is great and we can now assist them. Please do the best you can next week in the second collection for the Sisters Retirement Fund. Did you mark your calendar for Christmas Concert next Sunday, December 18, with Friar Alessandro and the St Charles Children and Youth Choir? 7:00pm in church. A free-will offering will benefit Sister Denise Marie s Franciscans of the Little Way. Our 2016 Advent Giving Tree will conclude next Sunday, December 18, at 1:00pm. All gifts will be sorted and delivered at that time. This year we are helping Providence House (crisis nursery for newborns to age 6), West Side Catholic Center (provides food, clothing, and shelter for the poor and homeless), Open Door Re-Entry Program (serving those leaving prison/jail transitioning to useful lives), and Malachi House (hospice for the dying homeless).
