MAY 10, :00 AM 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Making God s Love Visible

6 TH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 10, :00 am Worship Today s liturgical color is red. This color reminds us of fire, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Just as we use this color for ordination, we use it on Confirmation Sunday as a way to represent the presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of our young people as they publicly confirm the faith of their baptism. WELCOME Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. Child care and worship education programs are available during this service. Consult an usher if you need an assistive hearing device or a large-print bulletin. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence your cell phones. Following worship, you are invited for a time of conversation and refreshments in Williams Hall. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY Toccata in C, BWV 564 Johann Sebastian Bach *CALL TO WORSHIP One: Let us worship the God of love. All: We are here to be planted in the soil of God s grace, nurtured with the strength of Christ, and watered with the Spirit s power. One: Let us abide in God. All: We have come to abide in God, so that God may abide in us and we may live in God s love. Let us worship the God of love. If my sinfulness appears to me to be in any way smaller or less detestable in comparison with the sins of others, I am still not recognizing my sinfulness at all.... How can I possibly serve another person in unfeigned humility if I seriously regard his sinfulness as worse than my own? Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #483 mit freuden zart Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: Holy God, All: We confess our lack of trust in you. We confess that we forget that we need you. We confess that our lives are more about anxious striving than about abiding in your love. Silent confession [2] *Those who are able, please stand.

One: Life-giving Vine, All: Forgive us and remind us daily that, apart from you, we can do nothing. Help us to put our trust in you so that our lives might bear much fruit. We pray in the Name of Jesus the Christ, Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt: diademata God, bless your church with life! May all our branches thrive, unblemished, wholesome, bearing fruit, abundantly alive. From you, one holy vine,in freedom may we grow; sustain us in our mission, Lord, your love and peace to show. (tune may be found as hymn #151) CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION NEW TESTAMENT READING John 15:1-8 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God. God will be constantly crossing our paths and canceling our plans by sending us people with claims and petitions. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community SERMON Pam Driesell The Promise of Fruitfulness vs. The Pressure of Success *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE stuttgart To the members of Christ s body, to the branches of the Vine, come to us, your church assembled, in our midst as gift and sign. (tune may be found as hymn #1) CONFIRMATION AND COMMISSIONING Presentation of Confirmands John Ryan, Olivia Hartley Laurie Coleman, Clerk of Session Reaffirmation of Baptismal Covenant The vows the confirmands make this day, affirm the baptismal vows their parents made on their behalf when they were baptized as infants. [3]

*Affirmation of faith We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. We believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Apostles Creed Prayer Blessing and Anointing Prayer Gustav Holst ( ) was an English composer and conductor. He is most famous for his ground-breaking orchestral suite, The Planets. (1917). His early works show the influence of Grieg, Wagner, Richard Strauss, and fellow student Ralph Vaughan Williams, and later, through Vaughan Williams, the music of Ravel. Holst composed almost 200 works, including operas, ballets, choral hymns, and songs. An enthusiastic educator, Holst became music master at St Paul s Girls School in 1905 and director of music at Morley College in 1907, continuing in both posts until retirement. [4] *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE salzburg Holy Spirit, Lord of love, who descended from above, gifts of blessing to bestow on your waiting church below. Once again in love draw near to your servants gathered here; from their bright baptismal day you have led them on their way. When the sacred vow is made, when the hands on them are laid, come in this most solemn hour with your strengthening gift of power. Give them light your truth to see; give them life your own to be; daily power to conquer sin, patient faith the crown to win. (may be found as stanzas 1 and 2 of hymn #524) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Psalm 148 Gustav Holst Lord, who has made us for thine own, hear as we sing before thy throne. Alleluia. Accept thy children s rev rent praise for all thy wondrous works and ways. Alleluia. Waves, rolling in on ev ry shore, pause at his footfall and adore. Ye torrents rushing from the hills, bless him whose

hand your fountains fills. Earth, ever through the power divine, seedtime and harvest shall be thine. Sweet flowers that perfume all the air, thank him that he hath made you fair. Burn, lamps of night with constant flame; shine to the honor of his name. Thou sun, whom all the lands obey, renew his praise from day to day. Alleluia. *DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION DISSOLUTION OF PASTORAL CALL AND DEPARTING BLESSING *CLOSING HYMN #525 Here I Am, Lord schutte *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION BENEDICTION RESPONSE The Lord Bless You and Keep You John Rutter CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY Carillon Sortie Henri Mulet As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world! 10 PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE Nepal continues to struggle following the April 25 earthquake. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake was the most powerful earthquake to hit the region since the Bihar earthquake of 1934, and its impact has been devastating in terms of loss of life and destruction of infrastructure. The earthquake caused more than 7300 deaths, left more than 14,000 injured, and an estimated 2.8 million without shelter. Priority needs at this time are: shelter, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), psychosocial support, food, non-food items (NFI) and education. As one of the least developed countries, Nepal s capacity to respond to the massive humanitarian needs are limited, and the government of Nepal has appealed to the international community to assist. PDA Response Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is responding to immediate needs through ACT Alliance. One Great Hour of Sharing funds have been provided assist local ACT partners who were already present in Nepal prior to the earthquake, in the distribution of food, shelter and clean water in earthquake-impacted areas. [10] Needs assessments are ongoing. PDA is committed to the long-term response and is exploring further opportunities for action through other partners in the region, including mission partners in India and Indonesia who are offering assistance. How You Can Help The needs for the response will be great. God s people are once again called on to stand in the GAP Give. Act. Pray. Give: Financial support for relief efforts can be designated to DR with reference to Nepal. Gifts can be made online, by phone (800) , or by checks, which can be placed in the offering plate. Act: Learn how you can help families who have lost everything in the devastation. Stay informed; download resources; and share updates. Pray: Pray for those who suffered loss of family or those who are working tirelessly to provide rescue, humanitarian aid, and spiritual and psychological support.
