1 The ACTS of the Apostles SHARING OF RESOURCES T he Acts of the Apostles tells the story of the growth of the Jesus movement, both in Jerusalem and further afield in the Gentile world through the Spirit-filled ministry of the apostles. Luke creates a sense that people were welcoming the good news about Jesus at an extraordinary rate. In the aftermath of Peter s speech at Pentecost, Luke explains that those who welcomed Peter s message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added (Acts 2:41). A little later on, readers are told that the number of Christian converts had now risen to something like five thousand (Acts 4:4). Importantly, some distinctive features and practices quickly emerged within the Christian community based in Jerusalem, including prayer, attending the temple, sharing meals together, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and a dedication to the apostles teaching. A key feature of this expanding community that Luke highlights is the sharing of resources so that the basic needs of each believer are met. This is not surprising, given that a central facet of Jesus teaching in Luke s first volume centers on the care of the poor. At the earliest stages of the Gospel, Mary s Magnificat tells us that God has filled the hungry with good things (Lk 1:53). The Lukan Jesus preaching includes material that advocates the use of possessions on behalf of the poor, including, for example, the Parable of the Rich Fool ( ) and the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus ( ). This preaching material is not found in the other Gospels, and Luke s decision to include it highlights that the correct use of wealth to serve the needs of the poor is central to the Christian life. Returning to Acts, this aspect of Jesus preaching is embodied by the nascent Church. In Acts 2:45, Luke relays that the early Christians would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Acts 4:32-37 reiterates this vision of selling resources for the benefit of those in need, given that those who possessed property sold it and brought the proceeds to the apostles so that the money could be distributed to each as any had need. Luke specifically mentions Barnabas, a Levite from Cyprus, formally known as Joseph, who sold a field and laid the money at the apostles feet (Acts 4:36-37). Barnabas generosity, here, acts as a contrast to the couple Ananias and Sapphira, who meet a sudden death as a consequence of trying to hold back money for themselves from the sale of a property (see Acts 5:1-10). The story rather bizarrely mentions that both fell down and died once their deception had been unveiled by Peter, the likely purpose being to coax a reader to interpret their deaths in light of the parables of the Rich Fool (12:13-21) and the Rich Man and Lazarus ( ), both of which refer to the deaths of those who are slaves to money. The story of Ananias and Sapphira, and, indeed, the aforementioned parables, seek to persuade readers to use wealth and resources to assist those in need, similar to the more positive example of Barnabas. This focus on the sharing of resources in Acts is consistent with the practice of both Jesus (Luke 9:58) and the disciples (see Luke 5:11, 28; 18:28) in Luke s Gospel, as well as Jesus teaching on discipleship elsewhere in the Lukan narrative (Luke 12:32-34; 14:33; 18:22). For Luke, being part of the Christian community and, ultimately, the inheritance of eternal life require the bequeathing of one s material possessions to those in need. For some, specifically chosen by Jesus (see Luke 18:18-23), this is a radical demand and requires the giving over of everything. For others, like the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), it requires using some of our resources and money to assist the needy whom we encounter in our daily lives. n Soul Space - The Acts of the Apostles The Church s Beginnings is written by Diane Corkery - Designed by Gabriel Carbone. Belfast BT13 2 ES, who take old computers, wipe the data, refurbish them and set them up in schools in Africa as computer labs. Combined with accredited training courses and ongoing maintenance we have taught over half a million young people how to use a computer. This vital skill in today's world opens up unending opportunities for the young people whilst also building a better future for the country. To do this amazing work we need old computers. There is huge demand from Africa for Camara computers as we send them preloaded with software and train the teachers how to use them. From 11th November we will run our annual "One week, One Thousand Computers" campaign. Churches in Northern Ireland contributed over a quarter of this last year. This annual event tries to find 1,000 unused and unwanted pcs and laptops for reuse in deprived schools in Africa. Camara wipe and repair computers of all ages, shapes and sizes, load them with educational software and ship them to one of Camara s seven African Hubs where they are distributed to the most deprived schools. We are asking people to dig out their old computers that are gathering dust. Visit for details of where to drop your computers off between 9.30 and 4.30 any week day. For your information. It costs 100 per computer to process, ship and provide the relevant training and maintenance for a minimum of 21 children to learn how to use it over the next 3 years. Most schools require a 25 computer suite at a cost of 2,500. Whilst we are not asking for donations anyone who feels they would like to support Camara in this way may do so through or by sending a donation along with a computer to our base in 10, Townsend Enterprise Park. WERE YOU ABUSED WHEN YOU WERE IN AN INSTITUTION? TALK TO US - WE WILL LISTEN The Historic Institutional Abuse Inquiry is an independent Inquiry set up to investigate abuse of children in residential institutions (but not schools) in Northern Ireland between 1922 and Abuse could be sexual or physical abuse, or emotional abuse or neglect. The Inquiry has an Acknowledgment Forum where you can come and tell experienced professionals in private, and in confidence, about abuse you experienced. Another part of the inquiry will investigate abuse, and then make recommendations to the Northern Ireland government. You can choose to talk to both parts, or to either part, of the Inquiry. If you were abused in an institution, or saw others being abused, the Inquiry wants to talk to you. It hopes that as many people as possible who experienced abuse in institutions, or witnessed others being abused, will come forward to help the Inquiry investigate the way these children were treated, and what should be done about it. If you know someone who was abused encourage them to contact us. If you want to contact us you can get more information on our website If you live in the UK you can write to us at FREEPOST HIA Inquiry, or ring us at our FREEPHONE number If you live outside the UK you can write to us at HIA Inquiry, PO Box 2080, Belfast, BT1 9QA, WE TIDY GRAVES November is a month when we remember the dead. 10 LETTER FROM TROCAIRE Dear Fr Sheehan & Kilwee Parish Your personal support and compassion and that of your Parish and Diocese over the past year has helped to improve the lives of 2.4 million people. From families made homeless by war and natural disasters, to farmers battling the effects of climate change, your generosity has brought hope and dignity to people living in poverty. The following verses of prayer are taken from the recent papal encyclical Laudato Si, a prayer for the earth and is very appropriate for all the people we work with; the full prayer can be obtained from the document: Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognise that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Wishing you God s blessing for the great work you do and for your continued support of Trocaire. Yours sincerely Eamonn Meehan Executive Director
