Wednesday, November 2 nd at 6pm, please plan to join us and attend the beautiful Mass of Remembrance. It will be followed by a reception with light refreshments in the West Hall. The bereavement team cordially sends its invitation to those who have celebrated with Saint Peter Claver parish either a funeral or burial during the past year. We also invite all others who wish to pray for and remember those beloved relatives and friends that have been called home to the Lord. Together in fellowship we can once again remember our loss with others who are also grieving. Everyone is welcome, so we hope to see many of you there.

3 Page Three October 30, 2016 Dear Friends, May the love of God move our hearts to compassion, and may His wisdom guide our minds to follow His will. Our nation is at a crucial time of its history when we as citizens with the right to vote will have to make very serious decision who we choose to be our next President. I continue to present our U.S. Bishops recommendation to help form our consciences so that we can discern our choice better. Making Moral Choices The bishops do not tell Catholics how to vote; the responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience, aided by prudence. This exercise of conscience begins with always opposing policies that violate human life or weaken its protection. When morally flawed laws already exist, prudential judgment is needed to determine how to do what is possible to restore justice even if partially or gradually without ever abandoning a moral commitment to full protection for all human life from conception to natural death (see St. John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 73). Prudential judgment is also needed to determine the best way to promote the common good in areas such as housing, health care, and immigration. When church leaders make judgments about how to apply Catholic teaching to specific policies, this may not carry the same binding authority as universal moral principles but cannot be dismissed as one political opinion among others. These moral applications should inform the consciences and guide the actions of Catholics. As Catholics we are not singleissue voters. A candidate s position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a voter s support. Yet a candidate s position on a single issue that involves an intrinsic evil, such as support for legal abortion or the promotion of racism, may legitimately lead a voter to disqualify a candidate from receiving support. What Public Policies Should Concern Catholics Most? As Catholics, we are led to raise questions about political life other than those that concentrate on individual, material wellbeing. We focus more broadly on what protects or threatens the dignity of every human life. Catholic teaching challenges voters and candidates, citizens and elected officials, to consider the moral and ethical dimensions of public policy issues. In light of ethical principles, the U.S. Bishops offer the following policy goals that hopefully will guide Catholics as they form their consciences and reflect on the moral dimensions of their public choices: Address the preeminent requirement to protect human life - by restricting and bringing to an end the destruction of unborn children through abortion and providing women in crisis pregnancies with the support they need. End the following practices: the use of euthanasia and assisted suicide to deal with the burdens of illness and disability; the destruction of human embryos in the name of research; the use of the death penalty to combat crime; and the imprudent resort to war to address international disputes. Protect the fundamental understanding of marriage as the lifelong and faithful union of one man and one woman as the central institution of society; promote the complementarity of the sexes and reject false gender ideologies; provide better support for family life morally, socially, and economically, so that our nation helps parents raise their children with respect for life, sound moral values, and an ethic of stewardship and responsibility. Achieve comprehensive immigration reform that offers a path to citizenship, treats immigrant workers fairly, prevents the separation of families, maintains the integrity of our borders, respects the rule of law, and addresses the factors that compel people to leave their own countries. Help families and children overcome poverty and ensure access to and choice in education, as well as decent work at fair, living wages and adequate assistance for the vulnerable in our nation, while also helping to overcome widespread hunger and poverty around the world, especially in the policy areas of development assistance, debt relief, and international trade. Ensure full conscience protection and religious freedom for individuals and groups to meet social needs, and so enable families, community groups, economic structures, and government to work together to overcome poverty, pursue the common good, and care for creation. Provide health care while respecting human life, human dignity, and religious freedom in our health care system. Continue to oppose policies that reflect racism, hostility toward immigrants, religious bigotry, and other forms of unjust discrimination. Establish and comply with moral limits on the use of military force - examining for what purposes it may be used, under what authority, and at what human cost - with a special view to seeking a responsible and effective response for ending the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East and other parts of the world. Join with others around the world to pursue peace, protect human rights and religious liberty, and advance economic justice and care for creation. Bishops for providing our Catholic faithful a way to facilitate the selection of our next President to direct our country to be a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. I pray for the grace that God will enlighten our people to vote wisely. Peace, Fr. Riz

6 Page Six St. Peter Claver The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. ~ Psalm 145:14 Next week our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, Serving those who serve and its ministry to provide the same pastoral care and services to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations, as does any other Catholic diocese. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chaplains are paid for by the U.S. Government, the AMS receives no funding from government or the military for its programs and services, including the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program, which provides priests for home dioceses and for the military chaplaincy. To learn more about the AMS, go to Tuesday, November 1 st, is the Solemnity of All Saints and is a Holy Day of Obligation. 7 Page Seven St. Peter Claver The Day of the Dead, known in Spanish as Dia de los Muertos, is a two-day holiday honoring the spirits of the deceased. The celebra on coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day on November 1 st and All Souls' Day on November 2 nd. Tradi onally, this holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends in honor of those who have passed. Living rela ves visit graves and build private altars that resemble elaborate shrines and can be erected in the home or at the gravesites themselves. They surround the altars with signs of their devo on called ofrendas to honor the deceased using former possessions, sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods of the person they lost. The holiday originated in Mexico and also happened to use some of the most brilliant, beau ful, and crea ve designs to honor their loved ones. The Hispanic Community of our parish will erect an altar of Ofrendas or elaborate shrine in the ves bule of our church for the celebra on of The Day of Remembrance of all those who died whose funeral we did here in the parish since October of last year, on Wednesday, November 2 nd, at 6pm. We are taking pre-orders for our world famous homemade cinnamon rolls again this year! 1) The rolls must be ordered in 6-,12-,18-,or 24-piece batches. 2) Rolls must be paid for when ordered. 3) You will need to tell us what day of the Boutique (Saturday, 11/5 or Sunday, 11/6) and what time you would like to pick them up. THE PRE-ORDER PRICES ARE: 6 ROLLS = $16.00 ($2.67 ea) 12 ROLLS = $30.00 ($2.50 ea) 18 ROLLS = $45.00 ($2.50 ea) 24 ROLLS = $55.00 ($2.30 ea) Cinnamon rolls purchased at the Boutique Bake Table are $3.00 ea. The St. Peter Claver Children s Christmas Eve Mass Choir has been expanded! Our choir will now include 1 st 12 th grade - in an effort to increase the number of students who can participate including those who have wanted to be in the choir but became too old for it. We will begin our rehearsals on Thursday, November 3 rd from 6-7pm in the church. PLEASE JOIN US in making this another great year for the Children/Youth Combined Christmas Choir! ~Gregg and Teddi Cassity, co-directors This weekend, and every 5 th Sunday of the month, you will find offering envelopes by the church doors for our St. Vincent de Paul Conference here at St. Peter Claver. By walking through the Holy Door of Mercy during this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, we can gain a Plenary Indulgence for ourselves or for a deceased loved one. This is a wonderful opportunity; the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy concludes on November 20 th, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, with the Jubilee being brought to a close in local churches on November 13 th, the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary time. We will meet here at St. Peter Claver and carpool to Our Lady of Lourdes in Northridge. See next week s bulletin for final details. As you all know, we have a very tough election decision which, by the grace of God, should now become easier. Our Pastor, Fr. Riz, has blessed us with a day of Eucharistic Adoration and prayer on election day, Tuesday, November 8th, from the opening to the closing of the polls (7am to 8pm). We will have a sign-up sheet in the entrance of the church starting on Saturday, November 5th, at the 5pm Mass; however it is not required that you sign up to attend. The primary intentions are: for God's will to be done in the choice of the presidential candidate; for an end to the holocaust of abortion; for the continuation of our religious freedoms, especially for the Catholic faith which is under attack; and for God's blessings to return to this country that we love. Please pray that The Holy Spirit guide and our Blessed Mother intercede on behalf of this effort, for the Glory of our Triune God.

A predator will use fear to manipulate his or her victims, making it hard to end the abuse. Often, abuse victims are too scared or embarrassed to speak up, especially if the abuser is someone they know. Abusers can use close relationships to inspire fear of retaliation and may also stress that no one will believe their victim.
