Yesterday you re bagging groceries at the supermarket. Today you re crowned the leader of your community, perhaps your country. Now what? What are you going to do with all that power and authority? Some of us might get right to work, implementing a ten-part plan that s been simmering on the back burner of our consciousness all our lives. These are natural leaders among us who critically view all circumstances routinely with a better idea in mind. Others, who ve never given leadership a thought, would have to take some time for contemplation, to absorb what just happened and how best to proceed. Still others may gather advisors and allies, trying to stack the deck with those who are smarter, better informed, or with a clearer moral vision. And a few of us might simply plan our escape from such unsought responsibility! Being the sovereign force on the throne of power is a mixed blessing. King David would find that out. All leaders do. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. One reason Paul s letters don t make for easy reading is that he s not telling stories, like many books of the Bible do. Since Paul was trained as a scholar of Hebrew law, he s more of a theological thinker. Also, he s in the process of putting together a new assembly of God we know as the Church, whether he realized it at the time or not. Paul is also an absentee pastor, solving problems and answering questions these new assemblies are asking as they seek to live this new way of life. Finally, Paul has already brought the stories about Jesus to the communities in person, so he wasn t going to spill more ink telling those again. In this passage, he s exploring the meaning of Christ before there was a Jesus, so to speak. Where or what was the Son of God before Jesus arrived in history? He didn t pop out of nowhere, Paul asserts. Jesus is the image, the pattern, the foundation, the force, the beginning, the wisdom, the reconciliation, and the fulfillment. We imagine the Colossians may have had to read this letter more than once. This is the King of the Jews. Many people at the time of Jesus wanted a new king. The actual king of the Jews, Herod, was extremely disliked and also ignored. The Romans, after all, were really in charge and Herod was merely a puppet of their authority. Beyond Herod, beyond the Romans, there had to be a ruler who would be greater, better, or at least easier to bear. Some who followed Jesus hoped He might be the one. Jesus never sought the title of king. But people kept trying to give it to Him, up to the moment of His death. Pilate even nailed it to the cross Jesus died on: Jesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm ( Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews ). According to John s gospel, Pilate wrote it in three languages - Greek, Hebrew, and Latin - so all would understand. But even Pilate didn t understand. While Jesus never embraced the identity or crown of a king, He did earnestly proclaim a kingdom. Jesus wasn t eager to assume control. He preferred to take all the power in the universe and lay it down for the world s sake.
3 Page Three November 20, 2016 Happy Thanksgiving, dearest parishioners! Ingratitude is not the opposite of thankfulness, but forgetfulness. Thanksgiving Day is everyday; for everyday, we, both good and the not-so-good receive many good things from God s mercy. Misfortunes, remember, are never from God, but consequences of wrong choices, sins, our pride, our decision to separate ourselves from God! Remember the first Thanksgiving? Many people trace the origins of the modern Thanksgiving to the harvest celebration that the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in However, their first true thanksgiving was in 1623, when they gave thanks The First Thanksgiving 1621 by Jean L.G. Ferris ( ) for rain that ended a drought. The early Thanksgiving took the form of a special church service, rather than a feast. Yes, brothers and sisters, Thanksgiving Day is not what to buy, cook and eat but our profound gratitude to God who alone can save us from all drought and suffering! And why turkey on this day? Well, pigs, chickens and cows owe Mister or Miss turkey a lot this day! Turkey was introduced to the early Pilgrim settlers by the Native American Wampanoag tribe after the Pilgrims arrived in The first year for the settlers was bleak, many were dying from the journey. Their seeds, aside from barley, did not produce any harvest. But, the Indians assisted the Pilgrims, introducing them to native foods such as corn and squash and showed them how to hunt and fish. And thus, the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 at the behest of Governor William Bradford. And the Native Americans were invited as guests of honor. In 1863, during the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln instituted the holiday. He wanted all Americans to celebrate the holiday as a sign of unity and thanksgiving to God. Brothers and sisters, we are here not just because of the turkey and the parties! We are here above all to remember that unity and thanksgiving brought survival and salvation to America: one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Two things to remember from our history of Thanksgiving: 1. Thanksgiving Day is for us to remember and celebrate that God alone can save us from drought or from any other form of disaster. God has saved us and that is why we give thanks. 2. The pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians united that first Thanksgiving and and dined together. In the midst of today s confusion and great insistence on equality and rights, do we still believe in the gift and power of community, harmony, reconciliation and collaboration? And what touches the heart of God? 1. SUPPLICATION. This is our most favorite way of connecting with God. Lord, I want this; I want that. Give it to me now or else! The more we ask and ask, the more we become needy. The more we become needy, the tendency is to complain. Supplication, asking, is not bad but -- it is not the only prayer God wants to hear. 2. THANKSGIVING! In the parable of the Ten Lepers, how many returned to give thanks? Only one! And not only that, an unexpected individual, a foreigner, an outsider gave thanks to Jesus. And the Lord declared his thanksgiving as an act of faith! Every day of our lives we live because of God s mercy. We live because we trust Him! The more we trust, the more we experience God s mercy whose blessings are always given to us: our existence, our family, our jobs, even our trials. Every good gift comes from God! Gratitude is to remember the kindness and mercy of the Giver and in remembering Him, we realize that we are blessed because of what He has done for us. And this is precisely what we remember in every Eucharist (from Greek which means thanksgiving ) that Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again for you and me! But the question is: Like the Samaritan, do we remember to return to God glory and praise? When we remember the Giver, abundance flows, we grow all the more in grace. God does not become less when we forget to give Him thanks, we do! Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love is everlasting! (Ps 107:1)

For more information visit or call (805) Most people look to the end of the calendar year to begin making resolutions for the next year. There seems to be this magical break in human time because of the changing of a year. Suddenly, the world is filled with new possibilities and promises of a fruitful future. However, an everyday steward does not need to wait for the first of January to make some resolutions or changes in life. This Sunday marks the end of another liturgical year. Next Sunday, we begin looking toward Christmas with the First Sunday of Advent. Today is a great day to make some decisions and turn attention to improving our spiritual life. Starting in Advent you could make a resolution to spend more time with the Scriptures. God is trying to tell you something, but you have to be more mindful to really listen. You could challenge yourself to each day do something generous that you might not normally do. The challenges don't have to be large or cost a lot, but they should push you a little out of your comfort zone. That's why we call them challenges. You could also resolve to keep a gratefulness journal, where you record daily your thanks for wonderful things in your life. This will help you examine your life more closely and will help you realize the wealth that God has given you, even in the small things. Don't wait to strengthen your discipleship and stewardship way of life. The Church is beginning anew and that means you are too! You are the Church, right? Don't wait another month. Organize your life with the rhythm of the liturgical year, not the year defined by a party in Times Square. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Choosing love is choosing life! Choosing love means standing with those in need, defending the helpless, and proclaiming the beauty of every human life. Choosing love takes time. Choosing love gives of yourself. When we choose love, together we build a culture of life. We invite you to join us at our 3 rd annual OneLife LA on January 21 st, 2017 as we challenge LA to choose love! We invite you to join thousands in declaring a commitment to valuing and protecting all human life, particularly the most vulnerable in our community. The event will begin with a walk up Temple Street, across Grand Avenue and down 1 st Street, culminating in a family-friendly picnic with music, entertainment, food trucks, and exhibits from community organizations. For more information, visit onelifela.org.
No esperes otro mes! Organiza tu vida con el ritmo del año litúrgico y no con el año definido por una fiesta en Times Square. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS St. Rose of Lima s Adoration Chapel, the exposition of Jesus is 24 hours a day, 130 continuous hours per week, from 9am Monday through 5pm Saturday.
