2 Pastor s Corner Dear Parishioners, Thanks to all of you who celebrated with us this past Thanksgiving. We appreciate all of you who were able to bring bags of nonperishable food items for the less fortunate. The outpouring of generosity is tremendous! We are proud of our Holy Family!! Next Sunday, December 3rd, we begin the Advent season with the First Sunday of Advent. At that time, we begin a new liturgical year in the life of the church. It is a year of grace, and we will switch to the Sunday readings Cycle B and Daily Mass Cycle II. Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). Advent devotions including the Advent wreath remind us of the meaning of the season. We have a number of different Christmas charitable outreaches. Information is in the bulletin on the St. Vincent de Paul Adopt a Family program, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, envelopes for our sister parish in Haiti and the Holy Family Toy Drive. All of these are very important and we appreciate your being a part of these opportunities to help the less fortunate. Thank you in advance!! We will have the annual Triduo of prayers preceding the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration at 6:30 AM (in Spanish) on Tuesday, December 12 th. These three nights are in Spanish and take place Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Dec 9-11 at 7 PM in the church. Christmas is coming up in a month. This year will be unusual as Christmas lands on a Monday. So what does that mean in terms of Sunday worship vis a vis Christmas eve, etc.? Well, we are expected to attend both a Sunday Mass and a Christmas Mass. The Sunday Masses will be the vigil on Saturday, the 23 rd at 5:30 PM as well as the morning Masses of 5 AM, 6:30 AM, 8 AM, 9:30 AM, 11 AM and 12:30 PM in Spanish. Those Masses will fulfill the Sunday obligation. Then, beginning with the 4 PM family Mass on Sunday, December 24 th, we begin our Christmas celebrations. Those liturgies will be a 4 PM on Christmas Eve (Sunday, December 24 th ), Midnight and 8 AM, 9:30 AM, 11 AM and 12:30 PM on Christmas Day, December 25 th. Technically speaking can we go at 4 PM and do double duty and cover both the Sunday and Christmas Masses. Sorry no! With gratitude to all of you - Fr. 3 Things To Consider for Advent BELL RINGERS NEEDED FOR SALVATION ARMY Every year local churches volunteer to do bell ringing and collect money for the poor in the community. The job is easy. Just ring a little bell, collect donations in the famous red kettle and wish people a Merry Christmas. Holy Family is volunteering for Saturday, December 16 and Monday, December 18 from 10am to 6pm at the Von s on Glendale Avenue. All money collected in Glendale stays in Glendale to help the needy with services and food. Please consider to do an hour of service for the poor. This is what our Catholic mission is! HOLY FAMILY TOY DRIVE Collection dates are: December 2 and 3 December 9 and 10 The Justice and Peace Committee is organizing our annual Toy Drive for underprivileged children whose parents are incarcerated. These children who have parents in jail are often neglected or forgotten. Please consider bringing a new unwrapped toy next week when you come to Mass. Please consider gifts for teenage boys as well as other ages for boys or girls. There will be boxes at the church entrances to collect your donations. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL 'Adopt-a-Family' this Christmas It s been a very blessed year once again for our Society. We are truly thankful to the Lord, to our pastor and priests, most especially to those who contributed to the Poor box, whose donations were used to assist numerous families in need in our parish. This Christmas season, how about going a step further and think of 'Adopting a family'? There are many ways of extending our generosity to each of the needy families. If you would like to donate one of the large wreaths around the church walls to honor a loved one, please go to the office to make arrangements. The wreaths around the Stations of the Cross are $100 and the one on the Choir Loft is $200. Your dedication name will be placed on the wreath. If you would like to donate one of the poinsettias in the sanctuary during Christmas, please use one of the Christmas Flower envelopes. Write the name of who you would like to be remembered and include the suggested donation of $10 or more. The names will be in a beautiful gold frame that will be placed near the Infant Jesus in the Nativity scene during Christmas. MOLE SAINT NICHOLAS PARISH, HAITI As many of you are aware, Holy Family has a sister parish in Haiti that we support. Advent is a period of hope, a time of our spiritual preparation for Christmas. At Christmas, we celebrate the birthday of Jesus, our Lord and Prince of Peace. Like Lent, Advent is a time of more prayers, fasting, and charity. Purple is the liturgical color. Simbang Gabi and Las Posadas are examples of Advent traditions for Filipinos and Mexicans respectively. One of the best symbols of Advent is the Advent Wreath which is made of four (4) candles arranged in a circle of evergreens. On each Sunday of Advent, we light the candles at Mass. The purple candles are lit during the first, second, and fourth Sundays. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday which marks the pivotal period close to Christmas. In unity with the church and promote a meaningful celebration for families, everyone is encouraged to have an Advent Wreath in their homes. The Advent Wreath should be part of your home like the Christmas tree and Nativity scene. Boxes of Advent Candles are available in the parish office and church patio after Masses. 4

6 Holy Family Grade School More Parish News The Baptism Ministry is looking for a few good men and women We are looking for volunteers who are willing to serve God and His church by devoting a few hours every month. You can help during Baptism class every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 9:30 am to 12 noon with setup, registration, making certificates, and pack up. If you are able, you may even teach the class eventually. You may also help during the pre-baptismal interviews which are held on some weeknights, usually Tuesdays or Thursdays, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
