Welcome We welcome you and hope you are blessed as we magnify and worship God today. Please sign the pew register so we can know of your visit and have an opportunity to get to know you. If today is your first time visiting our church, consider picking up a visitor brochure and gift in the the back of the sanctuary. If you have questions about a sermon or anything related to the Bible or Christianity, consider joining our pastor in the Library (room across the hallway from the piano side entrance to the Sanctuary) during the Sunday School hour. You are welcome to join us any Sunday.

PRELUDE Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven WORSHIP SERVICE JANUARY 14, 2018 Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Praise him; praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress. Praise him still the same forever, slow to chide, and swift to bless. Praise him; praise the everlasting King. Fatherlike he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows. In his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Praise him; praise the everlasting King. Angels help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face. Sun and moon bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Praise him; praise the everlasting King. Words by Henry Lyte. Music by Christopher Miner. CALL TO WORSHIP From Psalm 68 (Leader) Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds and rejoice before him. (Congregation) His name is the LORD. A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing. Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death. Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies. You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. (All) Praise be to God! Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen. INVOCATION 1

THE WELCOME OF GOD SONGS OF PRAISE Good Good Father Oh, I ve heard a thousand stories of what they think you re like, But I ve heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night. And you tell me that you re pleased and that I m never alone. You re a good, good Father. It s who you are, it s who you are, It s who you are, and I m loved by you. It s who I am, it s who I am, it s who I am. Oh, I ve seen many searching for answers far and wide, But I know we re all searching for answers only you provide Cause you know just what we need before we say a word. You re a good, good Father. It s who you are, it s who you are, It s who you are, and I m loved by you. It s who I am, it s who I am, it s who I am. (Bridge) You are perfect in all of your ways. You are perfect in all of your ways You are perfect in all of your ways to us. (Repeat Bridge) Love so undeniable I can hardly speak; Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think As you call me deeper still, as you call me deeper still, As you call me deeper still into love, love, love. You re a good, good Father. It s who you are, it s who you are, It s who you are, and I m loved by you. It s who I am, it s who I am, it s who I am. (Repeat 2 X s) You re a good, good Father; a good, good Father. You re a good, good Father; a good, good Father. Words and Music by Anthony Brown and Pat Barrett. 2

Great Are You, Lord You give life. You are love. You bring light to the darkness. You give hope. You restore ev ry heart that is broken. And great are you, Lord. It s your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise. It s your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise to you only. (Repeat) (Bridge) And all the earth will shout your praise. Our hearts will cry these bones will sing, Great are you, Lord! (Repeat Bridge 2 X s) (Ending) It s your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise, we pour out our praise. It s your breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise to you only. (Repeat Ending) Great are you, Lord! Words and Music by David Leonard, Jason Ingram, and Leslie Jordan. Show Us Christ Prepare our hearts, O God, help us to receive. Break the hard and stony ground, help our unbelief. Plant your Word down deep in us, cause it to bear fruit, Open up our ears to hear, lead us in your truth. (Chorus) Show us Christ. Show us Christ. O God, reveal your glory through the preaching of your Word Until every heart confesses Christ is Lord. Your Word is living light upon our darkened eyes, Guards us through temptations, makes the simple wise. Your Word is food for famished ones, freedom for the slave, Riches for the needy soul, come speak to us today. (Chorus, then go to Bridge) (Bridge) Where else can we go, Lord? Where else can we go? You have the words of eternal life. (Repeat 3 X s) Show us Christ. Show us Christ. O God, reveal your glory through the preaching of your Word Until every heart confesses Christ is Lord. Words and music by Bob Kauflin and Doug Plank. 3

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God and Father, Yours is surpassing greatness, unspeakable goodness, super-abundant grace; We can as easily count the sands of the ocean as number your favors towards us; We know only a part, but that part exceeds all praise. We thank you for personal mercies, a measure of health, preservation of body, comforts of house and home, sufficiency of food and clothing, our families, their mutual help and support, your church, your Word, the faith you have put within us. But how we mourn our sin, ingratitude, vileness, the days that add to our guilt, the scenes that witness our offending tongues. We do not deny them, but rather confess, Father, we have sinned. Yet still we live, and fly repenting to your outstretched arms; you will not cast us off, for Jesus brings us near, you will not condemn, for Jesus died in our stead, you will not mark our mountains of sin, for Jesus leveled all, and his beauty covers all our deformities. O God, we bid farewell to sin by clinging to his cross, hiding in his wounds, and sheltering in his side. It is in Jesus name we pray. Amen. Adapted from Valley of Vision: Divine Mercies. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON Adapted from Isaiah 53 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has laid on his Son, Jesus Christ, the iniquity of us all. Jesus had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter. But Jesus bore our sins and made intercession for us. He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 4

HYMN OF RESPONSE #246 Man Of Sorrows! What A Name WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Members and Visitors please register your attendance on the Attendance Register. RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS (11:00 AM Service) (Blake Harris, Abigail Sterns) PASTORAL PRAYER CHORAL RESPONSE (11:00 AM Service) As pants the hart for cooling streams when heated in the chase, so longs my soul for thee, O God, and thy refreshing grace. For Thee, O God, the living God, my thirsty soul doth pine; O when shall I behold thy face, thou majesty divine. Why restless, why cast down, my soul? Trust God; and he ll employ his aid for thee, and change these sigh to thankful hymns of joy. Why restless, why cast down, my soul? Hope still; and thou shalt sing the praise of him who is thy God, thy health s eternal Spring. Words by Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady. Music by K. Lee Scott. Children age 4-1 st grade may be dismissed to Worship Center at this time. SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 9:18-26 (Pew Bible, page 814) 18 While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live. 19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. 20 And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, If I only touch his garment, I will be made well. 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well. And instantly the woman was made well. 23 And when Jesus came to the ruler s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went through all that district. 5

SERMON Leaning In Rev. Brad Allison Matthew manages to put two miracles within one story. One miracle is about a powerful man, a synagogue ruler, who encounters a desperate need. His daughter has died. While on his way to help this man, Jesus encounters a person with no power, a woman who has been rendered ritually unclean as a result of years of hemorrhaging. She too is desperate. Jesus heals her and then resumes his journey to the dead daughter, raising her from the dead. These two individuals on opposite ends of the social spectrum are united by their desperate need and their leaning upon Jesus. That image of leaning in is an appropriate one for this passage. We lean in when we want to draw closer, as we do, for example, when someone has a soft voice but we want to hear what they are saying. I notice three leaning ins in this story. I. Leaning in to Desperation II. Leaning in to Jesus III. Leaning in to Life 6

GIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus) Weak and wounded sinner, lost and left to die, O, raise your head for Love is passing by, Come to Jesus, come to Jesus, come to Jesus and live. Now your burden s lifted, and carried far away, and precious blood has washed away the stain; so sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus and live. And like a newborn baby, don t be afraid to crawl, and remember when you walk sometimes we fall; so fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus and live. Sometimes the way is lonely, and steep and filled with pain, so if your sky is dark and pours the rain then cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus and live. O, and when the love spills over, and music fills the night, and when you can t contain your joy inside then dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus and live. And with your final heartbeat, kiss the world goodbye, then go in peace, and laugh on Glory s side and fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus and live; fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus and live. Words and Music by Chris Rice. HYMN OF RESPONSE #616 Leaning on the Everlasting Arms BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Excerpts from AVPC Worship: Questions You ve Wanted to Ask Q. What is the difference in a hymn, a praise song, a chorus, and an anthem? A. There are many different ways to define these terms and there is a lot of overlap in them, but in general, at AVPC we use the terms in the following ways: Hymns are those worship songs, ancient or modern, that are metrical poems with multiple stanzas, often without a refrain (chorus). The Trinity Hymnal in the pew is a book of hymns, but often times we will print the hymn lyrics in our bulletin. Praise songs (or gospel songs) usually have multiple stanzas plus a memorable refrain. Modern praise songs tend to be more syncopated and melody-driven. Choruses are mini-poems consisting of a refrain, but usually without stanzas or with only one stanza. Anthems generally refer to the pieces written for and sung by the choir. But you will find that all of these terms are often interchangeable. For more questions and answers like this, we encourage you to pick up a free copy of our booklet, AVPC Worship: Questions You ve Wanted to Ask located in the Parlor and Welcome Center.
