Welcome We welcome you and hope you are blessed as we magnify and worship God today. Please sign the pew register so we can know of your visit and have an opportunity to get to know you. If today is your first time visiting our church, consider picking up a visitor brochure and gift in the the back of the sanctuary. If you have questions about a sermon or anything related to the Bible or Christianity, consider joining our pastor in the Library (room across the hallway from the piano side entrance to the Sanctuary) during the Sunday School hour.

Prelude Come Ye Sinners / I Will Arise and Go to Jesus worship service July 9, 2017 Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready, stands to save you, full of pity, love and pow r. (Chorus) I will arise and go to Jesus; He will embrace me in His arms. In the arms of my dear Savior, O, there are ten thousand charms. Come, ye thirsty, come and welcome God s free bounty, glorify. True belief and true repentance, ev ry grace that brings you nigh. (Chorus) Come, ye weary, heavy laden, lost and ruined by the fall. If you tarry till you re better, you will never come at all. (Chorus) Call to Worship Psalm 118:14-18, 21-23, 29 (Leader) The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: The right hand of the Lord does valiantly, the right hand of the Lord exalts, the right hand of the Lord does valiantly! (Congregation) We shall not die, but we shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death. We thank you, O Lord, that you have answered us and have become our salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. (All) Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Invocation THE WELCOME OF GOD 1

SONGS of praise Our God Water you turned into wine, opened the eyes of the blind. There s no one like you; none like you. Into the darkness you shine, out of the ashes we rise. There s no one like you, none like you. Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God, you are higher than any other. Our God is healer, awesome in power our God, our God. Into the darkness you shine, out of the ashes we rise. There s no one like you, none like you. Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God, you are higher than any other. Our God is healer, awesome in power our God, our God. And if our God is for us then who could ever stop us. And if our God is with us then what could stand against. And if our God is for us then who could ever stop us. And if our God is with us then what could stand against. Then what could stand against. Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God, you are higher than any other. Our God is healer, awesome in power our God, our God. Words and Music by Matt Redman, Jonas Myrin, Chris Tomlin, and Jesse Reeves. Mighty to Save Everyone needs compassion, a love that s never failing. Let mercy fall on me. Everyone needs forgiveness, the kindness of a savior, The hope of nations. (Hope of nations) 2

(Chorus 1) Savior, he can move the mountains. My God is mighty to save, he is mighty to save. Forever author of salvation; he rose and conquered the grave, Jesus conquered the grave. (2nd X to Bridge) So take me as you find me, all my fears and failures. Fill my life again. I give my life to follow. Everything I believe in, Now I surrender. (I surrender) (Chorus 1) (Bridge) Shine your light and let the whole world see; We re singing for the glory of the risen King Jesus. Shine your light and let the whole world see; We re singing for the glory of the risen King. (Chorus 2) Savior, you can move the mountains. God, you are mighty to save, You are mighty to save. Forever author of salvation; you rose and conquered the grave, Yes, you conquered the grave. (Repeat Chorus 2) Words and Music by Ben Fielding and Rueben Morgan. My Jesus Has Done All Things Well O for a heart prepared to sing to God, my Savior and my King; While with his saints I join to tell, My Jesus has done all things well. How sovereign, wonderful, and free is all his love to sinful me! He plucked me as a brand from hell; my Jesus has done all things well. And since my soul has known his love, what mercies has he made me prove; Mercies which all my praise excel; my Jesus has done all things well. And when to that bright world I rise, and join the anthems in the skies, Among the rest this note shall swell, my Jesus has done all things well. Words by Samuel Medley. Music by Jeff Koontz. 3

corporate Prayer of Confession O Righteous, Holy, and Sovereign God, fix us firm in our faith, for we are prone to wander; our decisions are smoke and vapor, and we do not glorify you, or behave according to your will. Save us from ourselves, from the deceits of sin, from the treachery of our old nature, from denying your just charge against our offences, from a life of continual rebellion against you, from wrong principles, views, and ends; for we know that apart from Christ, all our thoughts, affections, desires, and pursuits are alienated from you. We have acted as if we hated you, although you are love itself. We have sinned in word and in thought. O Father and King, cast us not into destruction, drive us not from your presence, but wound our hearts that they may be healed; break our hearts with your own hand, so that they may be made whole. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Adapted from The Valley of Vision: The Cry of a Convicted Sinner. Silent Confession How Can it Be (11:00 a.m. service) I am guilty, ashamed of what I ve done, what I ve become. These hands are dirty, I dare not lift them up to the Holy One. You plead my cause, you right my wrongs, you break my chains, you overcome, you gave your life to give me mine. You say that I am free. How can it be? I ve been hiding, afraid I ve let you down. Inside I doubt that you could love me, but in your eyes there s only grace now. Though I fall, you can make me new; from this death I will rise with you. Oh, the grace reaching out for me! How can it be? Words and Music by Jason Ingram, Jeff Johnson, & Paul Mabury. Assurance of Pardon Titus 3:4-7 When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 4

Hymn of Response #499 Rock of Ages Welcome and Announcements Members and Visitors please register your attendance on the Attendance Register. reception of new members 8:30 a.m. service - Henry and Katie Jackson; Blake and Anna Stevens 11:00 a.m. service Alan and Suzanne Blankley pastoral prayer Children ages 4 - K5 may be dismissed to Worship Center at this time. Scripture Reading Luke 20:9-18 (Pew Bible, page 879) 9 And he began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty- handed. 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty- handed. 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him. 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours. 15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others. When they heard this, they said, Surely not! 17 But he looked directly at them and said, What then is this that is written: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone? 18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. 5

Sermon The Mercy of God s Judgment Dr. Frank Thielman 6

Giving of Tithes and Offerings By Thy Mercy Jesus, Lord of life and glory, bend from heaven thy gracious ear; while our waiting souls adore thee, friend of helpless sinners, hear. From the depth of nature s blindness, from the hardening power of sin, from all malice and unkindness, from the pride that lurks within, by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. When temptation sorely presses in the day of Satan s power, in our times of deep distresses, in each dark and trying hour; when the world around is smiling in the time of wealth and ease, earthly joys our hearts beguiling, in the day of health and peace, by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. In the weary hours of sickness, in the times of grief and pain, when we feel our mortal weakness, when all human help is vain; in the solemn hour of dying, in the awful judgment day, may our souls, on thee relying, find thee still our Rock and Stay. By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. Words by James J. Cummins. Music by Greg Thompson. Hymn of Response #486 God, Be Merciful to Me benediction Postlude Excerpts from AVPC Worship: Questions You ve Wanted to Ask Q. What is a benediction? A. A pronouncement of God s blessing upon all believers. Q. What should the congregation be doing during the benediction? A. There is no set rule. Some people like to close their eyes. Others like to look at the pastor giving the benediction and hold out their hands, palms up, as a physical expression of faith that they are receiving that blessing from God. For more questions and answers like this, we encourage you to pick up a free copy of our booklet, AVPC Worship: Questions You ve Wanted to Ask located in the Parlor and Welcome Center.
