Welcome We welcome you and hope you are blessed as we magnify and worship God today. Please sign the pew register so we can know of your visit and have an opportunity to get to know you. If today is your first time visiting our church, consider picking up a visitor brochure and gift in the the back of the Sanctuary. If you have questions about a sermon or anything related to the Bible or Christianity, consider joining our pastor in the Library (room across the hallway from the piano side entrance to the Sanctuary) during the Sunday School hour. You are welcome to join us any Sunday. The Library is also available during both Worship services for nursing mothers. And for parents with small children who are unable to use our nursery or sit in the Sanctuary, please take advantage of our Sermon Listening Room, located across the hallway from the organ side entrance to the Sanctuary.
WORSHIP SERVICE JULY 29, 2018 PRELUDE By Thy Mercy Jesus, Lord of life and glory, bend from heaven thy gracious ear; while our waiting souls adore thee, friend of helpless sinners, hear. From the depth of nature s blindness, from the hardening power of sin, from all malice and unkindness, from the pride that lurks within, by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. When temptation sorely presses in the day of Satan s power, in our times of deep distresses, in each dark and trying hour; when the world around is smiling in the time of wealth and ease, earthly joys our hearts beguiling, in the day of health and peace, by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. In the weary hours of sickness, in the times of grief and pain, when we feel our mortal weakness, when all human help is vain; in the solemn hour of dying, in the awful judgment day, may our souls, on thee relying, find thee still our Rock and Stay. By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. Words by James J. Cummins. Music by Greg Thompson. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 145:3, 8-9, Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; and his mercy is over all that he has made. The LORD is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. INVOCATION THE WELCOME OF GOD 1
SONGS OF PRAISE Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity, joined with power. He is able, he is able; he is willing; doubt no more. Come ye needy, come, and welcome, God s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall; If you tarry til you re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, this he gives you, tis the Spirit s rising beam. Arise, O God, and Shine Arise, O God, and shine in all thy saving might, And prosper each design to spread thy glorious light; Let healing streams of mercy flow That all the earth thy truth may know. Bring distant nations near to sing thy glorious praise; Let every people hear and learn thy holy ways. Reign, mighty God, assert thy cause, And govern by thy righteous laws. Put forth thy glorious pow r, that everyone may see And earth present her store, in converts born to thee. God, our own God, his Church will bless, And fill the world with righteousness. 2
To God, the only Wise, the one immortal King, Let hallelujahs rise, from every living thing; Let all that breathe, on every coast, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Words and William Hurn. Music by Chris Miner. All I Have is Christ (11:00 AM Service) Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. I once was lost in darkest night yet thought I knew the way. The sin that promised joy and life had led me to the grave. I had no hope that you would own a rebel to your will, And if you had not loved me first, I would refuse you still. But as I ran my hell-bound race, indifferent to the cost, You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross. And I beheld God s love displayed, you suffered in my place. You bore the wrath reserved for me now all I know is grace. Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. Now Lord, I would be yours alone and live so all might see The strength to follow your commands could never come from me. O Father, use my ransomed life in any way you choose; O Father, use my ransomed life in any way you choose And let my song forever be: my only boast is you. Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. Hallelujah! All I have is Christ. Hallelujah! Jesus is my life. Words and Music by Jordan Kauflin. 3
CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION O God of Unsearchable Greatness, Without you, we are nothing but vanity, iniquity, perishing; Sin has forfeited your favor, marred your image in us, banished us from your presence, exposed us to the curse of your law, and we cannot deliver ourselves from this sin. But a resource is found in you, for without any deserving or desire from us, you devised an everlasting plan through your Son, Jesus Christ. May we find Jesus as the power unto salvation, the center of all relief, the source of all gospel blessings. May his shed blood make us more thankful for your mercies, more humble under your correction, more zealous in your service, more watchful against temptation, more contented in our circumstances, and more loving and helping to others. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Adapted from Valley of Vision: Deliverance SILENT CONFESSION GOD S DELIVERANCE TO HIS PEOPLE From Psalm 91 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Let us say of the LORD, He is our refuge and our fortress, my God, in whom we trust. Surely he will save you from the fowler s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. If you say, The LORD is my refuge, and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. The Lord declares, Because you love me, I will rescue you; I will protect you, for you acknowledge my name. When you call on me, I will answer you. I will be with you in trouble. I will deliver you, and I will show you my salvation. Brothers and sisters in Christ, this salvation is given to us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. 4
HYMN OF RESPONSE #598 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Members and Visitors please register your attendance on the Attendance Register. PASTORAL PRAYER Children age 4-1 st grade may be dismissed to Worship Center at this time. SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 70 (Pew Bible, page 484) 1 Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me! 2 Let them be put to shame and confusion who seek my life! Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! 3 Let them turn back because of their shame who say, Aha, Aha! 4 May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, God is great! 5 But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay! 5
SERMON Help Me, Lord! Rev. Brad Allison The theme of this psalm is made clear by a literary device known as bracketing or inclusio. As the word bracketing suggests, it means to bookend material through the repetition of a theme at the beginning and end. So the theme of Psalm 70, stated at its beginning and end, is the urgent call to God for help. This is the essence of prayer and the key to praying without ceasing, a practice commanded by God in the New Testament. We are to call out to God for help throughout our day. Those who don t do so are warned in this psalm of their great danger, and those who do are promised joy and gladness. I. The Call for Help v. 1, 5 II. Those Who Don t Call for Help v. 2-3 III. Those Who Do Call for Help v. 4 6
GIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER (Gluten-free bread is available in the Welcome Center. As the elements are passed, feel free to state the following words to the person next to you in the pew: Bread This is Christ s body, given for you. Juice This is Christ s blood, shed for the forgiveness of your sins. ) Be Magnified I have made you too small in my eyes, O Lord, forgive me. And I have believed in a lie, that you were unable to help me. But now, O Lord, I see my wrong - heal my heart and show yourself strong. And in my eyes and with my song, O Lord, be magnified. O Lord, be magnified. Be magnified, O Lord, you are highly exalted. And there is nothing you can t do, O Lord, my eyes are on you. Be magnified. O Lord, be magnified. I have leaned on the wisdom of men, O Lord, forgive me. And I have responded to them instead of your light and your mercy. But now, O Lord, I see my wrong. Heal my heart and show yourself strong and in my eyes and with my song, O Lord, be magnified. O Lord, be magnified. Words and Music by Lynn DeShazo. HYMN OF RESPONSE #402 Abide With Me BENEDICTION Excerpts from AVPC Worship: Questions You ve Wanted to Ask Q. What is a benediction? A. A pronouncement of God s blessing upon all believers. Q. What should the congregation be doing during the benediction? A. There is no set rule. Some people like to close their eyes. Others like to look at the pastor giving the benediction and hold out their hands, palms up, as a physical expression of faith that they are receiving that blessing from God. For more questions and answers like this, we encourage you to pick up a free copy of our booklet, AVPC Worship: Questions You ve Wanted to Ask located in the Parlor and Welcome Center.
