6 CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION O Mighty God, we humble ourselves for faculties misused, opportunities neglected, words ill-advised. We repent of our folly and inconsiderate ways, our broken resolutions, untrue service, our backsliding steps, our vain thoughts. Bury our sins in the ocean of Jesus blood and let no evil result from a careless temper, unseemly behavior, or provoking pettiness. Give us repentance unto life; Cement our oneness with our blessed Lord Jesus, that faith may adhere us to him, that love may entwine us more tightly, that his Spirit may pervade every fiber of our being. SILENT CONFESSION OUR FOUNDATION OF HOPE AND PERSEVERANCE Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay. 8 SERMON 2018 Pilgrimage Rev. Luis Orteza One way we conceive of our identity as God s people is that of a sojourner (1 Peter 2:11). It points to this idea that we are on a journey. In less than 24 hours, we will commence our journey into You look back to 2017, and you may have had your share of triumphs and successes. Some of you may have had your share of setbacks, disappointments, discouragements, and even a sense of failure to the point of giving up. You may want to forget 2017 and look forward to But how do we face 2018 with all the challenges and the unknowns we might have to face? To answer the question, I would like for us to take a look at Paul s admonition found in 1 Corinthians 15:58 and see if we find encouragement as we face I. The admonition to be steadfast and immovable II. The admonition to abound in the work of the Lord III. Conclusion 6

9 GIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER (Gluten-free bread is available in the Welcome Center. As the elements are passed, feel free to state the following words to the person next to you in the pew: Bread This is Christ s body, given for you. Juice This is Christ s blood, shed for the forgiveness of your sins. ) Behold the Lamb (The Communion Hymn) Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us - and we remember the promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross. The body of our Savior Jesus Christ, torn for you - eat and remember; the wounds that heal, the death that brings us life paid the price to make us one. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of love around the table of the King. The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you - drink and remember he drained death s cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God. So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of his sacrifice as a sign of our bonds of grace around the table of the King. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond - and to remember our call to follow in the steps of Christ as his body here on earth.
