We welcome you and hope you are blessed as we magnify and worship God today. Please sign the pew register so we can know of your visit and have an opportunity to get to know you. If today is your first time visiting our church, consider picking up a visitor brochure and gift in the the back of the Sanctuary. If you have questions about a sermon or anything related to the Bible or Christianity, consider joining our pastor in the Library (room across the hallway from the piano side entrance to the Sanctuary) during the Sunday School hour. You are welcome to join us any Sunday. The Library is also available during both Worship services for nursing mothers. And for parents with small children who are unable to use our nursery or sit in the Sanctuary, please take advantage of our Sermon Listening Room, located across the hallway from the organ side entrance to the Sanctuary.
PRELUDE The Church s One Foundation WORSHIP SERVICE JANUARY 20, 2019 The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth, her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. The church shall never perish! Her dear Lord to defend, to guide, sustain, and cherish, is with her to the end; though there be those that hate her, and false sons in her pale, against all foe or traitor she ever shall prevail. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 33:1-5 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. INVOCATION THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 1
THE WELCOME OF GOD SONGS OF PRAISE Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity, joined with power. He is able, he is able; he is willing; doubt no more. Come ye needy, come, and welcome, God s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall; If you tarry til you re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, this he gives you, tis the Spirit s rising beam. Jesus, Lover of My Soul Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, til life s storm is past; Safe into the haven guide; receive my soul at last. Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; Leave, oh leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, help from thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head in the shadow of thy wing. 2
Thou, O Christ, are all I want, more than all in thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy Name, I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, let me take of thee; Spring thou up within my heart; for all eternity. God, You re So Good (11:00 AM Service) Amazing love that welcomes me, The kindness of mercy That bought with blood wholeheartedly My soul undeserving. (Chorus) God, you re so good. God, you re so good. God, you re so good. You re so good to me. Behold the cross, age to age And hour by hour. The dead are raised, the sinner saved The work of your power. (Chorus) (Bridge) I am blessed, I am called I am healed, I am whole I am saved in Jesus name. Highly favored, anointed Filled with your power For the glory of Jesus name. (Repeat Bridge) And should this life bring suffering, Lord, I will remember What Calvary has bought for me, Both now and forever. (Chorus) Words and music by Brett Younker, Brooke Ligertwood, Kristian Stanfill, Scott Ligertwood. 3
CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Heavenly Father, In the righteousness of Christ we boldly approach your throne of grace to spread our wants and desires before you. We confess that apart from Christ, we are unworthy of your blessings and mercies; we are disobedient, rebellious, discontent, proud, envious, and vengeful. As we confess our guilt, help us to feel it deeply; yet also help us to remember there is hope in you, and to see the Lamb who takes away our sins. Through Jesus may we return to you, listen to you, trust in you, delight in your law, obey you, and be upheld by you. Guard our understanding from error, our affections from love of idols, our lips from speaking guile, our conduct from vice, and our character from evil. Make us to be more and more like Jesus, in whom we place all our hope. Amen. Based on Valley of Vision Act of Approach. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON Isaiah 55:1-2, 6-7 Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. HYMN OF RESPONSE (see insert) Out of My Bondage, My Sorrow, and Night 4
WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Members and Visitors please register your attendance on the Attendance Register. RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS (11:00 AM Service) Josh Duemler, Kerith Helms PASTORAL PRAYER Children age 4-1 st grade may be dismissed to Worship Center at this time. SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 19:1-15 (Pew Bible, page 824) 1 Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, Is it lawful to divorce one s wife for any cause? 4 He answered, Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. 7 They said to him, Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away? 8 He said to them, Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery. 10 The disciples said to him, If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry. 11 But he said to them, Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it. 13 Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, 14 but Jesus said, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away. 5
SERMON Family Life Rev. Brad Allison It doesn t take any special insight to notice that family life as envisioned in the Scriptures is under attack today. Biblical norms of human sexuality that have been widely accepted for millennia, both inside and outside the Church, are now being challenged. Marriage as a vital institution within society is being called into question. Even the good news of declining divorce rates becomes bad news when we realize that the decline is due entirely to a decline in the number of marriages. As Christians, we don t get to decide our practices and values in these areas of marriage, family and child-rearing. Jesus is our Lord, and we submit to him in all things. Today s passage is all about Jesus instructions for family life, a matter arising out of an attempt to get Jesus into trouble. I. The Married Life v. 1-9 II. The Single Life v III. 9 GIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS Satisfied All my life long I had panted for a drink from some cool spring that I hoped would quench the burning of the thirst I felt within. Feeding on the filth around me till my strength was almost gone. Longed my soul for something better, only still to hunger on. Hallelujah! He has found me, the One my soul so long has craved! Jesus satisfies all my longings; through his blood I now am saved. Poor I was and sought for riches, something that would satisfy. But the dust I gathered round me only mocked my soul s sad cry. Well of water ever springing, Bread of Life so rich and free. Untold wealth that never faileth, my Redeemer is to me. Words by Clara T. Williams. Music by Karl Digerness. INSTALLATION OF OFFICER (8:30 AM Service) Elder: Ken Francis HYMN OF RESPONSE #559 Father, I Know That All My Life BENEDICTION POSTLUDE In preparation for our Faith Promise at the 2019 Missions Conference, the next few weeks we will be looking at different ways the Lord provides for us so that we in turn can give. How does God provide? Through Our Abundance Psalm 67:7 says, God will bless us, and all the earth will fear him. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. God may bless through increased income or through decreased expenses, through good investment returns or a one-time windfall. Words and Music used by permission. All rights reserved. CCLI #
