2 Pastoral Letter Dear Friends, Minister: Rev. Mark E. Johnstone M.A., B.D Session Clerk: Gordon Morrison Treasurer: John M. Thomson Secretary: Lynn Hay Church Officer: Margaret Morrison Church Organist: David Burns Editor: Sandra Burns Church Website: Registered Charity No. SC For many people their summer holiday will be a dim and distant memory. Some folks will be focusing on the October break with a sense of freedom from the daily routine. I mentioned Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it before Audrey and I travelled to Malta this year. This is the first time we have visited the island and it was a great place to explore. We visited the Grand Harbour and the various islands associated with Malta. There were accounts of the Knights of Malta and their construction work, the hospitality they offered and the place of safety to those involved in the crusades. This was all very interesting. During the Continued overleaf The Parishioner October
3 war Malta was a strategically important island and held out against bombardment and siege. It held out against the enemy and at the end of the War was awarded the George Cross. An emblem of this award is part of the Maltese flag today. While in Malta we were delighted to meet up with some folks from home. Some were in the neighbouring hotel others in a nearby town. None of this was planned and it was delightful to meet up with friends so far away from home. There was something about meeting them out of context. Seeing really familiar faces in an unfamiliar place. Sharing some time with them enhanced the holiday. The welcome you give and receive can often shape the mood of a trip. extend to others. Some known to us and others not known to us. The Bible often speaks of hospitality. In the letter to the Hebrews you read these words Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.. Jesus says in Matthew 25 Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. The challenge of my holiday to Malta and my constant reading of the bible must be to practice hospitality. As Jesus said Go and do likewise Kindest regards Thinking of how Malta was historically a place of hospitality I was aware of the welcome we Find us on: 2 The Parishioner October st mary s kirkintilloch

9 Dates for Your Diary Reap a good harvest If you ve been out and about in the countryside in recent months, you ll have noticed that there was a bumper crop of blackberries and other fruit this year. That was no accident. It was because, from Spring onwards, there has been just the right amount of heat and cold, rain and sun, to make the plants bring forth their best. It s the same when we are making Jesus known. Only God knows if the people we meet are ready to respond to the Gospel. We might be simply planting a seed, and that person still has years to go, or it may be that the person is finally ready to become a follower of Jesus. This autumn, as we prepare for Christmas, let s be intentional praying for friends and family members who don t yet know Jesus. Let s ask God for opportunities to sensitively share the Good News of Jesus. And let s be ready to serve and speak in Jesus name. Harvest Festival Harvest Festival this year will be celebrated on Sunday 08 October. Donations will be gratefully received and should be brought to Church on the Sunday morning. Donations can either be produce or, if you prefer, a monetary donation. Suggestions for produce are: cereals, tinned soup / meat / fish / vegetables / tinned fruit. Also acceptable are tea, coffee, sugar, rice, pulses, red / brown sauce and vinegar. No fresh products please. 8 The Parishioner October 2017

Others If it s true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for? Dear Colleagues, Together We Pray is a national prayer initiative, running from September 2017 to May 2018, calling the Church to come together 16 The Parishioner October 2017 Continued overleaf
18 in prayer. This year, the General Assembly asked the Church to focus on praying for God to renew us and particularly to pray as we think about priorities for the future. The call to prayer grew out of last year s On the Road initiative when meetings were held around the country to listen to the hopes and concerns of church members and to explore the challenges of ministry and discipleship in the 21st century. Throughout the year, we will support your efforts through preparing prayer resources (that will be available online over the course of the initiative) and highlighting opportunities to pray for the future work of the Church. In particular, there will be a National Day of Prayer on November 25 in which we hope you will want to be involved. We encourage you to meet on this day in a small group, as a congregation or even as a Presbytery. Alongside the National Day of Prayer, look out for the brand new How we Pray series, On the Road events, the Prayer Diary, Advent and more throughout the year. Find out more atwww. churchofscotland.org.uk/togetherwepray. We would appreciate if you could please pass this on to those you think will be interested. Watch our launch video here to find out more about what will be coming up. 19 The Rectory... St James the Least My dear Nephew Darren Having informed you of why clergy must always wear black shoes in church, my belief is that all those who hold any office in church should be similarly dressed. Altar servers have the tendency to arrive wearing what I am informed are called trainers. Were they black it would be tolerable, but they seem to be without exception either brilliant white or luminous pink. When they arrive so attired I insist they remove them and serve in the sanctuary in their socks. Since our church floor is several degrees colder than permafrost, it normally takes them the rest of the morning with their feet in a bucket of hot water before circulation returns. They do not make that mistake a second time. The rule applies to members of the choir also; my only concession is that ladies are allowed to wear shoes with heels. But that can present its own hazards. Miss Threlfall recently appeared in heels that, by chance, were the exact size and shape of the holes in our beautiful Victorian heating gratings in the nave floor. During the procession at the start of the Service, her heel wedged in one. She is a lady of some determination and refused to stop, thereby holding up the procession and letting the congregation know something was amiss. So she proceeded, now with a twelve inch square cast iron grid firmly attached to her foot. As she gallantly clanked up the aisle, rocking slightly since one leg was now several stones 18 The Parishioner October 2017 heavier, one of our basses, completely innocent of what had happened, stepped into thin air. Half of his body disappeared vertically downwards as the other half proceeded in a horizontal easterly direction, scattering tenors like skittles. I continue to visit him in hospital. Our organist arrives wearing black shoes, but once hidden in the organ loft, removes them and plays the organ in soft shoes. Or he did; these days he never removes his shoes at all. At Evensong on Sundays, my dog comes with me to swell the congregation and wanders round the church benignly as the Service progresses. After one Service, our organist came to retrieve his shoes only to find them missing. Their absence was inexplicable - until two weeks later when I found them buried in the Rectory rose garden. Churchwardens, of course, know the rules for correct footwear - that is why they have been elected to serve in such a distinguished office - although I do feel that Admiral Hopkinson s practice of wearing white spats on top of his shoes when the bishop is here, a little excessive - even rather flash. Maintaining this dress policy once you have your own church, will be maintaining the true faith. Your loving uncle, Eustace
