1 Capham & District Newsetter Number 106, Apri 2017 If it were sunset, then Dr. John Farrer, with his hat and his camera, woud be at Davis Bay in Sechet or Lee Bay in Pender Harbour. The Yorkshire Daes sunsets were equay beautifu through his eyes and his ens, and we coud be found at the sandpit, high up on the od road to Newby Cote, or over the moors on the way to Bowand Knotts. In spring, we d be in the intoxicatingy scented buebe woods of Capham or Oxenber. Perhaps you saw him as both a doctor and a friend and you spoke of your main compaint, then music, iterature, photography, aging, geoogy, or astronomy. Maybe he took you fying when you were both younger. He may have brought you or your chid into this word, administered aesthetic for an operation, attended you or your chid s graduation from Pender Harbour Secondary Schoo, or shared a goodbye at the funera of your oved one. Perhaps he was a mora compass for you as he was for me. John seemed quiet, but he wasn t reay at a. He simpy did not have the need to fi a space with himsef or show off what he knew. He was a good istener and found virtuay any topic, in and out of our universe, interesting. John was passionate about the important vounteer work of the hospita auxiiaries in each community and the work of the Hospita Foundation. He fet that the medica rounds each week and the morbidity and mortaity rounds heped to John Peter Farrer October 3rd, 1948 December 23, 2016 make both the hospita and the community safer and stronger through education and sharing. Even through his stay at Lions Gate and Vancouver Genera Hospitas, he was working on a presentation to rounds for a three hospitas. It was most definitey the other side of the gurney for John but he bore it with patience and a gracious attitude. One of the comforts he missed most during that time, was the mushy ove of his cat, JJ. Thank you Cindy. Our hearts were at rest. John was born in Mebourne, Austraia to Dr. John Anson Farrer, a genera practitioner, and Joan Agnes Farrer, an O.R. nurse. At the age of five, John and his famiy, incuding itte sister Annie, made the voyage aboard the SS Oronsay to Engand and then up to North Yorkshire. They had inherited the Ingeborough Estate, centered in the deightfu viage of Capham, in the picturesque Yorkshire Daes. As was the custom, John was sent to boarding schoo at the age of eight. This was not a good experience for a gente, curious and independent boy. It did, however, suppy him with a strong education. After competing his medica degrees at University Coege in London, he reaized he coud compete his residency at a newy opened medica schoo in Newfoundand. Continued on page 4

3 CHURCH NEWS The Vicar s thoughts... Aeuia! Procaim the Good News Young Christians who have just come into the faith often ask: Why is the resurrection so important? How can an event, which took pace 2,000 years ago, have any reevance for us today? Three very simpe statements (not origina to me) wi bring us to the heart of the matter. First, the resurrection of Christ assures us of God s forgiveness. Forgiveness is one of humanity s greatest needs. Jack Winsow, in his book Confession and Absoution says that the head of a arge Engish menta hospita remarked that he coud dismiss haf of his patients immediatey if they coud be assured of forgiveness. The resurrection is convincing proof that Christ s sacrifice on the cross was accepted, and this gives us the assurance that a our sins can be forgiven. Second, the resurrection of Christ assured us of God s power. It is one thing to be forgiven, it is another to ive above the power of sin. Men may change their ways, say some writers from non- Christian reigions, but they can t change their character. We, God can change peope s character. He did so with the aposte, Pau, with Peter, and with countess others. Pau writes in Corinthians 1. ch 15 that we might comprehend the power reeased in the word through the resurrection. Third, the resurrection assured us of God s utimate triumph. Other reigions and ideoogies have very vague ideas about the future. Some beieve in endess cyces of reincarnation, others nirvana. Christians, however, have a different hope. Death for a beiever is nothing more than the anteroom to gory. The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith. On the ast day, by God s grace and mercy, we too wi rise from the dead, body and sou and receive the gift of everasting ife in the new Kingdom. What better verses to commend than 1 Corinthians 15 v 20-22: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have faen aseep. For as in Adam a die, so aso in Christ sha a be made aive. May you a have the hope of Easter in your hearts and ives. Dr Farrer initiay introduced the Ingeborough Estate Nature Trai in 1970, and with his consent, the residents of Capham Viage have had the enjoyment of the trai for neary 50 years. Unfortunatey, there are times when the Nature Trai access has been abused by non-residents, for exampe not making payment at the ticket machine. 7 Scandimoot returns This year we have booked the Spring Bank Hoiday weekend, Apri 28th to Monday, May 1st, and are again based in Ingeborough Ha and the Viage Ha. You wi hear a ot of fidde paying over the weekend, incuding that mysterious instrument the hardanger fidde. This has twice the usua number of strings or more; the extra ones ie underneath the ones that are bowed and resonate, giving an incrediby rich sound. But our musician participants pay a wide number of instruments, and come from a over the UK and further to earn wonderfu iting tunes. The dancers wi be working hard to get the subte rhythms of the music into their feet and practise the swiring fast turning dances that go with them. You wi get the chance to see performances of a this once on Sunday evening in Victoria Ha in Sette (book tickets from the box office) and then again at a free concert in St James Church especiay for Capham residents on Monday, May 1st at approximatey 1.30pm. There wi be posters and pubicity nearer the time. We are aso panning a concert on Monday evening in Meing, and the previous week some of our artists wi be working with young peope in a schoo near Lancaster. As aways we aim to bring the best of Scandinavian music and dance to the UK, and share it with you as much as we can. 8 Now that spring is on its way it s great to see the paypark starting to be used again. It aso means that some maintenance is needed to keep the paypark in good condition and to make sure that it remains a safe and fun pace for our chidren. The weeky mowing started at the end of ast month, and over the next coupe of weeks other tasks such as fence repairs wi be carried out. On Saturday, 22nd Apri at 3pm pease come to the paypark to hep spread new bark, cean the pay equipment, and do any jobs that need doing. A are very wecome, especiay if your chidren benefit from the paypark, so pease et me know if you can hep. The park is managed entirey by vounteers, but numbers have been dropping and park management is now down to ony a few peope in particuar me! I ve been invoved for more than ten years (and other vounteers have been invoved for even onger). I organise the mowing and other maintenance, and as treasurer I bank donations, write grant appications, organise payments, sort out insurance, and keep the accounts up to date. I aso write these artices! As our son is growing up and hardy ever uses the paypark now, it s time that other oca parents get invoved in running the paypark the more the merrier, so that responsibiities and vounteer time are shared out more fairy. Athough I m happy to continue as Capham Paypark treasurer, I don t want to continue with organising park maintenance and doing most of the mowing. Pease contact me if you re interested. The paypark reies on donations to cover annua costs such as park and mower insurance, maintenance, rent and the RoSPA inspection (which the park aways passes). Income over the ast year was raised through the coection tins in the viage shop, Tracey s vintage shop, the bunkbarn and the paypark itsef, as we as from saes of James Atkin s atest CD (avaiabe from the shop) and donations from generous individuas, the Bradford Pothoing Cub and Capham Parish Counci. We aso received a grant from the Roger Stott Community Fund, managed by the Yorkshire Daes Miennium Trust, which contributed towards the cost of an additiona sheter. However, insurance and other costs continue to rise and so this year our income hasn t covered our expenditure. Fundraising woud be more effective if more oca peope got invoved. The park is a great asset to the viage, but it needs more peope to be concerned about its upkeep, so if your chidren use the paypark or if you just want to hep then pease get invoved.
