Amen. Acts 8:26-40 An angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go over to this chariot and join it. So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, Do you understand what you are reading? He replied, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. 3

4 The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized? He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. 5 has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, "I love God," and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. The flowers at the Altar today were given by Richard and Juliana (Gleissner) Frieze, and Douglas and Theresea (Gleissner) VanSant in loving memory of their father, Ludwig Gleissner, on what would have been his 100 th birthday. The flowers at the Chancel steps today are given by Deacon Sally in memory of her mother, Jane Moore Stanton. Today would have been her 89 th birthday. If you have donated flowers today, after the service, please take your flowers to a family member or shut in. ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in Today s Liturgy: Today is the Fifth Sunday of Easter, and the last Sunday prior to Fr. Messer s arrival as our new Rector. We owe Fr. Lacquintano a deep debt of gratitude for his many years of supply with us, his profound preaching, and his sincere support of the ministries of St. John s Church. As is our practice at St. John s, all of the music used in the liturgy, whether congregational, choral, or instrumental, is selected to coordinate with the themes of the prayers and lessons. The Choir will sing a portion of Psalm 22 in an Anglican Chant setting by Samuel Sebastian Wesley ( ), a nephew of the Methodist Wesleys, and one of the most respected Anglican musicians of his age. The Offering Anthem is a setting of a portion of the Song of Solomon by Arlen Clarke (b. 1954), an American singer and Director of Music at St. Mary s Catholic Church, Greenville, SC. The text reflects closely on the Epistle lesson. Because we are saying goodbye to Fr. Lacquintano today, the choir will sing a Benediction Response which is a setting of the Aaronic Benediction (Numbers 6:24) by Peter C. Lutkin ( ). The Prelude is a setting of our Communion hymn by James Biery (b. 1956), an American Organist/Director of Music (Grosse Point 7

8 Presbyterian Church, MI) and a respected composer. The Postlude is a grand Passacaglia a series of variations over a repeated bass pattern by Dietrich Buxtehude ( ), a mentor of J. S. Bach who needs no introduction here at St. John s. [NOTE: If the organ blower motor has not been restored, the scheduled Organ Prelude and Postlude will be changed or omitted.] St. John s Choir: If you are interested in joining us as we continue to sing and lead worship through the month of June including a special Installation Liturgy for our new Rector, Fr. Charles Messer (date to be determined) and a celebration of St. John s Day, June 24 or if you know of someone who might be interested, please see Minister of Music, Bill Clisham, immediately after the Postlude or at Coffee Hour. No auditions are required, but a get acquainted meeting with Bill is necessary for placement and music assignment. Rehearsals are every Sunday morning at 9:00 AM prior to the 10:30 AM Choral Eucharist. There are no scheduled mid-week rehearsals after Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 52 people this week. The May calendar is posted on the office door. No one has volunteered. Opportunities for May: 5/1, 5/8, 5/15, 5/22, 5/29.
