Ein feste Burg A Mighty Fortress Is Our God No hymn is more closely identified with the Protestant Reformation than A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. (It is No. 275 in our hymnal.) Martin Luther himself created both words and music for this hymn in the year 1529 and it is still one of the most beloved hymns throughout the Christian world. Even Roman Catholics sing it! No composer of music for Protestant worship is more revered than Johann Sebastian Bach, who served several Lutheran churches in Germany during his career. Among the many cantatas that Bach composed is an especially beautiful one based upon this hymn. In celebration of the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the Idlewild Choir and soloists will be joined by orchestra in a performance of this masterpiece during the 11:00 worship hour on Reformation Sunday, October 29. 3 Consider what it means to give A letter to the congregation from Pastor Steve Montgomery By the time you read this, I hope all of you have had a chance to reflect prayerfully on what it means to Take the Next Step, which is our stewardship theme this year. Some of you have already filled out your pledge cards and turned them in. We are grateful. One thing that our pledge analysis demonstrates is that every gift is important. We need our largest donors to continue demonstrating the grace of liberality, and we simply could not do without those widow s mite pledges that are made. We need 100% participation if we are serious about taking our baptism vows seriously and planting seeds for the future of Idlewild. I know, I know. There is a routine for the stewardship season that many of us who have been around the church find, well, routine! Same song, different verse. Yet, on another level, I have found that it is not the pervasive money talk in the church that is the problem; rather it is the fear of discussing finances at all. Money remains the taboo topic for American Christians. Anthropologists define a culture taboo as something so sacred, so powerful, that to touch it or even talk about it is to expose oneself to considerable danger. We need 100% For many of us, money squarely fits the definition. We would rather talk about sex and politics anything else other than money. Which is, in some ways, rather surprising. We are in a country in which conspicuous consumption reigns and the pursuit of the almighty dollar spurs our work and (according to society) our worth. Yet we avoid money conversations in public, except maybe how the proposed tax plan might affect us. And ministers are no exception. Many church leaders, out of their desire not to ruffle too many feathers, approach stewardship apologetically. Never mind that Jesus talked about money and giving more than anything else, save the Kingdom of God. Never mind that the Old Testament sets forth laws that will remind the people that all good gifts come from God, and that there is joy in giving. You ll be hearing more about what it means to take the next step, but as you consider your pledge this year, I hope you will consider the following questions: 1) What is your earliest family memory of giving and volunteering? 2) Who have been some of your heroes and role models that reflect a generous life? 3) To what people and places do you feel a sense of gratitude? 4) What are the one or two life experiences that have shaped who you are today? 5) What is precious to you? 6) What values do you want to pass on to your family and friends? And then, take delight in the joy of giving. participation if we are serious about taking our baptism vows seriously and planting seeds for the future... 3

Common areas for legal advice include housing issues, veterans issues, child support, child custody, driver s license revocations, expungements, debt collection issues, wills, powers of attorney, debt collection judgments, bankruptcy, and consumer issues such as title/payday loans. If you are an attorney or paralegal and want to volunteer, please let us know soon! This does qualify for CLE hours. Volunteer hours are 9:00 to 1:00 Saturday, October, 21. For more details about the clinic and how it works, visit This is not an evangelical event. People of all faiths are welcome. 5

6 Dates to remember A Note from the Building Committee We had a great turn-out for the congregational building updates a couple of weeks ago. Members saw the significant revisions made to the building plans, especially regarding the entrances on the west side, and reasons for the changes were discussed. Part of the talk centered around the extensive work needed to update the Jones Building infrastructure, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing and safety requirements, as well as energy-saving considerations and ease of access throughout the buildings, Many thanks to all the members who are so engaged in the project. It s exciting to know that the big construction work will begin very soon, now that the hazardous material removal process is completed. The Building Committee will continue to update you regularly, and you can always visit the More Idlewild webpage ( for other info and FAQs. As a congregation, we are building the future together for Idlewild and for Memphis! Building Committee: Kirk Bobo & Steve Valentine, chairs; Chick Hill, Betsy Hood, Albert Johnson, Mark Jones, Lisa Mallory, Charlie McCrary, Josh Poag, Elizabeth Rouse, and Joellyn Sullivan, members; and Pastor Steve Montgomery, Doris Hurdle, Rebekah Abel Lamar, Jenni Brooks, & Ginny Moore, staff liaisons. The Back Fence Send your news to Jenni Brooks at jbrooks@idlewildchurch.org. Meghan Underwood, the daughter of our own Brigid Underwood, ran a sub-minute mile in a race Sept. 4. She lapped the rest of the field, and word has it that she was hoping to break 12 minutes for the 3,200, but actually broke 11 minutes! Meghan is a student at Briarcrest. We offer condolences in these deaths in our extended church family: m Vera Ward, mother of Ray Ward and grandmother of Amy Ward, Emily Ward, and Ashley Ward Woodruff We re 11 Can t make it to church Sunday morning? Whatever the situation, you can still join in worship with the church community because we re 11! The purpose of CAFE is to offer tools for lifelong resilience for people of all ages. Tools of resilience include therapy techniques to guide families through grief; activities that involve parents and children in play; healthy mechanisms for selfregulation of emotions, and more. The broad plan for the CAFE includes a satellite for Baptist Hospital s Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief. This program moved into the CAFE house in late July and already has provided free counseling for many clients. The CAFE plan also includes a Universal Parenting Place, which provides free, front-end counseling for parents and creative alternative therapies for families. The CAFE Universal Parenting Place is scheduled to open in the CAFE house in late October. In the fall of 2018 CAFE plans to open a new Idlewild Preschool that will offer new curriculum geared toward healthy early childhood brain development and teaching self-regulation skills to even the youngest children. The preschool will be housed on the first floor of the Jones Building, following renovation.
