Anne Chapel St. Margaret Church St. Philip Church 178 Elm St (Rte 1) 6 Saco Ave 404 Goodwins Mills Rd Biddeford, Maine Old Orchard Beach, Maine Lyman, Maine St. Brendan Chapel (seasonal) 40 Lester B. Orcutt Blvd, Biddeford Pool, Maine Rev. Msgr. René T. Mathieu, Pastor Rev. Robert Gaudreau, Parochial Vicar Deacon Robert Parenteau Deacon Kevin Jacques Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) We welcome Bishop Robert Deeley to the 11 am Mass this Sunday at St. Joseph Church as we kick off the 25th anniversary of Saint James School and over 100 years of Catholic education in our community. After Mass, an open house and reception will be held at the school located on 25 Graham Street. All are invited. Beginning this weekend and at various Masses during September and October, a beautiful handmade quilt is being raffled off to benefit the school. (2) Faith formation programs begin in our parish this Sunday and Monday. The Church in the USA designates the 3rd Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday. This is an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate those who serve as catechetical leaders, youth ministers and catechists as we begin a new year of faith formation. A few weeks ago, I participated in a program designed to introduce those who have volunteered to teach the younger children in our parish formation programs. I very much admire their dedication and interest in this important ministry of supporting parents who are passing on the faith to another generation. It is worth remembering that faith formation is ongoing; it is something that is part of a lifelong commitment to growing in and understanding the gift of faith. I thank the parish staff devoted to this area of parish life and to the volunteers who work with them to make our many programs possible. (3) Many Catholics are sad when family members cease being active in the Church. A 7-week presentation beginning September 25 will explore ways we can invite loved ones to resume the practice of the faith. Please register online or by contacting the parish office. (4) Although the impending sale was reported in local newspapers weeks ago, the actual sale of Notre Dame Church and rectory was scheduled to close on September 15 (closings often take place with little notice because of the legalities involved). The sale of this property is a milestone for the parish as it represents disposition of the last buildings impacted by the cluster plan which led to the formation of. The Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto furnishings and statues have been saved and will be incorporated in a newly constructed grotto at St. Joseph Church, in the room adjacent to St. Anne Chapel, currently the meeting room of the Knights of Columbus. This too is in accord with the original cluster plan. (5) Meanwhile, the major project of replacing defective shingles atop St. Philip Church, rectory and hall has begun. A similar project will be needed at some point for St. Margaret Church, since it too has defective shingles from the same manufacturer. (6) We have begun our fall/ winter schedule of Masses. At Saint Brendan in Biddeford Pool, a Saturday 5:30 pm Mass will continue through October 7 (Columbus Day weekend). Last Wednesday, the summertime 8 am Mass at St. Margaret in Old Orchard Beach was replaced by an 8:30 am Mass at St. James School in Biddeford to benefit our Catholic school students. Also at St. Margaret: the summer Sunday Mass schedule (8 am & 9:30 am) concluded last weekend; we have returned to the usual weekend schedule this weekend, September 16/17 (4 pm, 8:30 am, 10:30 am). (7) We made it! We received the news on September 8 that Good Shepherd Parish had achieved 101% of our goal for the 2017 diocesan Appeal. Parishioners have pledged $192,965 of our $190,745 goal (by this time last year (9/11/16), we had reached only $159,125). By the way, the statewide appeal has reached 99.4% of goal. If you have not yet pledged, please consider doing so. We will receive a kickback based on our total pledges paid up because our parish sponsors a Catholic school. LAST CALL!!! (8) A possible Joy in Action for this week based on Pope Francis apostolic exhortation on the joy of the family, Amoris Laetitae: Visit an elderly neighbor or a loved one in a nursing home. (9) Thank You of the Week: To those who organized, served and participated in our 8th annual parish picnic on the grounds of St. Philip Church last Sunday. Thank you! 4 SAINT JAMES CATHOLIC SCHOOL FAMILY FAITH FORMATION 25 Graham Street Phone Biddeford, ME FAX Website St. James School is Service, Academics, Faith, & Excellence St. James is a Catholic, parochial school committed to fostering spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional & physical growth in a S.A.F.E. and collaborative environment while empowering students to be creative, to think critically, to act responsibly, and to serve with integrity. Saint James School has established an endowment to help the longevity of the school. Endowments are established so only the interest can be used and the bulk of the money stays in the endowment fund. It will take some time to build up, but we have to start somewhere. Checks can be sent to Saint James School with endowment written in the memo line. Please remember any contribution to Saint James School is tax deductible. Please remember Saint James School in your estate planning so your beloved parochial school will be here for your children and your grandchildren and the Saint James family will continue to grow! They're burning realities many of us live with each day. Family members, friends, co-workers, & neighbors have left their first love. We, the body of Christ, are a body injured. The pain is real. We are, however, not without Hope. Our Lord made every person alive to be irresistibly drawn to three things: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. These inexhaustible gifts can be used to transform our conversations, our lives, and our loves - and ultimately our relationships with those we love who have wandered away. Join us this fall as we dive deep into the Good, the True, and the Beautiful, how the church for two thousand years has evangelized the world through these gifts from God, and the difference they can make to us trying to reach those we love.
