Good Shepherd Sunday is a special celebration of the particular way our parish relates to the Lord as the good shepherd who laid down his life for us. We are reminded of his generous love for humanity, especially for those who feel lost or abandoned -- a patient, sacrificial service. I pray this feast renews our care for one another. Today is also observed as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. (2) Sister Theresa Rounds, SCIM, General Superior of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, has informed me that the General Council of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Canada is pledging an additional $25,000 to support Saint James School during the school year. This gift adds up to a total of $125,000 over the 5 years the sisters have provided annual support to our parochial school -- since The gift is earmarked for student financial aid and reflects the mission of the Good Shepherd Sisters. We had already designated this welcome gift as the Venerable Marie Fitzbach Scholarship Fund in honor of the founder of the Congregation of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec. I hope parishioners and friends will consider additional contributions or bequests as a way to express appreciation for the good works of the sisters over the years and their continuing service in our community. Marie Fitzbach is the Canadian widow and mother who founded the religious community of the Good Shepherd Sisters, who live and minister in our parish. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged the heroic virtues practiced by Marie Fitzbach and thereby declared her to be Venerable. It was she who approved the request of a previous pastor to send sisters to staff the then new St. Joseph School in Biddeford. (3) The St. James School production of the Wizard of OZ on April 10/11 was delightful. The students and faculty clearly enjoyed putting on the show. I found the mix of traditional and new music & spoken lines particularly amusing and creative. Congratulations, everyone! (4) Twenty-two youth (and chaperones) attended the annual diocesan youth convention last weekend in Rockport. I thank parishioners for making this possible. It is an opportunity for our youth to make friends with other young Catholics around the state while giving them access to special liturgies, workshops and speakers. (5) Rejoice! Good Shepherd Liturgical Volunteer Conference: Don t forget Susan Conroy s presentation next Sunday afternoon, May 3. Her speech is open to everyone, and will be followed by special workshops for all Good Shepherd Parish liturgical ministers. (6) Thank You of the Week: When I was appointed pastor of Notre Dame Church, Saco nearly eleven years ago (September 2004), eight priests served the Catholic churches in Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Biddeford and Lyman. Since the merger of 2010, two deacons have taken on responsibility for most of our funerals and weddings outside of Mass. Retired priests provide invaluable help and moral support for the three assigned priests. I realize that some things slip through the cracks, but I believe the most important needs are being met with the help of a dedicated staff and volunteers. Over and over again, parishioners quietly encourage their three priests with friendly acknowledgement and prayerful support. Thank you! JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Saint James School was proud to watch Aine Mahony read her speech on "What Family Means to Me" at a recent rotary meeting. Aine was the first place winner at Saint James School and wrote a speech rich in imagery and visualization. She presented herself beautifully and was complimented by others in attendance. Yuriy Reiter was the second place winner and Allison Fournier was the third place winner. Each speech was excellent. We are so proud of our Saint James students! (Sept 21-27) Pope Francis will be visiting the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia this September. His visit will come at the conclusion of the event, but the whole event looks pretty incredible! We (Josh & Pam Houde) are planning to attend, and hope to gather a group of interested families and young adults to join us. Unlike many of the other trips available, we are hoping to make this trip as affordable as possible by driving our personal vehicles, and taking advantage of some of the inexpensive housing options we have found. Good Shepherd Liturgical Volunteer Conference, May 3, Most Holy Trinity Church, 1-3:30 pm This conference is for all those who are involved in helping to make our Masses happen at Good Shepherd. Keynote Speaker is author and EWTN Series Host, Susan Conroy. The keynote (1-2 pm) is open to all parishioners, and those involved in ministries will then head to workshops for Sacristans, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Altar Servers, Ushers/Greeters, Music Ministers, and Decorators. There is no fee for this conference. We do want you to register, however, so we can have appropriate spaces and refreshments ready. Register online: or call the main office, Fr. Joseph Manship will be presenting a Workshop entitled: An Introductory Workshop on Centering Prayer on Saturday, May 2nd, from 9 am to 2 pm, at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk, ME. Parish Yard Sale: The 3 Councils of the Knights of Columbus in the Good Shepherd Parish will be sponsoring a huge yard sale to benefit the Parish. The yard sale will be held at St. Luke Chapel on Saco Avenue in OOB on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30. During the months of April & May, parishioners are asked to drop off any good, unwanted items on Wednesdays from 9:00 am to Noon. Someone will be at the Chapel from 9 to noon each Wednesday to accept items, or you can call one of the following if you need items picked up: Roger Melancon, ; Ed Gallagher, ; or Mike Bolduc, Liturgical Publications, Inc. will have a sales representative available in our office, April 27-30, for those interested in placing a new ad in our bulletin. Second Collection This Weekend - Catholic Home Missions: Many dioceses here in the United States do not have enough priests to serve poorer parishes. These dioceses, classified as home missions, cannot provide for the unique needs of their parish communities. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please help strengthen the Church at home through your generosity to this appeal. "In-A-Pinch Non-Food Pantry" - During the month of May, Social Justice & Peace will be collecting personal care and cleaning supplies for families without the means to purchase them. Boxes, located in all churches, have posters with lists of the items needed. We need YOU to help. WILL YOU? Second Collection Next Weekend - Religious Education Programs: This parish collection goes to our Faith Formation program and is used to provide books and supplies to educate our children and youth in their Catholic Faith. Out of Offertory Envelopes? If for some reason you don't have your weekly envelopes, here are a few options: 1) You can call the office or request them at our website: and we'll get a replacement set mailed to you. In the meantime, just use plain envelopes for your contributions, write your name and envelope number on them, and your gifts will be credited to you. 2) You can also try our Online Giving System called WeShare: You can make a one- time or recurring donation using your credit card, checking or savings account.
