THE RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE is conducting a collection of baby items for Christmas for the mothers who go for help and support to Mother Seton House in Fryeburg and Saint Andre's Home in Biddeford. The collection will be this week-end. Please bring your donations of baby washes, shampoos, lotions, powders, diapers, infant clothing, blankets, and toys. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Pastor s Pondering This weekend we reach the third Sunday of Advent. With the fourth Sunday of Advent also being Christmas Eve, there is an urgency that we make the most of our remaining Advent journey. Reflect on what Bishop Robert Barron has to say about this weekend in his pamphlet, Advent Reflections. Today marks Gaudete Sunday, the Sunday of rejoicing. How many of us spontaneously associate God with Joy? In one sense, it is part of the tragedy of sin that we don t. in our alienation from God, we experience him as judge, as distant and demanding. But God s whole business is joy. He is a communion, a community of joy in his own inner life. He created everything as a joyous act of self-communication and seeks, above all, to share his joy with us. Our readings for this Gaudete Sunday contain a treasure trove of hints and recommendations in regard to being joyful. The first key to joy is allowing the Holy Spirit to live in you. The Spirit is the love that connects the Father and the Son. So pray for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which gives you fervor and a sense of mission and divine purpose. The second key to joy is allowing Christ to clean out the spirits of jealousy, hatred, violence and selfabsorption from your life. Will the work be a tad painful? Of course, but it is the necessary preparation for happiness. When we do this, we realize something of great importance: God s joy will produce joy in us. Listen to what the prophet Zephaniah says: He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love. He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals (3:17) What a wonderful co-inherence of divine and human joy that we celebrate in this third week of Advent! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: There will be a dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by a meeting on Thursday, December 21. The ushers come forward to begin the Offertory collection process. You lean over and ask your spouse if she has the envelope? She replies that she left it on the table for you to put in your pocket. It s safe! And it keeps God at the top of your giving list this Christmas season! THE MATTHEW 25 COMMITTEE continues to collect aluminum tabs off soda and other cans to benefit Portland s Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of children with serious illnesses, who are undergoing treatment at nearby medical facilities. Please be mindful of this worthy effort when you have holiday social gatherings. There is a container for your donated tabs in the Narthex. College Bible Study: Winter Series Are you home for the holidays and looking for an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new friends and grow in your relationship with Christ? We are offering a 3-week study from FOCUS called Ignite. The study will meet on Thursday nights at 7pm: Dec 28, Jan 4, and Jan 11. You can also her at catherine.gallerizzo@portlanddiocese.org On Friday evening, December 22 nd, Bishop Deeley will preside at a mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. During this mass, Alex Boucher, a seminarian from Good Shepherd Parish in the Biddeford/Saco area, and the seminarian who was at St. Therese for the summer will receive the rite of candidacy. This rite is one of the steps towards ordination to the priesthood. The mass begins at 5pm and all are welcomed. Christmas masses are traditionally well attended. This a tremendous opportunity for each of us to show hospitality to visitors coming home for the holidays, or parishioners who only attend mass a few times a year. Please be welcoming to all by helping to make space for people to sit, consider car pooling to ease congestion in the parking lots, and participate enthusiastically in singing the familiar Christmas hymns. This past week, the students in our sacramental preparation two classes experienced the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time. There were many smiles and relieved young people as they did something for the first time, and received the fullness of God s love. If it has been a while since you have experienced God s healing love in the sacrament, consider attending one of the extra times for reconciliation this week.
