Jack Dickinson, Parochial Vicar Deacon Robert Parenteau Deacon Kevin Jacques Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) St. Luke Chapel in Old Orchard Beach was officially listed for sale last week, and with that, members of the finance council and I recognize the need to improve parking at St. Margaret however and whenever possible. Attempts to sell the rectory have been mostly unsuccessful due to our unwillingness to give up more parking in the attached lot; the cost of maintaining the building is also a concern. One promising possibility I am strongly considering involves the demolition of St. Margaret Rectory. Saco & Biddeford Savings is also looking to increase their parking, and discussions with them could lead to a mutually beneficial agreement. Demolishing the rectory and paving the area would allow the parish to lease parking to the bank while retaining ownership and adding parking for weekend Masses. Good Shepherd Parish and SBS work together as neighbors both here and at Most Holy Trinity in Saco, and we are grateful to have them as good neighbors. In addition to that parking project, we have paved the small lot behind the church; we also plan to replace the church furnace & switch to propane before next winter, and to repair & improve the front steps almost all paid using St. Margaret s portion of the 5-year capital campaign. In addition, Knights of Columbus have agreed to paint the 2 nd floor rooms of the church hall. I presume everyone will appreciate these improvements. (2) As announced earlier, Bishop Deeley has authorized a special collection at all of Maine s Catholic churches on the weekend of June to provide aid and recovery support to the people impacted by the destructive earthquake that shook Nepal on April 25. The special collection will support Catholic Relief Services (CRS) as they address relief and recovery efforts. CRS is already on the ground in Kathmandu, the capital city and one of the most affected areas, distributing food and providing shelter. Materials for shelter, water purification, and hygiene kits will be needed for months to come. Because we already have a second collection scheduled for that weekend, your contribution to help the people of Nepal will be accepted as you leave Mass next weekend, at the exits of the church. (3) Christian stewards recognize Christ as the source of all good things. Grateful for the gifts we have received, we are eager to share them to show our love for Christ and for one another. The 2015 Catholic Appeal is one way all of us can support the mission of Christ s Church in Maine. If you have not yet done so, I invite you to pledge this week. You may place the pledge form in the basket during the usual offertory collection (or stamp & mail the envelope). (4) Bishop Deeley will celebrate the annual Silver & Gold Mass on Saturday, June 27, at the 4:00 pm Mass at Holy Family Church, 607 Sabattus St., Lewiston. This liturgy is a testimony to the goodness of marriage and the blessings it can bring, thanking God for graces given and asking for the continuing gift of grace to persevere in the commitments that have been made. Second Collection Next Weekend - Landscape & Grounds: Your donations to this collection will help offset costs to maintain and beautify church grounds. The expenses include spring cleanups, sweeping our parking lots, trimming trees and bushes, covering the costs to mulch and minimally add plantings and flowers. Next Weekend: Special Collection for Earthquake Relief in Nepal (at the Door): Bishop Deeley has authorized a special collection at all of Maine s Catholic churches to provide aid and recovery support to the people impacted by the destructive earthquakes that shook Nepal in recent weeks. Proceeds of this collection support Catholic Relief Services (CRS) as they address relief and recovery efforts. Materials for shelter, water purification, and hygiene kits will be needed for months to come.
