1 Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church 315 Winchester Road Huntsville, AL Volume 14, Issue 1 January 2017 Speaking the Truth in Love...but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - Christ Ephesians 4:15 The Herald is a monthly publication of Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Members are encouraged to submit all newsworthy articles by the 20th of the month to newsletter@unionchapel-hsv.org. All articles are subject to editing for clarity and grammatical correctness.
2 From the Pastor s Pen I CAN DO ALL THINGS We must practice Christian virtues such as honesty, truth, and justice, (Philippians 4:8). If we hold on to these Christian virtues, our lives will be enriched day by day. God s peace will saturate our hearts as we grow in His grace. And finally, we will experience contentment, no matter what our state or condition may be. We ll be able to say, along with Paul, I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Paul declared in Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Paul reached this level of faith by learning to put everything behind him; to be content in whatever state he was in. We can find help for our Christian journey as we consider some specific things Paul learned. First, Paul, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, learned to put everything behind him, (Philippians 3:13). We must forget about the past, both the good and bad experiences. Baggage from the past can hinder our spiritual growth. As we step away from the past, the Holy Spirit will lead us into new experiences with the Lord. Secondly, Paul learned to focus on Christ. We too, must learn to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). Our focus should be on Christ every day! 2

4 Keeping Our Eyes on His Goals, Philippians 3: Have you ever attempted to walk in a straight line while looking at your feet? Try this on the beach sometime so you can look back at your footprints. You ll probably be surprised at how crooked the path is. But fix your eyes upon something far away, and each step will point in the desired direction - toward that distant focal point. Our lives are like this. If we set goals, then our decisions and thoughts will lead toward the desired end. On the other hand, if we bumble along without specific aims, we will wander and waste much precious time and energy. Goals are crucial to the well-lived life. Why, then, do so many people fail to formulate purposeful aims? Some simply do not see the importance of a plan, while others are too lazy to devise one or don t know how to go about it. Then there are those who lack faith in God s ability to help them achieve their aspirations. Think about the many goals Jesus had - they drove all that He did. His daily aims involved such things as serving others and teaching those who sought righteousness. But more than that, our Savior centered everything on a Wisdom to Live By primary purpose set even before time began: to lay down His life on the cross in order to save mankind from sin and glorify the Father. We were created to glorify the Lord and be fruitful in His service. Imagine the impact our lives could have if we asked God to guide our goals. Pray, What do You want to change about my life? What do You want to accomplish through me? Let Him determine on what and on whom you focus. ~Dr. Charles Stanley Wellness News Pass the...herbs and spices! Reducing your salt intake can be delicious. If a little is good, a lot is better, right? Not always. Case in point: salt. Your body needs about a teaspoon a day, but over time consuming too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. Unfortunately, we Americans tend to overdo it when it comes to salt consuming double the recommended daily limit! Processed foods and meats are two huge reasons why, since they re loaded with salt not only for the flavor but also for salt s preservative properties. In addition to doing your best to cut way back on processed foods and meats, another great way to reduce your salt intake is to add more herbs and spices to your diet. You ll reach for the salt shakers a lot less. In addition to great flavor, you ll also get vitamins, minerals, and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients! ~Cleveland Clinic Wellness 4

A good leader seeks God s direction. Is there anything more important in a leader than he or she seeking God s direction? Proverbs 16:1 says The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. Verse 3 adds, Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. And verse 9, The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. A good leader seeks the Lord, commits his way to the Lord, and the Lord establishes the next steps. ~Brent Rinehart (Crosswalk.com) Just a Thought... 7
