3 ..I still have a dream. Words From The Pastor It is a dream deeply rooted in the American Dream. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We Dream Too My dear brothers and sisters, many focus on the conclusion of Dr. King's famous speech which summed up his dream. However, many have forgotten the essence of the dream detailed in the body of his speech that day in Washington D.C. Many have forgotten that he dreamed about an end to poverty in America in which the poor are on an "island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity." Many have forgotten that the main thrust of Dr. King's movement was to lift people out of poverty and despair. Many have forgotten that his was a call for justice in a land where policemen were killing and beating our fathers, sons and daughters and walking away unscathed. Hear his words, "And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back." There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as people are victims of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as people are killing each other, and the world is full of mass murders. Many have forgotten his demand that "Justice run down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream." Many have forgotten his call for America to cash its promissory note that would open the door of opportunity for us, breaking down barriers of racism and hatred. Many have forgotten his call for us to challenge unjust laws and his denunciation of wars waged against impoverished people for profit and gain. Why? Because we have made up a dream and proceeded to interpret it. The dream we created uses statistics that document poverty to get grants for the well connected at the expense of the poor. The dream we created becomes silent about police brutality, killings and police murders if our protest will injure our political friends. The dream we created is distant and foreign to Dr. King's dream. We in many ways, can say like Nebuchadnezzar, "the thing (dream) is gone from me." Remember visions differ from dreams. Take a look for a moment at the word vision. A vision is a picture of what will be. A dreamer paints a picture of how things used to be and what he imagines they will be. A visionary does not talk about what was, but tells the story of what will be. \Every person has a vision that peers into the unseen realms of the distant future. What is our vision? I suggest that our dream or vision should be: -Of a time when every day will be a day of celebration and it s always howdy and never goodbye. -Of a day when the night of weeping has ended and joy has come in the morning. -Of a day when the wicked will cease from troubling and the weary will be at rest. -Of a day when the hearse will won`t roll and the siren song of the ambulance will be silenced forever. It`s the dream of a place where we`ll never, never grow old! So, we dream too, and please keep dreaming. But when you wake go to work and do your best to help make the world a better place. Because dreams do come true --keep dreaming! Your Servant Leader, O. Wendell Davis
4 Youth On The Move 4 Christ Place Your Hope In God At the end of every December, we begin to reflect on the past year. We think about the good, the bad, and the things we want to change in the New Year. We start thinking about our New Year s resolutions. We spend a lot of time coming up with a list of changes we would like to strive for in the New Year; and many of us will not commit to that list the entire month of January. As Christians we have to understand that we will have good days and bad days. It is okay to try and make changes that better ourselves, but nobody promised us that things were going to be easy. There is so much pressure in today s society on children and adults to be great and successful. To be great and successful, I suggest that you place your HOPE in God. God is unchanging in a world that is forever changing. If we keep Him constant and first in our lives, we will accomplish all of our goals. When we experience low points in life, we should put our trust in the Lord. He operates at his best when we are our worst. Let this be our resolution throughout the year. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:13 Reading The Bible With Children As infants, my sons received children s Bibles. The short stories and bright pictures were perfect for their early introduction to the Christian faith. Soon they started reading the stories back to us. But as their comprehension improved, children s Bibles became too young for them, while the regular Bible wording was still beyond their grasp. Then I tried reading from a modern-language paraphrase. I chose The Message, but others will work, too. No need to worry about a lack of pictures; kids are adept at imagining events. Not sure what passages to read? Consult the scripture references accompanying the stories in a children s Bible. Read the story yourself first, to know where to stop and to avoid less child-friendly passages. However you share God s Word with youngsters, there are no sweeter words to a Christian adult than Mom [Dad, Grandma, Auntie ], let s read the Bible! Join us for Youth Bible Study Wednesdays at
5 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Great Thoughts from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I HAVE A Dream On excellence: If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven played music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well. On repentance: We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people. On character: I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. On courage: We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear. On hope: We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope Brotherhood/Laymen Breakfast 9:00 a.m. Looking Ahead Sign Up today to be photographed and included in the 80th Church Anniversary Commemorative Church Directory.
