2 From the Pastor s Pen Except the Lord Build the House I recently had an opportunity to return to my home and take part in a dedication service at the church were my father serves. This opportunity gave me time to reflect and conclude that we often forget that God owns everything. He makes us stewards of His possessions. Everything we have belongs to God. When David desired to build God a house the Lord reminded him of the fact that no one could build a house for Him. If a house is built, it is the Lord who builds it! The house we live in is the Lord s, the church house is the Lord s, and all of the houses belong to the Lord. The Psalmist put it this way: Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. (Psalm 127) 84th Church Anniversary Encouraging the Elders While Preparing the Young ~John 2:14 NLT~ This makes it clear that when we think that we are the builders our labor is in vain. We must give God the glory for His creation and for providing the resources so we can do His will. It is His power and strength that enables us to build both spiritually and physically for the Kingdom. So let us be mindful that the Lord must do the building in our lives otherwise, all of our labor is in vain. 4 The place of fasting in prayer - Matthew 6: Jesus words about fasting represent His invitation to a deeper experience with God. As we place our physical desires under the Spirit s control, we let go of our grip on the material in order to embrace the spiritual. Reasons for fasting include: Cleansing from sin. When we let our spiritual guard down, we start thinking as the world does - protecting our rights instead of dying to self, or seeking to accumulate rather than sacrificing. Through these lapses, ungodly attitudes and habits can quietly take up residence in us, and we hardly notice. But God sees. They hinder our fellowship with Him, limit the effectiveness of our service, and erode our joy. Prayer combined with fasting will help us give God our undivided attention as He addresses our areas of sin. We, in turn, will find them grievous and be eager to let them go. Relationship alert! Invest in your friendships for better health and happiness. Keep your family close, and your friends closer? Friendships may be even more important than family relationships as you get older, according to new research. Two studies of nearly 280,000 people revealed that over a lifetime, friendships are a better predictor of health and happiness than family relationships. Parents, siblings, children, and extended family members can be a fantastic source of support, of course, but these relationships can also involve stressful dynamics. Unlike with families, there s often a winnowing process that happens with friendships over time - the stronger ones rise to the top, and you let go of the Wisdom to Live By Wellness News Guidance. God is willing to give us clear direction, but for some things, prayer in conjunction with fasting is more effective. That is how we gain a cleansed mind needed to hear what He is saying and a submitted spirit ready to accept His instructions. Protection. Through fasting, we gain insight into God s ways and receive help in identifying unhealthy or dangerous situations. As we submit to His authority and confess our need for protection, the Holy Spirit will give us discernment to make wiser decisions and avoid unnecessary pitfalls. Fasting coupled with prayer can also bring heightened spiritual awareness and more intimate communion with the Lord. Aren t these the deepest desires of our heart? ~Dr. Charles Stanley rest. Like Rome, friendships aren t built in a day, so the time to invest in your friendships is now, whether you re 30 or 70. Make a standing date with your besties, like a weekly yoga class and walk or a monthly dinner at your favorite restaurant. Start an annual friend reunion with far-flung pals and stay in touch by phone the rest of the year. Remember that it s never too late to make new friends. If there s someone you connect with but don t know well, reach out and make plans. It could be the beginning of a beautiful, and health-promoting, friendship. ~Cleveland Clinic Wellness 4

5 National Baptist Congress of Christian Education Congress Dance Director Adrienne Savage Graduates Ministers Julian & Toni Savage and Jenise Showers-Bradshaw irock Youth Rally Choir participants Charlie Lockhart IV and Grayson Lockhart Union Chapel Youth Ministry Creative Workshop Union Chapel s first Creative Workshop was held Thursday, July 27 - Saturday, July 28. The theme for the threeday workshop was Little Hands with Mighty Minds. The mission of the workshop was to offer creative spiritual inspiration by refreshing and encouraging the imagination of your minds. The participants had the opportunity to use their imaginations to develop creative design projects in relation to scripture. The overall program consisted of 13 creative activities in which youth learned team-building skills, enjoyed fellowship and fun learning God s Word. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. ~Proverbs 22:6~ 5

6 Congratulations... Congratulations to Dr. Tammy Summerville, who was recently appointed deputy superintendent of instruction for Huntsville City Schools. Congratulations to Trey Flowers, who was recently inducted into the Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Sister Terry Green, who received the 2017 Advancement Award, Alabama State University. Congratulations to Brother Marcus McCall, who was recently named Head Football Coach at Columbia High School. Congratulations to Joshua Gilbreath, who completed the Academy of Leaders Pursuing High Academic Standards (ALPHAs) Mentoring Program. The program, held May - July, is designed to assist ninth grade males, prior to the beginning of their freshman year in high school, in their adjustment to high school, and to put into play a broader range of resources for them to utilize outside of their existing structure. Sister Clarene Teague-Johnson established the Clarene Teague-Johnson Paying it Forward Scholarship at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Foundation to benefit students exiting the university. The scholarship will be used to support students who have completed their academic requirements but who have balances on their accounts that need to be cleared before they can exit the university. Family Health & Wellness Day The Family Health & Wellness Day was held on Saturday, July 29, 2017, from 8:00-10:00 a.m. Members learned about various health concerns, illnesses that affect our community, symptoms, and ways to be vigilant in healthcare. Participants enjoyed healthy refreshments, walked one mile around the church, received blood pressure and glucose tests. It was a wonderful fellowship and a great opportunity for members to learn about health and wellness. 6

Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly. The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips (Proverbs 16:22-23). Being smart and sensible makes a good leader more persuasive and effective.
