Proverbs 22:6 Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church February 2010 Volume VII, Issue 2 Words from the Pastor Our Cultural Heritage This month we celebrate our cultural heritage. While our ministries focus this month will be the Youth, Ushers, and Greeters, we will pay even closer attention to the many blessings the Lord has bestowed upon us as a people. We will praise and give thanks to Him for the great things He has done for us in the past, present, and for what He will do in the future. From slave ships to Christian fellowship just take a look around and see what the Lord has done. Praise His Holy name! Brothers and Sisters, we are asking you to join us this month as we celebrate and give thanks to our God for His salvation and liberation in Christ Jesus. All month long we will pray, study, praise, worship and keep His word. Let s be on one accord in hope of growing to a new level of commitment and service in the kingdom work. I am excited about the possibilities! We invite you to join us on the 3 rd Sunday this month as we dress in African attire in celebration and thanksgiving to God for our African heritage. Then, on the 22 nd through the 24 th we will experience God during our Renewal Worship services. This month Dr. Tellis Chapman one of God s greatest preachers, will be our guest minister. And as always I will be teaching before the service each night. The Bible study topic this month will be Liberated Christian Living. We hope to see your face in the place! February 21 7:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. worship services All members are encouraged to wear African attire February 25 4:00 p.m. UC Child Development Center Black History Program February 26 1:30 p.m. UC Christian Academy Black History Program Stitching and Quilting Ministry Stitches of Love On February 21, 2010 the Stitching and Quilting Ministry A Stitch in Time will present an exhibit Stitches of Love From Generation to Generation. This will be a display of sewing, quilting, crochet and doll projects made by the participants. The exhibit will be in the The Underground Railroad Quilt Code Patterns Monkey Wrench - Prepare the tools you ll need for the long journey, including the mental and spiritual tools. Or (as a Ship s Wheel), the pilot is prepared to begin the transport. Wagon Wheel- Load the wagon or prepare to board the wagon to begin the escape. Bear s Paw -Take a mountain trail, out of view. Follow the path made by bear tracks; they can lead you to water and food. Crossroads -Refers to Cleveland, Ohio, a destination offering several routes to freedom. It also signifies reaching a point where a person s life will change, so one must be willing to go on. Log Cabin- A secret symbol that could be drawn on the ground indicating that a person is safe to talk to. It also advises seeking shelter Shoofly -Possibly identifies a friendly guide who is nearby and can help. Bowtie- Dress in a disguise, or put on a change of clothes. Flying Geese- Points to a direction to follow, such as where geese would fly during spring migration. Drunkard s Path -Create a zig-zag path, do not walk in a straight line, to avoid pursuers in this area. Star -Follow the North Star. Worked in conjunction with the popular song, Follow the Drinking Gourd, a reference to the Big Dipper constellation. Fellowship Hall. The exhibit will be available after both worship services until 2:30 p.m. A special feature of the exhibit will be patterns of quilts that were used by escaping slaves during the Underground Railroad. The patterns and code as told to Serena Strother Wilson. Serena Strother Wilson is the granddaughter of Nora Belle McDaniel. Grandma would say, Sit down children. It s time you girls learn to quilt and learn the Quilt Code. The Monkey Wrench turns the Wagon Wheel north, up the road toward Canada. Follow the Drunkard s Path, watch and pray. Look for the Flying Geese in the day and the North Star at night. Follow the Bear s Paw trail to the Crossroads. Shoofly says dress up; put on cotton or satin Bow Ties, Sue Bonnets, or Bandannas. Soon, you will cross over Jordan. Look for Tumbling Blocks. Now go in, you can sing and shout, Thank God, I Be Free! You can get married, exchange Rings, no more Irish Chains around your feet. You can build a Log Cabin; the women can dig and plant a Nine Patch garden. When you get hot, you can Fan. The men can go fishing in a Sailboat, and the children can play with Pinwheels. When somebody dies, weave a sweet grass Basket, put wildflowers in it, and put it on the grave. You and your children can never be sold away again. It will always be howdy and never goodbye! Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Ephesians 3:20 Marriage Enrichment Seminar February 13 th God s ideal plan for marriage is one man for one woman for one lifetime. God s pattern for marital happiness is evident when a man loves and leads his family, with children who obey and reverence their parents (Eph. 6: 1 4), with a wife who respects and supports her husband s leadership (Eph. 5:21 33). A mutually supportive attitude must characterize both husband and wife if they are to succeed in building a harmonious home. Marriage is so important in the mind of God that it was the first of three divine institutions and was patterned to illustrate Christ s love for the church. Christians should therefore do their part in contributing to the success of the family. So I give you my heart, the heart of a servant, Lord. I give you my joyfulness, my brokenness everything I am. May I grow to know and love you, and serve the ones you love. Day by day, this I pray; to give you my heart, the heart of a servant. You created me for you; you have called me by name. Your spirit s alive in me like a constant, burning flame. Your grace overwhelms me, I m abundantly blessed. For all you have done for me I am giving you my best.. 5 Marriage Enrichment Seminar, cont. All married couples are invited to come out and join Pastor and Sister Davis while they teach the principles needed to build a harmonious home and how you can contribute to the success of your marriage and family. The Marriage Enrichment Fellowship will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 in the Fellowship Hall from 8:00 a.m. 12:00 noon. Breakfast will be served. Union Chapel Women s Ministry (U.C.W.M.) Your Servant Leader, O. Wendell Davis Union Chapel Women s Ministry held their first prayer breakfast on Saturday, January 29, There was a mighty move of God s spirit in the fellowship hall as women of God came together as one sisterhood to grow in grace and seek the Lord through prayer. Many powerful intercessory prayers were offered up by anointed prayer warriors. In addition to the spiritual nourishment, there was a great breakfast prepared by the culinary ministry. The UCWM is committed to the spiritual growth, affirmation and empowerment of godly women. UCWM strives to assist women of all ages in the spiritual, physical, financial, relational and emotional aspect of their lives, and provide an opportunity to connect with other women disciples as one in the body of Christ. 6 Valentine s Day Kid s Corner Many stories about the origin of Valentine s Day have come down through the centuries. There s no definitive story, but most revolve around the imprisonment of Valentinus (St. Valentine) for his disregard of Roman laws. millions of cards and acres of heartshaped boxes filled with candy.
