2 From the Pastor s Pen Hope is an extremely high level of trust. When we trust the Lord for our salvation He becomes our hope. He is our hope for the present and the future. Our hope is in His ability to keep us. He keeps us in His perfect peace when our minds are stayed on Him. He protects us from all hurt, harm and danger. Our hope should be in no one or nothing else but Him. Our hope is in His ability to provide for us. He provides us with everything we need to sustain ourselves and do His will. We must keep in mind that at all times, God will provide. Our hope should be in His ability to meet all of our needs. Our hope is in His ability to preserve us. The Lord will always finish what He starts. By the power of His Holy Spirit, He molds and makes us what He wants us to be. Our hope is in His ability to complete in us what He started. Finally, our hope is in the promise of His return. He HOPE promised to come again and receive us unto Himself. This is our hope that when He comes, we shall be like Him and be with Him forever. Yes, brothers and sisters, our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and His righteousness. And now, Lord, what wait I for? 4 Setting Goals for Fruitful Living, II Samuel 7: In the 70s, I experienced a turning point in my walk with Christ. It started with II Samuel 7, which inspired me to follow in King David s footsteps. He spent time alone with God, offering praise and thanksgiving. He also listened as the Lord revealed truth and offered insight about the future. Because of what he learned, David was able to set goals and stay aligned with them. Desiring that kind of solitude, I spent several days alone in a camper at Georgia s Stone Mountain Park. Most of the time I remained silent, listening intently for God s voice. I asked Him to speak to me regarding my future, and He answered. Using a journal, I recorded the goals He inspired. The things He communicated so impacted my choices and so greatly blessed me that I continued the discipline every couple of month. Let s discuss how to establish aims in this manner. First, come before the throne of almighty God with a repentant heart, praise, and thanksgiving. Then, ask Him for Wisdom to Live By direction in areas such as spiritual life, career, and family. In silence, wait patiently and attentively - as you read and meditate upon God s Word, He will speak. Most often, His guidance is experienced as a prodding or conviction in the heart. When that happens, be sure to write down what you re learning so you can review it later. In order to stay on the path God intends for our life, we should plan times to stop, ask, and listen for guidance. The world throws confusing messages at us all day long, and we need to check our course frequently. These conversations with the Lord are vital for a thriving life of godly impact. ~Dr. Charles Stanley Wellness News People tend to go big for their New Year s fitness resolutions. Do a triathlon! Get in great shape! Lose 70 pounds by Valentine s Day! But big can backfire when it comes to setting goals and following through. A specific, manageable fitness plan will get you much further than vague hopes for (drumroll, please) Total Transformation. One of our favorite forms of exercise doesn t require a gym membership, an instructor or expensive equipment - just a good pair of shoes. We re talking about walking, of course. Simply start by putting one foot in front of the other, and then keep going for about a half-hour at a moderate pace, or even just 10 minutes if you re a beginner. Walking, that most basic of activities for our bipedal species, is one of the simplest ways to exercise. But simple doesn t mean ineffective. According to new research, walking can improve your heart health in a snap (translation: just 10 weeks). In the study, women who walked briskly for 150 minutes a week for 10 weeks improved heart disease risk factors, including blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) and cardiovascular fitness. Team up with a friend or neighbor and plot out a walking schedule, working your way up to 30 minutes a day, most days of the week, at a good clip. 5 Black History Month The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has selected The Crisis in Black Education as the 2017 Black History Theme. The theme for 2017 focuses on the crucial role of education in the history of African Americans. Several events are planned in celebration of the accomplishments and achievements of African Americans: February 11 The Underground Railroad: Journey to Freedom Burritt on the Mountain 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. February 15 Black History Presentation, Union Chapel Christian Academy A Legacy of Strength...A Future of Hope Main Sanctuary 8:30 a.m. February 16 The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (UAH), Black History Presentation Conference Training Center, Exhibit Hall 7:30 p.m. February The Stitching and Quilting Ministry presents the 9th Annual Celebration of African American History entitled Stitches of Love, a display of quilts, crochet and sewing projects continuing the legacy of our ancestors. An old fashioned Bed Turning will be featured at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. both days. Sunday February 19 is Heritage Sunday. Wear African attire if you desire. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Boone-Lacy Fellowship Hall Girl Scouts Troops 661 (Brownies), 664 (Juniors), 682 (Daisies) and 721 (Cadette, Senior, Ambassadors) participated in Annual MLK Day Parade on Saturday, January 14. Girl Scouts News Troop 664 (Juniors) is collecting personal hygiene items for men and women for donation to Manna House through March 31; collection bins are located in the vestibule. This service project is designed for troop members to complete their bronze award, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Congratulations to Deacon Kevin McGhaw, who was recently selected to participate in the White House Leadership Development Program, a yearlong program designed to train and develop the government s highest performers. Congratulations to Sister Sheila Erskine, who recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Capella University with a Bachelor of Science in Business, with a specialization in Management and Leadership. Congratulations to Brother Everett Berger who participated in the inaugural parade for President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., on Friday, January 20. Brother Berger, a freshman cymbal player with Talladega College marching band, is a 2014 graduate of Union Chapel Christian Academy. Congratulations to Sister Rosalynne Strickland, who is featured in the February issue of the Marie Claire magazine article Today s Hidden Figures: Meet the Black Women Working at NASA. In celebration of the release of the movie Hidden Figures Marie Claire spoke with six (6) African-American women working at NASA Sister Rosalynne Strickland, pictured at right, with today who oversee everything from rocket sys- Katherine Moore, the daughter of Katherine G. Johnson (NASA Physicist and Mathematician) tem designs to vacuum chambers, to space-launch software. They are a reminder that today s black female leaders aren t hidden. They re at the forefront of what makes NASA great. Sister Strickland is an engineer at Marshall Space Flight Center. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. ~Psalm 1:1-3~ 6

L.A.B.S. is designed to equip students with the basic skills and knowledge that are essential to join the future science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce. The Institute s state-of-the-art facilities along with access on our biotech campus to some of the most advanced genetics and genomics research will help you become ready to take advantage of future lab opportunities. The program is a two-year commitment. Participants who are selected this year will engage, grow and learn together over four semesters, concluding the program in Spring Students will meet in the educational labs at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. for six weeks each semester. Applications for L.A.B.S. open in December and close February 17 and include a visit to each applicant s school after the deadline in February. A selection committee will choose which students will be invited to participate in the program, and students will be notified of their selection before the end of the school year. The program includes a parent orientation the week before the first session in September For additional information visit edoutreach@hudsonalpha.org. A good leader is modest, not arrogant. We ve all encountered the know-it-all leader, the submit-or-else type of leader. But Proverbs 16:5 says, Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.
