In addition the sacrament is celebrated at church on the first Saturday of the month after evening Mass and on the third Sunday of the month after 8:00 Mass. It may be repeated as needed. A PLEDGE TO PARISH LIFE My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be.

THIS WEEKEND FATHER JAMES KING ORI, from Kenya will make an appeal in our parish for the Consolata Missionaries. This religious community was founded by Blessed Joseph Allamano (Turin, Italy), taking its name from the shrine of Our Lady of Consolation and the devotion and love that he had for Our Blessed Mother. They are a religious society for foreign missions, composed of priests, brothers, and sisters who devote their lives to the evangelization of people everywhere, the dream of Blessed Joseph. Working in 21 countries around the world, they serve the spiritual and temporal needs of many people in Africa, South and North America, and several European countries. Overall they have 224 Mission Centers with each Center caring for up to 100 villages. I have invited Father King to our parish as part of our annual Archdiocesan Missionary Plan of Cooperation an initiative by which the Church of St. Louis offers spiritual and material support for the foreign missions. Please warmly and generously welcome Father King. BEGINNING THIS WEEKEND you will find in the back of church a display of the architectural drawings that have been proposed for the renovation of our church and community center. You will also find information concerning the benefits and probable costs of these proposals. In March a large group of parish leaders agreed that the proposed designs would Provide a space conducive to accessible, inclusive, full, and active participation in worship Eliminate physical and symbolic barriers and provide better placement for the ministries of lectors, servers, musicians, gift bearers and Eucharistic ministers Strengthen the presence of our parish and our commitment to outreach in the community Secure viability and create a since of pride in ownership for all parishioners This display will be available for viewing through early September. I would encourage everyone to spend some time reviewing it. Think and pray about the proposals and our need for such improvements. Talk with other parish members. Most importantly talk with parish leaders about what you think and why. You can find a complete list of who to contact in the back of church. In late September this group will meet again to decide what we want to do the whole project, part of the project, nothing at all. Only then will we begin to discuss how we will do it (including the question of funding what we want to do) and when we will begin. Thanks to all who participated in the General Parish Assemblies last month. I think that they we well attended and helpful to our parish leaders. SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR PARISH FESTIVAL & HOMECOMING this year Saturday, September 10th. Planning is well underway for a celebration that will be one of our best. Make sure that you let your friends and family know now. Encourage them to join us for the day or part of the day. Mass and supper, or an evening together, could be a wonderful way of celebrating the life of our parish and our place in the community. Follow the bulletin for more information. Please seriously consider volunteering to help even if just for an hour or two. COMING TOGETHER IN CHRIST we pray for and support for the work of the Church across the Archdiocese. If you are still considering a gift or pledge, this month you will receive a final Appeal letter from the Archbishop. Your prayers and gifts help to make the love of Jesus very real for those in need. 6 Northeast County Senior Ministry is now partnering with local church youth to offer a Lawn Mowing Service, where we will match youth to homeowners in need of grass cutting. To cover the cost of gas and transportation, our mowers are asking for $10 to $15 depending on the size of the yard. We hope this service will help senior homeowners maintain their yards and get youth a chance to meet others in their community as well as some meaningful work to do. Any interested homeowners or youth should contact Brion Abel at or brion.abel@sgsmnetwork.org. Northeast County Senior Ministry Murder Mystery Dinner Postponed to August 6, 2011 The Northeast County Senior Ministry is giving you additional time to pack your bags for the Captain s Reception, rescheduled from Saturday, June 18 to Saturday, August 6, The event will be held at St. Ferdinand Gymnasium (1765 Charbonier, Florissant) at 5 p.m. with a catered dinner and fun for the entire family. The Exercises also teach a fruitful method of daily contemplative prayer. You can make the Spiritual Exercises over nine months of weekly meetings with a trained spiritual director and a daily hour of prayer. Throughout the Saint Louis area, the Bridges Foundation makes the Exercises available every year. The next information evening about the program is Wednesday, July 27, 7:00 to 9:00pm, at the Saint Charles Lwanga Center, 4746 Carter Avenue, Other information sessions in July and August will be in Saint Peters, Webster Groves, Saint Charles, South Saint Louis County, and at Saint Louis University. 7 Key to Trimming Bad Fat A new study recently released that increasing daily soluble fiber intake may help you to lose dangerous, visceral fat. Visceral fat produces hormones and other substances linked to a host of chronic diseases. We have essentially two kinds of fat; subcutaneous fat, found just under the skin and visceral fat, located deep in the belly that wraps around a persons vital organs. Researchers from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have found ways to hone in on this deep belly fat. That can be done by getting moderate amounts of regular exercise and eating more soluble fiber from vegetables, fruits and beans. High rates of visceral fat have been associated with high blood pressure, diabetes and fatty liver disease. Making a few simple changes in diet and exercise can have a big health impact. What is the difference between soluble fiber and insoluble fiber? Both fibers are important for health, digestion and preventing diseases, but they have different actions and soluble fiber is more important when it comes to visceral fat. Soluble Fiber This attracts water and turns to gel during digestion which then slows digestion. Soluble fiber is found in oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas, and some fruits and vegetables. Soluble fiber may help lower cholesterol, which may help prevent heart disease. Insoluble Fiber -This is found in foods such as wheat bran, vegetables and whole grains. This adds bulk to the stool and appears to help food pass more quickly through the stomach and intestines. All fiber is important, increasing soluble fiber is the thing to do when you are battling belly fat. Researchers know that increasing soluble fiber in your diet reduces visceral fat, they just don t know how it works, and believe more research is needed to study the relationship between soluble fiber and these deep, belly fat deposits. Our hope is in you, O Lord. Peace, Buffy Modde, Parish HNOJ History of the Roman Missal Paul Turner The Roman Missal is the official book of texts for the Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. The first book to bear the title came out in After the Second Vatican Council, the Scripture readings were removed from the missal and bound in separate lectionaries. The rest was called the sacramentary in English, but its Latin title has always been Missale Romanum. The heart of the Roman Missal is the Order of Mass, the words and rubrics (instructions) that pertain to every Mass, from the song at the beginning to the dismissal at the end. Most of the book contains the priest s prayers that change from one Mass to the next: the collect (opening prayer), the prayer over the offerings, and the postcommunion prayer. The Roman Missal opens with a general instruction explaining how and why the Mass should go the way it does. It includes a number of appendices, including prayer the priest may say privately before and after Mass. In 1570 the Missal of Pius V or the Tridentine Missal was published. In 1970 the first edition of the Roman Missal was published. Whenever a new l iturgical book is published, there is a trial period of a few years during which words are tested out and refined. Therefore, in 1971 there was an amended version, and in then second edition published in 1975, and now a third edition from The 2001 edition is the base of her new Roman Missal. The 2001 instruction, Liturgiam Authenticam, mandated the new translation: the original text, insofar as addition in terms content, and without paraphrases or glosses. Any adaptation to the Characteristics or the nature of the various vernacular language is to be sober and discreet. we now move from a sense or dynamic equivalences translation to a direct formal equivalence translation. For additional information: Please refer to the Office of Sacred Worship website at archstl.org/worship and click on the tab Roman Missal, Third Edition, on the left-hand side of the page. And be sure to read the St. Louis Review and check it out online at for more on the new Roman Missal.

LOUIS FOOD PANTRY ALERT YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT for the food distribution programs of our parish and our archdiocese are greatly appreciated. These programs reach the most vulnerable people in our community. Earlier this month Fr. Mike received an URGENT ALERT from Catholic Charities that Missouri s Food Pantry Tax Credit program will expire on August 28th. Pantries across Missouri are worried about the loss of donations of food and money. Through this program donors are able to claim half of the value of their donation up to $2,500 a year as credit against their state income tax bill. Through this program the state offers $2 million a year to encourage donations of food and money. From what Fr Mike has learned this incentive program got lost in all the squabbling over the $522 million worth of tax credits handed out by the state last year. The Food Pantry Tax Credit will not be restored without a special session of the legislature this summer which does not seem likely. This program has grown significantly over the past 4 years with 99% of the donors being individual tax payers, claiming credits on average amounting to $450. I would encourage your donations by August 28th to Catholic Charities of St. Louis in support of their food programs. After this date Missouri tax payers will not longer be able to take advantage of this tax credit program.
