Most of us know how our initial enthusiasms can evaporate. And yet, for the past ten years, we have challenged ourselves to be disciples. Everyone has been invited, each year, to find a way to contribute to the life and welfare of our parish. All are asked to financially support the programs, services, and costs for the operation of our parish facilities. Many have responded. And we now again invite all to reflect on the needs of our parish and on the importance of our Church in this community. Our members make our mission real! This weekend I invite you to review and talk about the financial reports on the opposite page. These charts show you how necessary our Parish Savings have been and continue to be for the operation of our parish. They also give a picture of our Parish Income & Expenses and the challenge of striving for a balanced budget. We are making progress. This year we have challenged ourselves to cover 70% of our budgeted expenses with our Sunday Offerings. Last year we fell only 1% short of our 60% goal! We need to pay our Pastoral Team and Support Staff a living wage, honoring their outstanding commitment to the needs of our parish members. Everyone of these front line people have served our parish faithfully over the last 10 years! As we continue to reflect on our stewardship commitment, keep this in mind. Over the past few years a number of our best supporting members have aged to the point where they are no longer able to contribute to our parish. This also impacts the pool of volunteers for our ministries and outreach programs for those needing our help. PARISH HOMECOMING Join me in giving thanks to all who contributed to the success of our annual Homecoming. Under the leadership of John & Marialice Duhadway our Homecoming Team again successfully sponsored a day for us to gather for fun, food, and the enjoyment of each other s good company. We are still tabulating the expenses and soon will have a final report on the success of this parish fundraising event. CATHOLIC FAMILY MAGAZINE The October issue is completely devoted to profiling all the Catholic High Schools in our Archdiocese. CFM is free for the taking! If someone in your family or neighborhood is interested in attending a Catholic high school, please take one home, look over all the opportunities available, and pass it on to someone else with junior or senior high school age children. Gospel Words In the time and place of Jesus and the early Church words often had different meaning than they do for us: Love ( Attachment ) Jesus looked at the young man in today s Gospel and loved him, that is, would like him to join the company of his disciples. Sell what you have In the Mediterranean world one s most precious possessions were family, home, and land. Disciples are asked to break all blood ties on the promise of treasure in heaven, fellowship in a new community. Rich ( Greedy ) In the ancient world possessions were not the problem, but a person s unwillingness to share. Though a rich person may want for nothing, they have no advantage when it comes to God.

4 CAR MAINTENANCE October is Car Care Month, and AAA auto experts list 5 examples of recommended maintenance for your vehicle. Keeping your vehicle s maintenance updated one more chore on your to do list, however over time, not following maintenance directives can lead to costly problems for vehicle owners. TIRE PRESSURE: Over-inflated tires ride roughly and suffer premature wear, while under-inflated tires decrease fuel economy and can overheat and fail at highway speeds. Check the tire pressures (including the spare) once a month when the tires are cold. Follow inflation pressure recommendations on the vehicle s door jamb or under the trunk s lid, as well as in your owner s manual, but not on the tire sidewall. ENGINE AIR FILTER: This filter prevents dust and dirt from entering the engine. A clogged air filter can reduce engine performance and fuel economy. Check the filter every 6 months or 7,500 miles. Hold it up to a 60 watt light bulb, if you can see light through the filter, time to replace it. BATTERY CABLES/CLAMPS/TERMINALS: If these components become corroded or loose, your car won t have the power it needs to start the engine and operate other systems. Inspect the battery cables, clamps, and connections at each oil change. Have your repair shop clean and tighten as necessary. WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID: A dirty windshield can compromise your vision of the road. Check the fluid reservoir monthly. ENGINE OIL: Without an adequate supple of clean oil, your vehicle s engine will wear more rapidly and could even seize and be destroyed. Change the engine oil and filter at the specified intervals. Always use the weight of oil recommended by the vehicle s manufacturer. AAA Midwest Traveler Stewardship of Treasure Your Gifts of Support for Our Parish Mission Report on Parish Collections Thank you for supporting our parish services and programs as well as the operation and maintenance of our facilities. 5 NORTHEAST DEANERY CHILDREN S CHOIR Auditions for new members will take place on Tuesday, October 13 beginning at 4:00 pm. You will be asked to match pitches and sing a hymn of your choosing from the Music Issue or Breaking Bread hymnbook. The Choir sings for Mass once a month and travels to the Churches of the Deanery who have participating children. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 4:30 pm 6:00 pm. For more information and/or to schedule an audition, please contact Mrs. Theresa McWilliams by phone (314) or by tmacwms@sbcglobal.net COMMUNION OF SAINTS DEVOTION The month of November has traditionally been a time when the Church celebrated the Communion of Saints, prays for those who have died, and prepares to welcome the one St. Francis called Sister Death. In keeping with this tradition, we will once again be creating only some recognized saints of the Church but our own loved ones who have gone before us. We are inviting families to share with us a photograph (in a frame if possible) of loved ones who have died. We will display these in our devotional area along with the relics of saints. In order to design the devotional space, we ask that all photographs be turned into the Parish Office or brought to the sacristy in the church by October 25th. FISH FRY NEEDS 1. We are in need of bacon grease for the potato salad. 2 We are also looking for coolers, if anyone has coolers that they don't need please drop off at the Community center or the parish office. The next Fish Fry will be November 13th. THE REMARKABLE SALESMAN Christopher Columbus was the world s most remarkable salesman. He started out not knowing where he was going. When he arrived, he didn t know where he was. And when he returned, he didn t know where he had been. And he did it all on a big cash advance and he received a repeat order. Anonymous ATTENTION LADIES The Ladies Guild meeting will be Monday October 12th at 2:00pm. Our guest speaker will be Dave Owens from the Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Department. Please come and learn about safety in our neighborhood. Refreshments will be served. All ladies are welcome. Make note of the time change! Dear Parishioners, I can hardly believe that in one week our First Quarter of school will be ending! As our children continue to grow in faith and knowledge we are forever grateful to you, our parishioners for your continued support of Christ Light of the Nations Catholic School. We invite you to celebrate the Holy Mass with us on Wednesday mornings at 8:00 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. I believe that it is so important for our children to see you as role models and see how you love to celebrate the Eucharist! Starting on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7, we are praying a decade of the Rosary each day for you and all who support our school. We appreciate you so much and we pray that Christ Our Light may shower you with many blessings through the intercession of his Holy Mother, Our Lady of the Rosary.
