Members of a vibrant parish find ways of being engaged in parish life that provide them with opportunities for sharing their gifts with other parish members or through their parish with the wider community. They find sharing their gifts life-giving, even when it may mean going the extra mile. Everyone has something to give! What is your gift? You will read in today s bulletin that we are now in the process of looking for GIFTED PEOPLE to serve on our School Board. You may be one of these gifted people. You may have one or several of the gifts we need for our Board as we continue to work to insure the strength and excellence of our school for many years to come. Our school is jointly sponsored with Our Lady of the Rosary Parish with whom we have been planning for a strong and secure future for the past three years. This year our work has attracted $346,000 of Archdiocesan support for operations and tuition assistance. Our school s partnership with the Archdiocese can only grow stronger as we continue to increase our Board s capability for the responsibility it has for our school. Take some time to review the gifts our School Board needs in order to be successful. YOUR GIFTS or those of someone you know are needed for our school s continuing excellence. Our school is a ministry of our parish. We intend that through our school students and their families, faculty and administration, will grow in faith and achieve their fullest human potential.

Come and rediscover a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ and with the Church. Deepen your trust in God and your confidence about sharing your faith with others by word and deed. The month of November has traditionally been a time when the Church celebrated the Communion of Saints, prays for those who have died, and prepares to welcome the one St. Francis called Sister Death. In keeping with this tradition, we will once again be creating Communion of Saints devotional areas, on which we will honor, not only some recognized saints of the Church but our own loved ones who have gone before us. We are inviting families to share with us a photograph (in a frame if possible) of loved ones who have died. We will display these in our devotional area along with the relics of saints. In order to design the devotional space, we ask that all photographs be turned into the Parish Office or brought to the sacristy in the church by October 27th. All photos will be returned in December. On Sunday, November 10, the ONLY 10:30 Mass in this neighborhood will be at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Bellefontaine Road celebrating the sacrament of confirmation for our eighth-graders. Please join us. At Holy Name of Jesus, there will be only 4:00 pm mass on November 9 8:00 am mass on November 10.

7 HALLOWEEN SAFETY Halloween is just around the corner. It is a fun time for kids of all ages, but it is also an important time to be extra vigilant for possible safety hazards. Halloween is the most dangerous night of the year for child pedestrians. Here are some tips to help keep it safe COSTUMES; Choose a costume, wig, and accessories that are made of flame retardant material. Costumes should be short enough so they don t trip or fall. Pin a slip of paper with the child s name, address, and phone number inside a pocket. Add some reflective tape to the costume of candy bag. Consider nontoxic and hypoallergenic make up and decorative, properly fitting hats. Wands, swords, and other props should be made of a flexible material. TRICK-OR-TREAT SAFETY TIPS. Make sure an adult will be supervising the outing for children under age 12. Stick to the sidewalks, well-lit streets and houses in familiar neighborhoods. Carry a flashlight or light stick to see and be seen. Chaperones should be paying attention to possible real-life boogiemen. CANDY SAFETY TIPS: Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before anything is eaten. Throw out candy or treats that are homemade or appear to have been tampered with. For parents of young children, remove any choking hazards like gum, hard candies, or small toys. When in doubt, throw it out! Don t forget to protect your pets during the haunting hours. They may get frightened by familiar folks with strange outfits on. Also keep them away from the candy! BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN, HAPPY HAUNTING! IMPORTANT HOSPITAL NEWS Hospitals, because they are going paperless, are no longer listing the parishes of patients. 10 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure! James Field, Copyright J. S.
