I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. 3 IHS Highlights of Life in Our Community Our Parish Life Good for You - Good for Others Details in your bulletin or Parish Directory. Being involved insures the vitality of our parish. Sunday, May 11th The Fourth Sunday of Easter Annual Catholic Appeal Weekend Mother s Day Weekend ( No Coffee & Donuts or Blood Pressure Screening ) Monday, May 12th Ladies Guild Meeting Tuesday, May 13th Men s Club Meeting Wednesday, May 14th Exercise Class Parish Quilting Group Room At The Inn Program Young At Heart Health and Wellness Committee Meeting Friday, May 16th Girl Scout Troop Meeting Celebrating the Ministry of Leadership in Our Church We Are a People Full of Hope THE GOSPEL OF JOHN today contrasts the honorable or noble shepherd with the thief, bandit, and stranger. For disciples of Jesus this was in fact a strange and surprising way of imagining his mission and ministry. In the time and place of Jesus an honorable shepherd was a contradiction in terms. All shepherds were viewed as thieves and as men who exposed their women to shame by leaving them uncared for while they pastured the sheep. John now carefully spells out the characteristics of an honorable shepherd. He enters by the door instead of sneaking in some other way. He is recognized by the gatekeeper who is trusted to know all the shepherds. And, unlike others he knows that walking in front of not behind the flock is the stronger position from which to guide and defend them. On this Sunday of Easter our faith tradition commonly looks beyond the sheep imagery to the question of leadership in the Christian community. These verses should encourage reflection and healthy discussion as we ask ourselves, Are contemporary leaders noble guides or more like thieves, bandits, and strangers? Consult not your fears, but your hopes and dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do. Together with pastors they are called to be honorable and noble leaders. The renewal undertaken by the 2nd Vatican Council urges to reclaim these values: That pastors are strongly encouraged to use councils as effective means of consultation with the laity and of participation of God s people in decision making that affects their well-being. That the laity have the right and the responsibility to participate in the governance of the Church by means of such lay advisory councils. I am most grateful for the members of our parish community and local Church who willingly and generously serve as parish leaders on behalf of the work of Christ in this part of North County. They bring personal experience and much needed expertise to the process of identifying the needs of our community and making decisions concerning the ministries, programs, and organization of our parish life and work. Please pray often for those who serve as parish leaders on our Parish Pastoral Council Parish Finance Committee Parish Liturgy Committee Christ Light of the Nations School Board And even more as we look to the future pray for yourself! God may be calling you to become a parish leader or to assist in some way with the work of these leadership groups. Never be too quick or certain about saying No! to such an invitation. Your gifts and willingness to grow in faith are part of the mystery of the Church. Your baptism made you an essential member of the Body of Christ the Sacrament of God s for all the world.

5 Fourth Sunday of Easter May 11, 2014 Our Goals for the Appeal This Year Pray God will help us to believe in the importance of what we are doing. We have THREE GOALS for our parish this year: To raise $54,083 in pledges and gifts To increase the level of participation in our parish If you have given or pledged before, we encourage you to recommit yourself to this year s Appeal. If you have never made a pledge or gift, we encourage you to do so this year. We have a goal of 43 new donors. To reach and surpass our goal by reminding all donors that you can more easily increase your gift by pledging your payments over several months or through the entire year. Parish Progress Report as of April 28th $3, % of Goal for New Donors 0 % of Goal for Cards Returned 1.3 % Level of Participation 3 Donors Increased Contributions 6 Donors Maintained 2013 Giving Level 0 Donors Decreased Contributions How Our Parish Benefits Pray others will know God s love is more powerful than any painful circumstance or difficulty in life. Our Appeal is rooted in our CATHOLIC TRADITION of mutual support and generosity to those in need. Last year we received a $200,000 grant for the operation of our school. Our students also participated in a REAP Retreat and the Right Start student and parent classes in human sexuality education; and engaged couples benefited from programs of the Office of Laity and Family Life. All funded through the ACA. Activities In Our Parish Pray God will help each of us to know what we can give and give us the will to be generous. If you would like to make your pledge by phone, please contact Ray or Karin Gawedzinski at Whatever you do for one of these least of mine, you do for me. 6 Please join us in CELEBRATING Fr. Doyle s 49 years of service as a priest Saturday, May 17th 5pm Mass at St. Michael the Archangel Church 7622 Sutherland Ave St. Louis, MO Followed by a reception in the gym Fr. Doyle is retiring in June, 2014 A very Blessed Mothers Day to all our Mothers, Grandmothers and Great- Grandmothers! Hope you have a very relaxing day with family and friends! HUGS A mom s hug lasts long after she lets go. Anonymous PLEASE NOTE Due to Fr. Mike s 40th Anniversary celebration on next Sunday, May 18th there will only be ONE Mass that day at 10:00am. We encourage everyone to join us as we celebrate his 40 years as an Archdiocesan priest. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Every rectory office has received a panicked phone call from a person who has been invited to serve as a godparent, or from someone newly engaged, who suddenly needs to get confirmed. While the lack of confirmation is not an obstacle for marriage, it is for godparenting. Many are surprised that the Church seems to be looking for a kind of sacramental seal on one s baptism before the door opens fully to this ministry. Yet if you think about it, would you want someone to guide you to a place that he or she had not yet been? A godparent has to be someone who has been there and knows the way. Although signet rings and wax seals have passed from use, our society depends on seals of approval ranging from certificates of quality to the familiar safety seals on medicines and foods. While Eucharist is the seal of the sacrament of baptism, there is a sense in which one s Christian initiation is also incomplete without confirmation. Have you been confirmed? Perhaps it s time to inquire now, before you have to make that dreaded phone call! A Memorial Day Program Sponsored by the Missouri Veteran s Home, The City of Bellefontaine Neighbors and Fort Bellefontaine Memorial American Legion Post 335 will be held on the grounds of the Missouri Veteran s Home, Lewis & Clark Blvd., on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th at 10:00am. We encourage you to join us for this moving event. Also, there will not be anointing of the sick This week.

7 IMPORTANT HOSPITAL NEWS Sometimes, the demands of a hectic lifestyle are just too much to handle. We often say, My brain can t hold anymore! Even though society moves much faster than ever, the human brain cannot keep up. Scientists have demonstrated that people can keep only three or four things in our working memory, or conscious mind at once. What is CONCENTRATION? Researchers refer to concentration as executive function skills. The three key components of executive function are the ability to: *Focus on information *Manage tasks *Prioritize goals Doing what we can to avoid information overload helps our concentration skills stay sharp. Of course, keeping thing simple isn t always an option. But help is here. New studies show that exercise, meditation and cognitive training can improve your BRAIN POWER. Let s take a closer look at these. 1. Exercise For years we ve known about the feelgood rush of endorphins following exercise. Exercise increases mental performance and concentration by challenging the brain. It does what we want it to do, thereby prioritizing multiple tasks. So, go for a walk, around the block or at the mall. If you swim, join an aquatics class. You can also join us on Monday mornings for a low impact and range of motion exercise class. 2. Meditation According to studies, meditation improves focus by allowing the brain s orienting system, the part of the brain associated with thinking, planning and movement, to work more efficiently. There are many things ways of meditating. Sitting in a quiet room of your home, away from all noise. Reading prayers and thinking about what the words mean and how they fit into your life. Spending an hour with our Lord and talking to Him in prayer. 3. Cognitive Training This is using specific tasks to measure and improve our mental performance. When we challenge ourselves with complicated activities, our brain creates new connections as we learn new things. Doing puzzles such as Sudoku or brain teasers. Listening to classical music, not just once, but over and over so your mind becomes familiar and you can recognize the tune after a few notes. The bottom line: If you ve ever had the feeling that you can t focus on even one more task, project, or person, you are not alone. But, you are also not without options. Peace in Christ, Buffy Modde RN, BSN Parish Nurse Parishnurse.honj@sbcblobal.net Hospitals, because they are going paperless, are no longer listing the parishes of patients.
