3 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 IHS Highlights of Life in Our Community Our Parish Life Good for You - Good for Others Details in your bulletin or Parish Directory. Once preparing a class for the Sacrament of Confirmation I learned from the student s textbook the origin of the word enthusiasm. Take a moment right now to think about this word. Try to remember the experience of enthusiasm in your own life. What was going on? What other feelings or thoughts where you having? What caused your enthusiasm? What effect did it have on you after the experience? What s it like to see it in others? Now look below to see where the word comes from. When the Gospel speaks about guarding against all greed it s not asking us to dispossess ourselves of everything we own. Rather, it s defining greed as being possessed by our possessions. Greed tempts us to direct all our decisions in life to protecting what we have. Greed turns us from what really matters to us and to God. Revisit the exercise above. Chances are that much of what really matters in your life and around you came to mind as you reflected on your experience of a single word. We cannot grow into the fullness of life if we re glued to the things we have and love. We cannot grow in our relationship with God if we re self-occupied. We cannot grow in our care for others if we are not rich in what matters most: love, compassion, mercy, trust, kindness, forgiveness, fidelity. These choices matter most to God and bring us our inheritance now and forever. ENTHUSIASM IS THE MARK OF A MISSIONARY CHURCH. It s the reason why priests, religious, and laity from St. Louis have been serving in Bolivia since And, it s the result of our being there! We ve become a better Church by dramatically looking to the needs of others and by faithfully committing ourselves to being with them. Please pray for our missions this week and be as generous as you can in supporting them. Also, please welcome next week Father Peter Premarini. Father Peter is a Comboni Missionary who will be with us as a part of the Archdiocesan Missionary Plan of Cooperation a national effort of our Church to support the foreign missions. He will be speaking about the work of his community and will also ask for our prayer and support. As I begin my vacation please graciously welcome Father Peter with enthusiasm. COMING SPECIAL EVENTS Parish Women s Retreats Monday - Thursday, September 9th - 12 th Monday - Thursday, October 7th - 10 th White House Retreat Center, South St. Louis County Parish Men s Retreat Thursday Sunday, September 19 th 22 nd Joint Retreat with Men of Our Lady of the Rosary White House Retreat Center, South St. Louis County SAVE THE DATE Annual Fall Festival & Homecoming Saturday, September 28th Redeeming A Word The word enthusiasm was built out of three different Greek words and means to be possessed by God. The early Church understood that this first took place at baptism and that it was the responsibility of the community to live enthusiastically in order to encourage each other and many others to give their lives completely to God. Practicing Faith and Growing in Faith Parish Evangelization Teams THERE IS MORE INFORMATION in today s bulletin about setting up Evangelization Teams in our parish beginning this fall. Our goal is to have 10 to 12 teams (3 persons per team) ready to begin this ministry by early November. Team members will have preparation and on-going support. By focusing on hospitality team members will grow in faith while sharing our faith with many who need to know the love of God in their lives. Get the details and let Father Mike know you re interested by the end of August.

6 Eightteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 PRAYER VIGIL for NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT and Commemorating the 68 ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF HIROSHIMA AUGUST 6, :00 pm HOLY NAME OF JESUS CATHOLIC CHURCH Ashbrook Drive, St. Louis, MO ALL ARE WELCOME! Nuclear war will not mean the death of a hundred million people. Or even a thousand million. It will mean the extinction of four thousand million: the end of life as we know it on our planet earth. Rajiv Gandhi The consequence of {the failure of deterrence} invokes death on a scale rivaling the power of the creator, poisoning the earth, deforming its inhabitants for generation upon generation. General Lee Butler It is not a question of whether, but of where and when weapons of mass destruction will be used. William Perry Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in a final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. Dwight D. Eisenhower

7 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 REDUCE BLOOD SUGAR Another Life s Simple 7 to decrease your risk for heart disease is to reduce your blood sugar. Diabetes, a serious condition that occurs when the pancreas makes little or no insulin. Without insulin, the body is unable to take the glucose (blood sugar) it gets from food into cells to fuel the body. There are two (2) types of diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin Dependent Diabetes) and Type 2 Diabetes (Adult Onset Diabetes). Type one typically develops in adolescents and young adults, while type 2 can develop any where from young adult to seniors. Diabetes, regardless of the type, can quadruple your risk for heart disease or stroke. So keeping blood sugar levels under control is crucial to preventing medical problems involving the heart and kidneys. If left untreated, diabetes can also cause blindness and nerve disease, among other health complications. You can minimize the impact of diabetes on your body, and even prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, by eating right, controlling your weight, exercising and taking medication prescribed by your doctor for diabetes. In some instances, lifestyle changes like eating right, exercising and weight management, can reduce the need for medications, but only under your doctors approval. PARISH EVANGELIZATION TEAMS Father, keep us attentive to the needs of all that we may faithfully go forward with them along the way of your Kingdom. Eucharistic Prayer for Various Needs III When people know they re welcome here, they know someone cares, that God can be trusted, that our parish is a community and a place where anyone can find God. Our neighbors turn to God everyday with they needs. Some have no church or practice of religion, some have given up on religion, and some are growing more religious. All who turn to God though whether they know it or not are men and women of faith. We are blessed that they are with us, to be the answer to their prayers, the sacrament of Christ s love. As a parish this is what we re all about practicing faith and growing in faith. Evangelization Teams focus on hospitality to those who visit our parish or receive parish services. 9 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 July 26, 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The theme for this year s collection for the Latin America Apostolate is: Missionaries of Faith in the Year of Faith. On August 4, 2013, as our annual collection for the Latin America Apostolate is taking place in all our parishes, I will be in La Paz, Bolivia. The purpose of my visit is to help dedicate a new chapel in Las Lomas. This is one of 14 neighborhoods in Maria Reina Mary Queen Parish. This parish has 70,000 people who live on steep mountainsides over 13,000 feet above sea level, in the highest capital city in the world. Despite efforts of the parishioners to raise funds for the chapel construction by selling food they have prepared, this chapel would not have been completed without support of the faithful of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The St. Louis Priests who serve in Bolivia have among their pastoral priorities the proclamation of the Gospel message and the celebration of the sacraments. Other key priorities are: training of native Bolivians as diocesan priests, as well as the formation of missionary disciples among the laity who serve as catechists in religious education for children and adults. Teams of missionary disciples trained at Maria Reina Parish visit door to door to evangelize residents in the parish. The parish health clinic treats 5,000 patients each year, providing medical and dental care, along with food distribution to those at risk of malnutrition. Our Priest Missionaries in Bolivia also take turns in celebrating sacraments in a rural parish among the Aymara people, one of the indigenous peoples of Bolivia. Last July I visited Santiago (St. James) parish and concelebrated Mass with Bishop Toribio Ticona Porco, now Bishop Emeritus of Corocoro. Because there is no resident Priest in Calamarca, the 30 villages in the parish territory have access to Mass only 3 or 4 times each year. Bishop Morgan Casey, now Bishop Emeritus of the Vicariate of the Pando, ordained his successor Bishop Eugenio Coter on April 24, Bishop Casey is assisting the new Bishop in these months of transition and will return to the Archdiocese of St. Louis in his retirement. Our congratulations and thanks are due to Bishop Casey for 48 years of missionary service in Bolivia, and for nearly the last 30 years as a Bishop. During this Year of Faith, I thank our St. Louis Priests and Bishop Casey for being Missionaries of Faith in the Latin America Apostolate. Our Missionaries in Bolivia enable us to fulfill Jesus missionary mandate to Go make disciples of all the nations. (Mt 28:19) Without our support for the Latin America Apostolate, none of this missionary work would be possible. Please be generous in the collection on August 4, Asking God to bless you and your families, in this Year of Faith, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

10 Eightteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Patriarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the ministry of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, But we ve always done it this way, you are on very thin ice indeed!
