4 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the United States today, numerous Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests past age 70 benefit from the Retirement Fund for Religious collection. Donations to this special collection provide funding that helps religious communities care for senior members and plan for long-term retirement needs. On the weekend of November 4, all parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Louis will take up the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an opportunity for you to acknowledge the thousands of senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests for their faithful service. Whether or not we realize it, we are all beneficiaries of the tremendous contributions these women and men have made to the Church in the United States. Through hard work, prayer, and sacrifice, they built Catholic schools and hospitals, initiated programs to promote social justice, and ministered to the neediest among us. Today, many religious communities struggle to care for their elderly members. Elder sisters, brothers, and religious order priests dedicated their lives to service and prayer, and some lack adequate retirement savings. Increasing health-care costs and decreased income make it difficult to provide necessary medical care, costly medications and basic services. Please consider making a financial gift to assist with the care of our senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Many thanks for considering this request. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis ST. VINENT DE PAUL This weekend at all Masses someone will be speaking about the St. Vincent DePaul Society in our parish. Their purposes to inform parishioners of the work they do in our parish and community. Also representatives will be in the vestibule to answer any questions you may have. 8 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core activities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to traditions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full voting members of their communities. The lifetime appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in chapter at the death or resignation of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popular election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in chapter by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. FOOD PANTRY PLEASE do not place perishable items in the Food Pantry Bins in the vestibules of church. These bins are not cleared out on a day to day basis, therefore we have experienced some spoiled and rotten food. Our Food Pantry distributed food on the second Saturday of the month only. We accept all canned goods, boxed dinners, canned meats etc. We appreciate your generosity and thank you for your support! Trinity Catholic has it's largest 9th grade class in 9 years! Our growth is continuing---we are in need of a full-time math teacher, science teacher, learning consultant and full-time sub who can teach English and Media. A Bachelors degree is required. Please send a letter of interest and resume to Kristen Shipp, Principal at kshipp@ trinitycatholichighschool.org. Thanks so much for supporting Catholic Education in North County! FISH FRY NOVEMBER 9th 3:30 6:30PM Volunteers are needed to peel potatoes early Friday morning, and don t forget to bake your cakes and pies for dessert!
