3 SUNDAY SECOND Meet & Greet (9:30-9:55 a.m.) Classes for all ages (10:00-10:45 a.m.) Nurseries (Infant, Toddler, 2's and 3's Rooms, near Fellowship Hall) Nursery Coordinator: Ruth Robertson The Nursery is open and available for infants and toddlers during both morning worship services and Sunday school. During the Sunday school hour, volunteer teachers lead toddlers and the 2's and 3's in a special age-appropriate class. Nursery staff and volunteers are under the nursery coordinator's supervision. During Worship Children, Worship, and Wonder (CWW) (Pre-K-1st Grade, Third Floor) Volunteer Coordinator: Alice Light During the Sunday school year, children ages pre-k through first grade enjoy their own special time of worship and wonder at CWW. Following The Children's Time during the 11:00 a.m. worship, children are excused to the CWW worship space on the third floor. They learn the stories of our faith and worship God in a setting and style geared toward their needs and stages of development. Biblical stories are told in the context of a worship experience that includes singing, response time, and "the feast." We hope this will nurture their innate sense of wonder, as they develop a sense of awe and reverence for worship. For more information, contact Alice Light (alicelight.va@gmail.com). For Children Preschool (4-year-old Sunday School, near Fellowship Hall) Children will enjoy learning about God's Word through many different learning styles. Teachers work with children using age-appropriate lessons and play, through art, music, and storytelling. This class will use curriculum which walks through key Old Testament and New Testament Bible stories each year. The River (K-3rd Grade) (Third Floor) The River Coordinator: Maria Blackshaw Younger elementary-aged children will enjoy our Workshop Rotation Model Sunday school, called The River, a name the children chose themselves. Using the Spark Rotation curriculum, kindergartners through third graders will spend four weeks on a Bible story, and visit different workshops each week in order to experience the same story from different perspectives. The workshops include "MArts" (Music & Arts), "God's Table" (Cooking), "Holy Word, Holy Motion" (Bible Storytelling through games and drama), and "Holy Explosion" (Science). This year, The River will study the following units: The Lord s Prayer (Matthew 6:5-15) David (1 Sam. 16:1-13; 1 Sam. 17:4-11, 32-50) The Lord Is My Shepherd (Psalm 23) (continued from previous page) Advent and Christmas (Matthew 1:18-25; 2:1-12; Luke 1:26-58; 2:1-20) Jesus and John the Baptist (Luke 3:1-18; Matthew 3:13-17) The Disciples (Luke 5:1-11; 8:1-3; Matthew 4:18-22; 9:9-13; 10:1-4) Holy Week and Easter (Matthew 21:1-11, 27:32-66; 28:1-10) Doubting Thomas (John 20:19-31) Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-26) 4th and 5th Grade Faith in Action (Third Floor) Each week during Sunday school, 4th and 5th graders will gather together to learn about God s Word for their lives. Once a month, they will have the opportunity to put God s Word to action, as they join together in mission as the 4th & 5th Grade Faith in Action Mission Club! This class will use Connect curriculum, which walks through key Old Testament and New Testament Bible stories each year, in a two-year cycle. For Youth 6th and 7th Grade Middle School Class Sixth and seventh graders will explore faith and build upon the basics they learn as children, connecting scripture with their daily lives. This fall, the class will be using the PC(USA) s Faith Questions curriculum to respond to real faith questions posed by Presbyterian youth from across the denomination. Each unit encourages young people to look to Scripture, as well as our faith traditions, in relevant and responsive ways. Confirmation Class of th Grade Confirmation Class Confirmation means study and commitment to the major teachings of the Christian faith. The class will be following the re:form confirmation curriculum, which tackles questions about the Bible, creed, disciples, Jesus, and other beliefs. Each year includes weekly Sunday school, a fall and spring retreat, and other fellowship opportunities. Teachers and mentors build important and lasting relationships with the young people of this class, and work as a team to support and love these students throughout the year and beyond. 9th-12th Grade Senior High Class The Senior High class will begin a series of Bible studies based on themes of discipleship and seasons of the church year. If you would like to join the list, please contact Rachel Thompson (rachel@spres.org). Thursday Morning Class Thursdays, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Facilitator: Bill Logan The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. It includes some of the loftiest and most loved verses in all the Bible: "And the Word became flesh...," "For God so loved the world...," "You who are without sin cast the first stone...," "I am the resurrection and the life...," "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." The writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that his readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they "may have life in his name." Join the group as they explore together Adam Hamilton s celebrated new study John: The Gospel of Light and Life. Fall Class Schedule: September 29, October 6, 13, 20, and November 3. Discipleship Class Thursdays (1:00-3:00 p.m.) (Trent Classroom) Facilitator: Sarah Ludwig Beginning Thursday, September 15, the Thursday afternoon Discipleship Class will focus on unique and illuminating video courses from The Great Courses series. They will begin the fall with the DVD course "Death, Dying, and the Afterlife: Lessons from World Cultures," by Professor Mark Berkson of Hamline University. Each installment this year will feature renowned scholars and professors in the fields of biblical study and ancient church history. Hungry Women Every other Thursday (11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon) (Session Room) Facilitator: Elizabeth Link This fall, Hungry Women will be exploring the very brief but very insightful work from Anne Lamott on prayer: Help, Thanks, Wow. The book holds little research on the history of prayer or even prayers of the Bible. Instead, Lamott ponders her own history in prayer, her way of communicating with God. She exposes her own soft underbelly by telling of how she speaks to God in the depth of pain, in great joy, and in times of deep need. In so doing, she draws the reader into a conversation about the reality of what prayer is and how it happens, rather than instructing on what prayer should "be." It is these three prayers asking for assistance from a higher power (help), appreciating what we have that is good (thanks), and Page 9 feeling awe at the world around us (wow) that can get us through the day and can show us the way forward. Fall Class Schedule: September 29, October 13, 27, November 10. KAIROS: καιρός Wednesdays in October Guides for Interpreting Scripture (6:00-7:00 p.m., Trent Room) Facilitator: Dr. George Anderson For Presbyterians, the Bible is the authoritative text for faith and practice. Many have learned, however, that the Bible is a confusing guide with its different kinds of literature and the tensions and contradictions that are found within its pages. Join Dr. Anderson for this special four-week course, and explore biblical interpretation together. October 5 October 12 October 19 November 2

6 Wednesdays in October (continued) Be Still: An Introduction Contemplative Prayer (6:00-7:00 p.m., Reading Room) Facilitators: Rhesa Bailey and Cathy Shoulders Be still, and know that I am God... (Psalm 46:10a) Christian contemplative prayer originated in the earliest days of the Christian church with the Desert Fathers and Mothers, lay people who lived a life of simplicity and poverty in the deserts of Palestine, Egypt, and Syria. Through the middle ages, Christian contemplative practice was preserved in the monasteries and abbeys, although to a large degree these traditions were lost after the Reformation. In recent years the Church has witnessed a resurgence of these practices, which include, for example, centering prayer, meditation, and lectio divina, the prayerful reading of the Bible. In contrast to many Christian practices that focus on understanding God through ideas, contemplative practices seek to develop an inward peace and quiet so that we move beyond words and ideas to an inward experience of God-within-us. Join for this special four-week course as an introduction to contemplative prayer and begin to practice this ancient Christian tradition in community. October 5 October 12 October 19 October : Wednesdays in Lent Beginning with Ash Wednesday, March 1, join us for weekly Lenten evening worship (6:00-6:30 p.m.) in Kirk Hall, followed by opportunities for study. This Lent, participants will have the chance to undertake an eight-week indepth Bible study.
