January 7, 2018 Worship at 9:00 and 11:00 A.M. Baptism of the Lord Gathering Music Song for a New Year Gilbert Martin Prayer of Preparation Peace be to this house, and to all who worship herein. Peace be to those who enter, and to all who in prayer depart. Peace be to those who love it, and who love the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Welcome and Announcements Minute for Mission - House of Bread (9:00 and 11:00 a.m.) Jen Brothers Prelude Christians, Be Joyful J.S. Bach Call to Worship: Leader: All things bright and beautiful, People: God created for our enjoyment. Leader: All things wrenching and hard, People: God holds with tender care. Leader: You and I, neighbors and strangers, friends and enemies, People: God loves without condition. Leader: So let us worship God. *Hymn No. 475 *Invocation The Lord s Prayer Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Children, Worship, and Wonder children (4k-1st grade) excused to CWW on final verse of this hymn. Glory to God, p. 35 (using debts, debtors) A Time for Confession Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (in unison) We are sorry, Lord, for when our praise has been weak, our attention diverted, and our energy slight. You call us to be fully committed with heart, soul, mind, and strength. Be patient with us Lord. And forgive us. Help us to a greater commitment that we may know a greater joy. *Gloria Patri (Hymn No. 581) *Affirmation of Faith Philippians 2:1-11 We believe in Jesus Christ, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Concerns The Morning Prayer The Presentation of God s Tithe and Our Offerings ** Call to the Offering Offertory Alleluia, Song of Gladness Robert J. Powell Ritual of Friendship (Please sign the Friendship Pad, pass it along to others in your pew, then return it to center.) *Doxology (Hymn No. 606) *Prayer of Dedication Anthem Sanctus (Requiem) Gabriel Faure ed., Rutter Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory, O Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer for Illumination Scripture Reading Matthew 3:1-17 New Testament, pp. 2-3 Affirmation of Faith Philippians 2:1-11 serves as our Affirmation of Faith. The passage is in the form of a parabola, which is the shape of a V. The passage starts high with Jesus equality with God, then moves low with Jesus emptying himself to the point of death, and then moves high again where his name is above every name. In Greek, the root word for emptying is kenosis. The Kenotic Heresy is the belief that Jesus was just God, then became just human at birth, and then became just God again at the resurrection. The true power of the text is that in Jesus God who is above us, meets us in our humanity, and most specifically at the point of our greatest need. We request an audience with you in the chamber of silence... Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! Sermon Jesus Joins a Country Church Dr. George C. Anderson The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper *Hymn of Preparation No. 525 Let Us Break Bread Together (9:00 a.m.) Let Us Break Bread Together (v. 1) (11:00 a.m.) Let Us Break Bread Together Response Assurance of Pardon Congregation sings together: Hymn No. 90 Wait for the Lord Wait for the Lord, whose day is near.
