3 SUNDAY SECOND Meet & Greet (9:30-9:55 a.m.) Classes for all ages (10:00-10:45 a.m.) Nurseries (Infant, Toddler, 2's and 3's Rooms, near Fellowship Hall) Nursery Coordinator: Ruth Robertson The Nursery is open and available for infants and toddlers during both morning worship services and Sunday school. During the Sunday school hour, volunteer teachers lead toddlers and the 2's and 3's in a special age-appropriate class. Nursery staff and volunteers are under the nursery coordinator's supervision. During Worship Children, Worship, and Wonder (CWW) (Pre-K-1st Grade, Third Floor) Volunteer Coordinator: Alice Light During the Sunday school year, children ages pre-k through first grade enjoy their own special time of worship and wonder at CWW. Following The Children's Time during the 11:00 a.m. worship, children are excused to the CWW worship space on the third floor. They learn the stories of our faith and worship God in a setting and style geared toward their needs and stages of development. Biblical stories are told in the context of a worship experience that includes singing, response time, and "the feast." We hope this will nurture their innate sense of wonder, as they develop a sense of awe and reverence for worship. For more information, contact Alice Light (alicelight.va@gmail.com). Page 4 For Children Preschool (4-year-old Sunday School, near Fellowship Hall) Children will enjoy learning about God's Word through many different learning styles. Teachers work with children using age-appropriate lessons and play, through art, music, and storytelling. This class will use curriculum which walks through key Old Testament and New Testament Bible stories each year. The River (K-3rd Grade) (Third Floor) The River Coordinator: Maria Blackshaw Younger elementary-aged children will enjoy our Workshop Rotation Model Sunday school, called The River, a name the children chose themselves. Using the Spark Rotation curriculum, kindergartners through third graders will spend four weeks on a Bible story, and visit different workshops each week in order to experience the same story from different perspectives. The workshops include "MArts" (Music & Arts), "God's Table" (Cooking), "Holy Word, Holy Motion" (Bible Storytelling through games and drama), and "Holy Explosion" (Science). This year, The River will study the following units: Wandering in the Wilderness (Exodus 16:1-18, 17:1-7, 20:1-17) The Battle of Jericho (Joshua 6:1-20) Ruth (Ruth 1:1-22, 2:1-17) Advent, Christmas (3 weeks repeat from 2012) A Storm (Matthew 8:23-27) The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) Ten Men Healed (Luke 17:11-19) Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42) Love is... (I Corinthians 13) 4th and 5th Grade Faith in Action (Third Floor) Each week during Sunday school, 4th and 5th graders will gather together to learn about God s Word for their lives. Once a month, they will have the opportunity to put God s Word to action, as they join together in mission as the 4th & 5th Grade Faith in Action Mission Club! This class will use Connect curriculum, which walks through key Old Testament and New Testament Bible stories each year, in a two-year cycle. For Youth 6th and 7th Grade Middle School Class Sixth and seventh graders will explore faith and build upon the basics they learn as children, connecting scripture with their daily lives. This fall, the class will be using the PC(USA) s Faith Questions curriculum to respond to real faith questions posed by Presbyterian Youth from across the denomination. Each unit encourages young people to look to Scripture, as well as our faith traditions, in relevant and responsive ways. 8th Grade Confirmation Class Teachers: Paul Anderson, Sarah Ludwig, Ken Lyons, Christal Pearson Confirmation means study and commitment to the major teachings of the Christian faith. The Page 5 class will be following the re:form confirmation curriculum, which tackles questions about the Bible, creed, disciples, Jesus, and other beliefs. Each year includes weekly Sunday school, a fall and spring retreat, and other fellowship opportunities. Teachers and mentors build important and lasting relationships with the young people of this class, and work as a team to support and love these students throughout the year and beyond. 9th-12th Grade Senior High Class This year, Sr. High Sunday school class will continue its study of Echo the Story, a 36-session overview of the Bible for youth. Using creative and engaging means, the class will discover meaning and identity in the biblical narrative. Confirmation Class of 2015 The Intersection

4 Classes for Adults Journey Through the Bible (Trent Classroom) Facilitators: Doug Althouse, Bill Blaylock, Dick Hodges, Edie Naughton This fall, the Journey Class is trying something new! Using Covenant curriculum, a DVD and discussion-based study, the class will embark on an in-depth group Bible study that centers around our relationships with God, with each other, and with the world. It differs from other Bible studies in that it emphasizes the biblical concept of Covenant the enduring commitment between God and people as a unifying pattern throughout the entire Bible. The class hopes to create a learning experience where scripture meets everyday life both within and beyond the sphere of church. There are several ways to connect to the course. One may simply plan to attend the Sunday school class each week, attend the class in addition to daily scripture readings, or attend the class and take part in further study using the participant books. Consider this exciting new opportunity to better understand God s call, love, and unexpected favor. 6 KAIROS: καιρός Wednesdays in October It seems like busy is a word we hear more and more these days. Each week s schedule seems fuller than the last. Calendars are stacked with schoolwork, committee meetings, appointments, and errands. It is not always easy to find time to simply be still. But we believe that our bodies and our spirits need time to pause, to recharge, and to reconnect with our Creator. There is an ancient Greek word for finding or making this kind of space in our lives. It is a word that means the right or opportune moment. This word, kairos (καιρός), has been used over the centuries to describe time for spiritual reflection, and even, to put it simply, God s time. This fall, we invite you to create space in your week for Kairos. During the month of October, a special evening during Advent, and in the spring season of Lent, there will be 30-minute Kairos Evening Worship services, from 6:15-6:45 p.m. Kairos Worship Schedule (6:15-6:45 p.m.): October 7: Casual Worship and Music, Kirk Hall 7:00 p.m. Kairos Evening Study October 14: Celtic Evensong, Kirk Hall College of Elders Dinner, No Evening Study October 21: Casual Worship and Music, Kirk Hall 7:00 p.m. Kairos Evening Study October 28: Taizé Prayer, Kirk Hall 7:00 p.m. Kairos Evening Study Welcome to worship, learning, fellowship, and service at Second Presbyterian Church.
