EASTER CELEBRATION OF THE RESURRECTION SUNDAY, APRIL 1, :00 & 11:00 AM WORSHIP SANCTUARY TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Cover: He Qi. Do Not Hold on to Me EASTER April 1, :00 & 11:00 am Worship Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. We believe worship is the heart of our life together. We gather as a community and prepare our hearts to worship God. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence all electronic devices. Easter is the oldest and greatest of the Christian festivals. It has always been regarded as the chief and most joyous of the observances of the church, commemorating the resurrection of Christ and the restoration of life to the world which sin had ruined. The liturgical color for Easter is white, representing the glory of the resurrection. OPENING VOLUNTARY Fanfare C.S. Lang Allegro from Symphony No. 5 William Boyce Canzon Terza Giovanni Gabrieli Canzon Quarta Fanfare for Easter Robert Elmore CALL TO WORSHIP One: The disciples were confused and distraught in the darkness of that first Easter morning. All: Look, the stone is rolled away! One: All: Mary wept by the tomb, wondering where they had taken the Lord s body. But then, a stranger called her by name. One: All: Alleluia, Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! Alleluia! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN Jesus Christ is Risen Today Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! easter hymn Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! 2 *Those who are able, please stand.

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured. Alleluia! Now above the sky he s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as God s love. Alleluia! Praise our God, ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: God of new life, All: We confess that we do not always perceive your presence among us. Easter is the central event of our faith, a celebration of our transformation into God s new people. It is not simply the miracle of a dead person raised from a grave, but a celebration of power that can shatter death in order that people can freely serve the God of life. Resurrection shouts no to everything in our world that works against God s will, and yes to God s victory. adapted from The Companion to the Book of Common Worship Silent confession One: All: God of resurrection, of life and death and rebirth, Renew our hearts and minds and open our eyes that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON CHORAL RESPONSE Lloyd Pfautsch Easter Fanfare (Christ Has Arisen) Christ the Lord breaks the bonds of death, lives again and will forever reign! He is here in all his risen glory. Then let us lift our voices. To the Lord, we will sing the blessed song of the angels; Gloria in excelsis Deo! WELCOME and CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. American composer, Lloyd Pfautsch ( ), longtime Professor of Sacred Music and Director of Choral Music at SMU, was also a widely published and performed composer. A gifted baritone, he sang with the Robert Shaw Chorale and the NBC radio chorus during his graduate studies. 3

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Children are invited to come forward to witness the sacrament of baptism. Presentation Baptismal Covenant and Profession of Faith Thanksgiving of the Water One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Baptism *Welcome Congregation stands for the reception and hymn With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you into Christ s church; for we are all one in Christ. We promise to love, encourage, and support you, to share the good news of the gospel with you, and to help you know and follow Christ. *Congregational Response o waly waly O loving God, unto thy care we give again this child of thine, baptized and blessed with faithful prayer and sealed with love s victorious sign. This text of this morning s anthem is a beautiful anonymous poem that seems incredibly appropriate for today s reading. The music is by Canadianborn composer and conductor Eleanor Daley (b. 1955). Educated at Queens University in Kingston Ontario, she currently resides in Toronto. In addition to regular commissions as a composer of choral works she serves as Music Director at Fairlawn Avenue United Church and as accompanist for the Bach Children s Chorus. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION NEW TESTAMENT READING John 20:1-18 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. ANTHEM In Remembrance Eleanor Daley Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle morning rain. And when you wake in the morning s hush, I am the sweet uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. 4

SERMON Signs of the Living Christ Pam Driesell *HYMN OF AFFIRMATION hyfrydol In the darkness of the morning just before the hint of dawn, Mary Magdalene discovered Jesus Christ, her friend, was gone. Days before, she faced his suffering; she stayed with him as he died. Seeing now his tomb was empty, she remained outside and cried. As she wept, the warmth of sunrise filled the waiting world with light. Then she turned and saw a stranger, though her tears obscured her sight. Mary! said the smiling stranger as her vision was restored. She cried Teacher! and she touched him: Jesus Christ, her risen Lord. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. When Christ was crucified, humanity died with him on Calvary. But on Easter morning, a new world was born raised up with the crucified and risen Christ. Bursting the bonds of death, the first human being of a new human race, Jesus Christ, appeared among those who crucified him. In the midst of the old sin-struck world, God gave the world a new beginning, a new humanity. from The Companion to the Book of Common Worship GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Hallelujah Chorus G.F. Handel Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever, Hallelujah! *DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION 5

*CLOSING HYMN The Day of Resurrection! lancashire The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad: The Passover of gladness, the Passover of God. From death to life eternal, from this world to the sky, Our Christ hath brought us over with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright The Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light, And, listening to his accents, may hear, so calm and plain, His own All hail! and, hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, let earth the song begin, Let the round world keep triumph, and all that is therein; Let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, For Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end! *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION BENEDICTION RESPONSE Alleluia victory This morning s familiar Concluding Voluntary is an arrangement for organ and brass of the final movement of the Fifth Organ Symphony of Parisian organist and composer Charles-Marie Widor ( ). Widor followed César Franck as Professor of Organ at the famed Paris Conservatoire, and at age 26 was appointed organist at the Church of Saint- Sulpice in CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY Charles-Marie Widor Toccata from Symphony V, op. 42 Following worship, you are invited for a time of conversation and refreshments on the front lawn. 6
