Centering Prayer sessions This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. 3 TWENTY - THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 From the Desk of Fr. Ron To gossip is to talk about the personal lives of people to others. Oftentimes, we are tempted to do so when the person we speak of has offended us, said something to us, conducted themselves in a way we find distasteful, or made us envious. In gossiping, we seek comfort and consolation from others, who were not involved or join in with others about another person we too may dislike. This weekend s section of the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter Eighteen, deals with our life together as the church, the assembly of believers. If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother, (Matthew 18:15). Wisely, Jesus counsels that if this does not work, bring others who support your position with you. Even in the extreme, bringing the matter up before the whole church, if one continues to deny a problem the advice is: If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector, (Matthew 18:17). The question remains, how would one treat a tax collector or Gentile? Matthew the Evangelist, who is attributed the authorship of this very Gospel was a tax collector. How was he treated? He was challenged and welcomed to follow Jesus. We have an obligation to speak when we are aware of injustice. But, rather than speaking to those who have no influence to change a situation which gossiping often entails, we need to speak to those who can do something about a situation. In 1942 the Quaker community had coined the phrase, Speaking truth to power. Our lesson from Ezekiel 33 lays out the moral obligation we have to do so. We are held morally responsible to say something to those who venture astray. However, our attitude and intention about doing so needs to be grounded in the love for the other, care for their wellbeing, and the whole community, within which we live. As we celebrate the Birth of Mary this weekend, our Patronal Feast, we realize that Mary spoke truth to others often. To the Angel Gabriel after he announces the will of God for her she asks him How can this be? To the young Jesus whom she and Joseph considered lost: Son, why have you done this to us? Additionally to the servants at the wedding at Cana, Do whatever He tells you. Mary, whom we celebrate today, dealt with life head on as we too should. Mary, whom we celebrate today, pray for us. There will be a Second Collection for Hurricane Relief for the Flood Victims of Hurricane Harvey on Sunday, October 1. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) president, Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, has called for prayers and solidarity with those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Cardinal DiNardo also called on all people of good will to closely monitor future calls for assistance for victims and survivors in the days ahead. DIOCESAN WEDDING CELEBRATION The Diocese of Buffalo wishes to honor couples celebrating your their 50th, 60th or 70th Wedding Anniversaries for the year of 2017 and recognize the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice, challenges and comforts in daily Married life with a special Mass, that will be celebrated on Sunday, October 15 by Bishop Richard Malone, at 3pm at St. Joseph Cathedral, Buffalo. RESOURCE for ALL AGES: Three Keys to Effective Listening: As disciples of Jesus, we are called to stay present to each other. Tim Hogan, Director of the Grace Counseling Center in Detroit offers us some guidelines and suggestions as it relates to Pope Francis encyclical, Amoris Laetitia, linked here: v=igb-perotgi. In the 33 minute presentation, Hogan offers some questions that each of us can ask for people who may be struggling: How can I pray for you?; I wonder what God may be up to for you right now?; What is it like right now when you pray?; and I wonder how this suffering will change you? Are you interested in serving as a Eucharistic Minister? Lector? Server? Minister of Hospitality? We are gearing up the 4 th Quarter schedules, and always welcome new people. Some climbed up to the tops of trees and walls to see us go by, and shouted down to us Now, when I read in the New Testament about those enchanting scenes of Our Lord s passing through Palestine, I think of those poor roads and lanes from Aljustrel to Fatima and on to the Cova Da Iria! I give thanks to God, offering Him the faith of our good Portuguese people, and I think: If these people so humbled themselves before three poor children, just because they were mercifully granted the grace to speak to the Mother of God, what would they now do if they saw Our Lord Himself in person before them? He also described in great detail the blessings of the future kingdom of the Messiah. When St. Jerome penned his famous line Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ, he wrote it in his introduction on Isaiah. We care. Let us help you. 7 TWENTY - THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 HELPING A LOVED ONE FIND HELP FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE BY ADAM COOK Watching someone you love endure pain and suffering is heartbreaking. You want to help in any way you can, whether it s by offering advice or assisting them in finding someone else to help. If someone you love is suffering from substance abuse, you may not know exactly what to say or what to do, but you can support them in finding treatment. Conversation not Confrontation: If you think your loved one is abusing drugs, it s important to prepare yourself before you intervene. The person is likely to be angry when you bring up their issues, but it s important for you to remain calm. Have a contact for a treatment center ready to go so you can immediately reach out if your loved one agrees to treatment. Although making time for a meaningful conversation seems difficult, and you may think it s easier to discuss such a difficult topic over the phone, having a quick conversation in the car or over texts or phone calls undercuts the seriousness and importance of the topic. It s better to do it in person. The Talk: When speaking, be supportive and sincerely listen to responses, but remain firm in your course of action. Talk and listen so that it s a true conversation, not a lecture. Instead of using a moralistic tone about substance abuse, note the consequences you ve observed for the person and their family and friends. Don t demand your loved one stop using. Your goal is to make your loved one aware that you re concerned and that he/ she may need treatment. Calmly state that you believe substance use is occurring, provide all evidence, and express what you want the person to do about it. If the discussion becomes too emotional or seems to be going nowhere, postpone the conversation and become better prepared. You can try speaking with a counselor to help you find effective techniques that work naturally for you. Getting Help: Residential treatments are just one option for substance abuse treatment, which can take place in different forms and settings and for different lengths of time. Although the approach is typically similar regardless of the substance, the treatment is modified based on the characteristics of the patient. In addition to the individual s substance abuse issues, programs address the individual s physical, psychological, emotional, and social issues. Remember that addiction is a chronic disease, so as with diabetes or asthma, treatment is not a cure but one part of the process of learning to manage the disease. Educate yourself on what constitutes quality treatment and the different types that are available. Get a screening assessment (preferably through a substance abuse counselor) to determine the severity of the issue and an appropriate level of care. The program will typically require a pre-screening as well to ensure it s a good fit for your loved one. If it s not, they should refer you to a better-suited program. Staying Clean: Treatment doesn t end after discharge. Staying clean and avoiding relapse is difficult, but success is more likely if you re prepared before discharge. You should try to offer a solid support system for your loved one, ensuring he or she follows through with their post-discharge plan. Know what you ll do in the event of a relapse and monitor your loved one in a supportive way.try to help them find places to volunteer and help in their community so they don t have too much free time.
