January, 2016 Celebrate Epiphany - Fire, Friends, Food O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Epiphany is the great Feast in January and the Season the Church year that encompasses almost all of January. Epiphany is the Season of Light the season that reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World and that his light is for all people in all times and in all places. Furthermore, Epiphany is the season that urges us to be bearers of that light as we remember the centrality of our own baptism in the commemoration of Jesus baptism the after the Epiphany. Epiphany is the Season wherein we take stock of how we respond to being bearers of the light. To mark the season of Epiphany we will have a shared parish gathering. Abingdon, Kingston and Ware will gather at Ware Church on Saturday, January 9, from 5:30-8:00pm. We will burn the Christmas greens. Ware Church will be open for prayer and quiet meditation. Food will be available. Fellowship will be all around. This is the first of several shared parish events for 2016 and gives members of all parishes a chance to know one another better as we grow in faith together. 1

Volunteer! Have you ever wanted to help at church but weren t sure how? Well, here is your opportunity. All the names on the Laity page each month are volunteers. These areas are important in the life of the church and what is so great is that the areas require little or no training. Please call the church office, and the parish administrator will make certain that your name and willingness to serve are passed on to the person in charge of the area of your interest. Youth The Christmas wreath sales was an amazing success bringing in funds to support the activities of the Youth Group throughout the year. We would like to thank everyone for their support of our youth and to Karen and Jeff Merrill of Farmer s Daughter, supplier of the fresh fir wreaths. Farmer s Daughter is located north of Gloucester at Woods Cross Roads. We would like to thank Pat Roane and the Youth Group for baking delicious cookies on Saturday, December 13 in preparation of filling Barbara s Angel Cookies on, December 20 th. School classes spent time baking, filling and labeling bags for our annual missionary project that helps feed those less fortunate and spreads good spirit to those who may be shut-in from our community. We also are thankful for Ceci Brown for helping the children in designing Christmas cards to all our friends in nursing homes. Farm-to-Table Coffee Hour Members of our congregation have enjoyed Farm-to-Table events following church services. The events have been beneficial in nurturing our members with fellowship and conversation. The soups have been prepared for our members by Kelsick Gardens and Good Life Kitchen. Members have donated bread and desserts and some breads supplied by Jim Williams at Ware Neck Produce. We are looking forward to our event om January 10 to introduce Rachel Cuba [Senior Choir] with our theme of Eating Healthy in We have been contacted by Betty Wrenn Day of the Gazette Journal who will be our guest for the purpose of publishing an article in the Gloucester Mathews Gazette Journal. Please contact me with your recipes or Becky at the office so we may have copies available on that day. We look forward to seeing you all there! 3

Christian Education We would like to bring back some fun activities to our School classes - celebrating birthdays and Stewardship of Creation s Bee Knees awards. The first recipient of our Bee Knees award will go to Rose Kibler. Rose helped decorate our Christmas tree with ornaments and garland. She demonstrated exceptional talent in the job. When asked how she acquired such knowledge, she replied, I decorated my Christmas tree all by myself! Rose will receive this award for her demonstrating values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion, and good character. Our Stewardship of Creation s Butterfly Garden is in need of some TLC to prepare it for our winter months ahead. We would like to thank Betty Gilberti for helping to keep the garden beautiful during the summer and fall months. The birds are beginning to forage for food and our bird feeder near the office will soon need to be filled. Donations of seed will be accepted in the kitchen. The classes will be more than happy to help with labor placing it. We would like to thank Nell Jones for delivering the cutest mice to the kitchen on, December 20 and they were delicious! Did I forget to say their tails were made of twizzlers, eyes of cranraisins and eyes of slice almonds? The School classes enjoyed the gingerbread as a snack during their Angel Cookie baking. January Birthdays If you wish for your birthday to appear in the monthly list, please call the office. 2 - John Kiku 4 - Brenden Hall 4 - Kensi Wiggins 5 - Patrick Bains 6 - Meg Teagle 9 - Priscilla Hogge 9 - Jimmy Kilduff 10 - Miranda McClintic 11 - Matthew Haskell 11 - William Hicks 11 - Robert Johnson 13 - Maynard Nichols 14 - Vicki Hecht 14 - Nancy James 15 - Mary Whitley 16 - Marjorie Masek 16 - Wrenn Kibler 16 - Kirby Smith 17 - Bryan Hartley 19 - Brooke Edwards 21 - Ray Bowden 21 - Monica Blackston 22 - Sarah Teagle 24 - Stuart Blackston 25 - Chris Aycock 25 - Marianne Bowles 26 - Sue Zima 27 - Derek Kibler 27 - Thomas West 28 - Betty Wornom 29 - Paul Crook 30 - Kirk Canaday 4

Many Thanks! Thank you for your response to Ware s Christmas outreach to 10 families in the community in December. After all items arrived, the food, boxes, bags and gifts were sorted and then picked up on Friday, December 18. Thank you volunteers who sorted and packed Anne Dyal, Shot Tabb, Martha Ambrose, Peg Moncure, and Miranda McClintic. Thanks also to Ed James and his children for putting up the Christmas tree. Gifts of Flowers for the Altar in Ware Church Each except during the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent, friends and parishioners give flowers in memory of loved ones or in honor of events such as weddings, births, or anniversaries. If you wish to give flowers, call Beth Howerton at or e- mail her at b.howerton@yahoo.com. The 221 st Annual Council of the Diocese of Virginia: January 21-23, 2016 The Rector, Grant Ambrose and our Lay Delegate, Ann Brown will soon be attending our Annual Diocesan Council. Keep them in your prayers, along with the delegations from the other parishes in the Diocese. The Annual Council is the once-a-year gathering of delegates and clergy to conduct the business of the Diocese and to have fellowship with our bishop and one another. Remember that we are not a lone congregation but part of the Diocese of Virginia with Bishop Johnston as leader of all of the parishes. In fact, the Bishop is the chief priest and pastor of every parish in the Diocese and we look to him for leadership and support. Pray for the Holy Spirit to be with our Diocese at this meeting. Young Adult Community The Young Adult Community (YAC) is an opportunity for young adults to meet for spiritual formation, refreshment, and engagement with the larger world around us. While the typical age range of a young adult is considered the 20s-30s, this group welcomes anyone. Submit questions, ideas, and RSVPs to our address: WareChurchYAC@gmail.com The next YAC meeting is, January 3, 4:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Join us for a Christmas party as we celebrate on the 10 th day of Christmas! Come for food, games, and lords a-leaping. 5

Giving Statements, 2015 and Offering Envelopes, 2016 The 2015 giving statements will be in the narthex before the end of January. Review your statement and call the church office if you have any questions. The 2016 offering envelopes are also there. If you did not receive envelopes and desire them, please call the church office. A Special Thank You Thank you so much to everyone who remembered me (and Caroline, too) at Christmas Anne, Stephanie, Margi and David, Beth and Kenny, Michael and Shari, Grant and Martha, Donna and Newton, the Women of Ware, Mary Ann and Buddy, Barbara, Fred and Bruce, Pat and Elizabeth, Carole, John and Mary, Nell and Wes, Bobby and Eddie, Jane and Peter, and Ware Church. The gifts, cards, and treats were most appreciated. You are very dear to me. Remember, Jesus loves you and so do I. Please forgive me if I left out anyone s name. My house is sort of crazy on Christmas morning (no surprise there!) and some of the tags may have been put in File 13 by accident. In addition, thank you for calls, cards, prayers, sympathy, and especially the hugs when my daughter s fiancée Patrick Danforth was tragically killed in a freak accident on Route 17 as he was helping some people who had a disabled vehicle.
