Two More Congregational Questions: Question 1: Who Physically Wrote Deuteronomy 34? Then the Lord said to him, This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, I will give it to your descendants. I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it. And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. Deuteronomy 34:4-6 Tradition states that the Books of the Law, the first five books of the Old Testament, were written by Moses. In Deuteronomy 34, we have the death of Moses. The question becomes how could Moses write about his own death? Now the most common response has been that Moses second in command, Joshua, wrote Deuteronomy 34 and then continued on to write the next pieces of Israel s history with the book of Joshua. This makes sense, except for a few details. Most of the chapter is a summary of things that all Israel would have known. Moses climbed Mount Nebo in order to see the Promised Land because God had said in Numbers 20:12 that Moses was not allowed to enter it. Once on top of the mountain, Moses died and Israel mourned. In Deuteronomy 34:4, however, there is a quote of what God told Moses and in verse 6 it says that God buried Moses in a place that to this day no one knows where that grave is. Both of these points seem to say that someone witnessed this event and wrote it down. Further, verses 7-12 all happen after Moses had died. Yet, the text doesn t mention any people who traveled with Moses. So my thoughts become, did Moses go up the hill by himself? Maybe. The quote of the Lord in verse 4 is just a repeat of what God had said in Deuteronomy 32: God had told Moses that he was to climb Mount Nebo, where he would see the promise land and die. It is very possible that the people would credit the Lord with saying something he had already said. It is very possible, therefore, that Moses went up the hill by himself and Joshua wrote chapter 34 down as a summary of what had happened. That would make sense also with verse 6 where many translations say that the Lord himself buried Moses. It could also be that Moses went up the mountain with a companion. Many other translations have verse 6 translated not as the Lord buried, but and he was buried. This does fit with the Hebrew, as verse 6 contains no specific reference to the LORD. It could be that the place of Moses burial was lost to time. By this I mean that the earliest known examples of the Hebrew alphabet date back to the 10 th Century BC, the time of King David. Deuteronomy was written in the 15 th Century. Many scholars suspect that the Book of the Law was carried down for centuries in oral form, before being put to text. Or, the reference could be an editorial edition. We can see another editorial edition in verse 10. Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. Why would you write that unless there was a period of time in between Moses death and the completion of the text? It seems evident that Moses did not write all of this text. Though many lean on prophesy and say, Hey, why couldn t God tell Moses what was going to happen and have him write it down before he climbed the mountain? I don t think we could ever know for sure who specifically wrote this text. Yet, Joshua, with a few editorial editions, does seem to be the most likely candidate as this is the traditional view and Joshua was Moses right hand man and successor. Question 2: Where is the altar of incense located; is it in the Most Holy Place or in the Holy Place? Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered Ark of the Covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. - Hebrews 9:3-4 Put the altar in front of the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law before the atonement cover that is over the tablets of the covenant law where I will meet with you. Aaron must burn fragrant incense on the

altar every morning when he tends the lamps. He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come. - Exodus 30:6-8 This is a tricky question to catch; but basically, a detailed reading of the above scriptures seems to have the altar of incense in different places. Hebrews has it in the Most Holy Place, while Exodus has it in the Holy Place. I didn t think I would be able to answer this question. It took me a while to figure out the right way to ask the question in order to find the answer. There appears to be two distinct explanations for what is going on here. The first argues that Hebrews is not speaking of the Golden Altar of Incense, but instead the Golden Censer of Incense. Many of the modern English translations handle the translation of the Greek as the Altar of Incense. Other English translations, however, like the KJV and NKJV translate the Greek as the Golden Censer of Incense. This is also true of most of the English translations that came out of the Reformation, including the Miles Coverdale, Tyndale, Wycliffe and Bishops Bible. The Latin Vulgate also translates this as Golden Censer. This would make things fit together nicely. It puts the Golden Altar of Incense in the Holy Place where Exodus has it. Also, what follows in Hebrews 9:6-10 is a clear explanation of what happened during the Day of Atonement. Part of this ritual is that the High Priest is to bring a censer of coals and incense into the Most Holy Place. Leviticus 16:12 & 13: He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain. He is to put the incense on the fire before the Lord, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die. If the author of Hebrews is speaking of the Day of Atonement in verses 6-10, it would follow that verses 1-5 were also discussing the Day of Atonement and would then be speaking of the Golden Censer of Incense and not the Altar. The second response has to deal with what the NIV translates as which had. The Greek root here is echo. The general argument goes that the word is being used here to indicate close association and not location. Almost every English translation does something like this: the Most Holy Place, which had the golden This is a translation indicating location; i.e. The Most Holy Place contained Instead, many scholars argue close association. The Golden Altar is connected to the Most Holy Place. Hebrew scholar F. Delitzsch describes it like a sign board of a shop. The sign belongs to the shop, and not to the street. The golden censer was kept in the Holy Place, but brought into the Most Holy Place when the high priest entered once a year. The idea is that the writer of Hebrews was not stressing the location of the altar of incense; rather, he was emphasizing its theological connection with the most holy place of the tabernacle. Again, this would make things fit together nicely. Hebrews chapter 9 is part of a greater section of Hebrews that is arguing that the Old Testament Priesthood and Covenant were inferior earthly replicas of the Christ and New Covenant. He argues throughout the book that the priesthood/tabernacle is the theological precursors of Christ and His Priesthood. Christ is doing completely and totally what Aaron s Priesthood did partly and continually. Hebrews 9:11 & 12: But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but, he entered the Most Holy Place once and for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. In this way, Hebrews is saying that Christ s Priesthood brought the Altar into the Most Holy Place. What Aaron did partially, once a year on the Day of Atonement, Christ did completely and permanently. Whether the author of Hebrews is saying that the Golden Censer of Incense was brought into the Most Holy Place or he was theologically saying that Jesus brought the Golden Altar into the Most Holy Place, I do not know. But I do think that either argument fits within the larger framework of Christology that Hebrews is defining. Either argument works.

Veteran s Sunday & Potluck - November 9 th the service will honor veterans with a special speaker, Rev. Russ Clark, and a potluck after church. Rev. Clark is a retired Methodist minister, and served our country as an infantry commander in Vietnam. He currently volunteers as a chaplain with Point Man International Ministries, which focuses on the Spiritual healing of soldiers with PTSD. This Sunday, we really want to honor veterans and those actively serving. We will have tables set up in Fellowship Hall for you to display any photos or memorabilia that represents your service to our country or the service of your loved ones. We, also, are doing a love offering for Point Man International Ministries after worship. Gideon s Sunday Steve Smith will be sharing with us all of the wonderful things the Gideons do in spreading God s Word throughout the world, on Sunday November 16 th. There will be a special love offering for the Gideons taken after worship. Church Decorating November 23 rd after worship Help get the sanctuary ready for the Christmas Season. The decorating only takes a little while, but it really helps to get us in the Christmas Spirit. The men of the church are all invited to Dan s Family Pizza for food, fun and fellowship, November 22 nd & December 20 th at 9am. Thanksgiving Eve Chapel Service November 26 7pm Join us for a worship service that is designed to prepare us for a thankful Thanksgiving. It is fun to worship in the Chapel. The worship is more intimate and the acoustics are different from the sanctuary. Sights & Sounds of Christmas- December 4 th at 6pm Mark your calendars for this fun event. The night starts at 2 nd Presbyterian and then travels to seven other churches (including our own church), ending at the Catholic Church for a cookie and punch reception. Each church is decorated for the season and each church has a mini-concert of Christmas music. This is a great way to kick off Advent and see all the downtown churches ready for Christmas. Children s Christmas Play The youth of the church will be performing their Christmas Play: The 12 Days of Christmas December 7 th in worship. They will be practicing for the play and will be preparing very important parts of the play during Extended Church November 9-30 th and will do a full dress rehearsal during the Sunday School Hour December 7 th. After church, will be the Deacon s Christmas Dinner. Candlelit Christmas Eve Service 7pm - This year we will again be doing a fun twist on the classic 9 Lessons and Carols service. The service will feature a whole bunch of carols and music from many different church members with the Gospel message weaved throughout. The night will end in everybody s favorite way. With a candle lit version of Silent Night.

Stop Hunger Now Mission Day Second Presbyterian has invited us to take part in a fun mission day supporting Stop Hunger Now on December 14 th from 12:30 to noon at Second. Basically, we will spend the day packaging meals for use around the world. Second Presbyterian is working to have 80 volunteers package $8,000 worth of food into single meals. Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. Stop Hunger Now's meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world. The E&O Committee has pledged $500 and 10 volunteers. Think of it like our Operation Christmas Child packing party, but with food. If you would like to volunteer your money or time, see Rev Steve or Kim Dershem. Women s Christmas Luncheon- The Women's Christmas luncheon will be held at the Moundbuilder s Country Club on December 13, Noon. The price is $16 per person. Deadline to buy tickets is 12/13. Contact Peggy Lieb to purchase tickets. Ann Robinson will be entertaining with her beautiful music. The menu will be: Chicken Crepes, Salad, Rolls, Coffee or Tea, with dessert being their famous Pecan Ball. All ladies of the church are considered members of the Women's Fellowship and are encouraged to attend. Church Music Notes - As we move further into fall, there will also be an influx of music at First Presbyterian. Firstly, rehearsals for Hand Bell Choir are Wednesdays at 6 PM! We will be meeting in the Hand Bell room and rehearsing in the hallway just outside of there for the time being. Never played hand bells before? There isn't a better time to start than now! We'll be looking to play once in November and then again in December for the Christmas Season. Speaking of Christmas, wonderful things are going to be happening this Christmas Season. I'm very excited about the music that both the Chancel Choir and Handbell Choir will provide for the congregation. However, the big announcement is that we're planning something a little different for this year. On December 21st at 7:00 PM, First Presbyterian will be putting on a Christmas Celebration! This will be a service entirely devoted to the music of the Christmas Season and will feature the Church s Chancel Choir, and Hand Bell Choir. There will also be two quartets: Eclipse (my quartet that sang Reformation Sunday) & The Con Men and maybe more. Part of what is going to make this Christmas Celebration so wonderful that is we are accepting volunteers for our Christmas Choir. If you've wanted to sing in the choir but don't want to devote the entire year to it, come and sing on the 21st. All we'll ask is a few rehearsals in the weeks leading up to Christmas, starting in November 7pm. Rehearsals for the Christmas Celebration will be the first 30 minutes of regular rehearsal. Also, if you know of people in the area, whether they be First Pres members or not, that would be interested, let them know! Another great aspect of this is that it will very much be a community event and an outreach to those that may not always hear the wonderful message of the Christmas Gospel Story. Now, let's be clear: This is NOT replacing Christmas Eve Candlelight Service! This is another service in addition to that one. Finally, if you aren't interested in singing or performing for this wonderful event, that's fine! However, please come and enjoy all the wonderful music that our congregation has to offer. If you have any questions and/or concerns, feel free to contact me at zmarquart@gmail.com or Zac Marquart, Choir Director

JOHN AND GWEN HASPELS As many of you already know, our long time missionaries, John and Gwen Haspels were seriously injured on October 1 when attacked by armed bandits on a rural road in Ethiopia. John drove them to a hospital in Aman, Ethiopia, a four hour drive from the area where they were attacked. Since then, they have been air transported to a wellequipped hospital in South Africa. Both have had several surgeries. John is out of the hospital and staying at a guesthouse the family has located. Gwen s most recent surgery was a nine hour surgery, which included a skin graph to her face. She will require reconstruction surgery to her face, removal of her feeding tube and tracheostomy. There is a desire to transfer them back to the United States, but Gwen need to be stable, and the medical transport would be very costly. The Haspels and their family have confidence in their doctors and the hospital in South Africa. Most of all they have every confidence in the Great Physician. If you would like to send them a card, you may address it to: John and Gwen Haspels C/O Presbyterian World Missions 100 Witherspoon Louisville, KY We also need to keep them in prayer every day as they recover and expect additional surgery. You may also wish to follow the details of their ordeal and progress at dmission/. Since not all of their medical costs will be cover by insurance, a special account has been established. If you feel led to contribute to their unmet financial needs, send a check to Presbyterian World Missions P.O. Box Pittsburgh, PA Designate the check to: Extra Commitment Account #E Rev. John and Gwenyth Haspels Sending and Support. The Haspels have been supported by our church for many years and have visited us at least twice in that time. Their mission is to the Baale People Group in Ethiopia, and over 1000 people were at the airport in Ethiopia when the Haspels were flown to South Africa. This is a testimony to the work the Haspels have been doing in Ethiopia. They really demonstrate what it means to be a bush missionary. With the Knudson s Be sure to set aside Sunday, November 2 to enjoy breakfast provided by friends and members of the Evangelism and Outreach Committee beginning at 9:00 a.m. At approximately 9:30, our guests Paul and Christy Knudson of Serving in Mission will share their work with SIM in Bolivia. Our guests of honor were Shannon, Lora and Diana. Michelle and Andrea were not able to attend. Gifts were given not only to our new mommies, but we also accepted gift donations for Heartbeats of Licking County. Once again, God's love shined through the generosity of our church. We collected diapers, wipes, clothes, bottles, and a large assortment of other baby items for Heartbeats to use as they support pregnant women and new mothers in our community.
