FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2015 O Little Town of Bethlehem There is a Christmas song that says of Bethlehem: "Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light." Bethlehem is a suburb of Jerusalem. Its main tourist attraction in the time of Jesus was that it was the birthplace of David. Though today it has many modern homes and buildings, you can still see that it is part of "the hill country...of Judah." (Lk 1:39) It is not too far from En Kerem, where John the Baptist was born, and apparently where today's Gospel takes place. We see in the Gospel reading today how Elizabeth and her unborn child rejoiced at the news of Jesus' coming birth. The story implies that Mary went to see Elizabeth as soon as the angel told her about Jesus. Maybe it was easier to tell her cousin, who was also with child, than her fiancé. I would think that talking about it made this miracle more real. I know that talking about my faith makes it more real to me. Jesus is the "everlasting Light" mentioned in the song. That light shines today, not just in Bethlehem, but everywhere that his followers bring it. When we console someone who is mourning, that light shines. When we offer to help someone in need, it shines brighter. When we forgive someone who hurt us, the light is burning. When we offer to sponsor a candidate in the RCIA, the light grows. When we teach a child how to pray, it shines even brighter. Our dark streets need the everlasting Light today as much as they did 2000 years ago. Today we remember how Mary and Elizabeth shared their faith in God. They did so much like we do today. Mary could not see her unborn son yet, but helped Elizabeth to believe by her words. Jesus, who seems to be invisible today, is seen in the shared faith of those who bring Him into the world by their words and actions. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Since a Mass Stipend is truly an offering, the amount is entirely up to the individual scheduling the intention. The only insight we can offer is that the average stipend is approximately $10.00 per scheduled Mass. The offering is truly up to you. Consideration: A Mass stipend is not required, rather it is a customary offering to the Priest. The spiritual value is in the Mass itself. The inability to offer a stipend should never deter someone from scheduling a Mass. Gathered in the presence of Christ, we sing uncomplicated repetitive songs, uncluttered by too many words allowing the mystery of God to become tangible through the beauty of simplicity. Join us at the Parish of St. Eugene as we gather January 8th, from 7:00-8:00pm in the All Saints chapel. Call Megan, or Janet, for more details. WORKSHOPS ON POPE FRANCIS ENCYCLICAL LAUDATO SI ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. JUST COME! Join us on Friday, Feb. 12, from either 1 to 2:30pm or 7 to 8:30pm (same presentation given twice) in the Social Hall of St. Eugene for an overview of Pope Francis papal encyclical, Laudato Si On Care For Our Common Home. Our speaker, Dr. Catherine Wright, will discuss why Pope Francis wrote this encyclical and the idea that faith and science need to be in dialog. The purpose is to give participants an overview of the letter, to discuss how this document is a part of Catholic Social Teaching, and that we are the who that the letter is inviting to ecological conversion. Come learn what all the fuss and excitement is about. There will be a question/answer period following the presentation. For more information, please contact Cynthia Gibbs at or cynthia@gibbsco.com Catherine Wright, Ph.D., received her B.Sc. in Zoology and B.Ed. from the University of Toronto and her doctorate from Regis College (Toronto School of Theology). During her doctoral program, she was a contributor to and participant in the Elliot Allen Institute for Theology and Ecology. Kids from 4 years to 8 th grade are welcomed to participate. Those kids who are interested in leading a hymn or a Mass part will be given the opportunity to do so, usually in pairs. I will be distributing the music in booklet form with the text only. I am happy to sing melodies into one s smart phone, if you feel your child needs to have that listening aid. For those that read music, I can lend you a hymnal with which to practice. In addition to singing, I have various percussive instruments for the children to play on specific songs. Ms. Valerie accompanies on piano. We have two rehearsals prior to Christmas and a warmup before the Mass on Christmas Eve. It is optimal for the child to attend both rehearsals but if they can make only one, they are still most welcome to participate. Everyone needs to be at the warm-up on Christmas Eve. Here is the schedule for this year. Warm-up: Thursday, December 24 from 2:45 to 3:30 pm in the church, with picture opportunity when all are in place. Bathroom break: 3:30 to 3:40 pm In place in choir area: 3:40 pm Begin prelude music: 3:45 pm Mass begins: 4:00 pm I hope that those of you who have participated in the past, will be able to again this year and that many of you who have not yet been a part, will consider joining with us to celebrate the Baby Jesus birthday. Just show up at one or both of the rehearsals, no need to contact me unless you have questions. Christmas magic happens when our children lift their voices in song for this holy celebration! Blessings, Ms. Carole; Carole Marrs -Music Director Help Asheville Catholic School! Your Christmas Shopping Can Help ACS! This Advent/Christmas season offers a great opportunity to help students at Asheville Catholic. Did you know that many stores will apply a percentage of your purchase to Asheville Catholic? Just ask at check out! This includes online purchases. For example, when purchasing from Office Max/Office Depot, at check out you can select our school to receive 5% of you purchase, AND this doesn't increase the cost of your item! So, since you're going to be shopping anyway, why not help ACS in the process! SAVE THE DATE FOR A CONCERT & XLT WITH PJ ANDERSON JANUARY 10, 2016 AT 5:30 PM Happy Advent! SEY SUMMER CAMP SEY will be heading to the Nashville, TN camp the week of June 19-25, 2016! Sign up now if you plan on attending this camp. A $90.00 (non-refundable) deposit due at sign-up! I'd like to thank all who contributed food items or made cash donations to the Prison Ministry Christmas bags this year. Your generosity brings some holiday cheer to the men at Craggy Prison-Minimum Custody Unit and is an expression of God's love and Christian charity. Particular thanks go to Hamp Hampton for his generous donations, Mary Bunner, my husband Robin, Tracy Jedd, and Andrea Robles Leon for their assistance with packing bags and making cards. I could not do this without your support and I am truly proud to be a member of this wonderful faith community at St. Eugene. The men and I are very grateful that you have thought of them, especially at this time of year. Thank you and Merry Christmas, Carol Jordan.

7 December 20, 2015 Saint Eugene Catholic Church 7 THINKING OF JOINING THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? Our weekly sessions for R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) have begun. Sessions will take place on Sundays, in the parish parlor, from 9:40 to 10:40am. The journey of faith begins with questions - your questions. What do Catholics believe? How does Catholicism fit in with other faith traditions? The process begins with an inquiry period when questions lead to exploration. Please join us for a fun-filled, faith-filled, Spirit-filled gathering. If you would like to begin this journey of faith, please call our parish office and provide your contact information. (Name, phone number, address, etc.). A member of the RCIA team will contact you with further information. We will look forward to meeting you and answering your questions. Deacon Mike Zboyovski/ , ext. 20. LOST AND FOUND All items found on our church grounds can be found in our Lost & Found section located at the Coat Rack in the Social Hall not in the church office. You may search this area Monday-Friday 9am-4pm or when the church is open. All items not collected by the end of each month will be donated to Catholic Charities. NOTE: Please be aware that our bulletin is posted on our website; therefore, any information in the bulletin is out there in cyberspace, accessible to anyone. Please let the office know if this is an issue for you. ST. EUGENE'S IN THE LOOP! Yes, our church is now looped! If you have hearing aids with t-coils, please turn them on. If you have a hearing loss, please ask for a Receiver from one of the Greeters/Ushers before you go into the Sanctuary. We want everyone to hear the Word! HOSPITAL ADMISSION OR EXTENDED STAY AT HOME: We would encourage you to celebrate the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick prior to your admission or extended convalescence. Please give us a call to arrange a time and date. Also, you may be unaware that hospitals, by law, will not automatically inform us of your presence there - even if you state your religious affiliation as Catholic on an entrance form. Whether you are hospitalized, recuperating, or simply unable to attend parish services, you or your family member is required to inform us as to your desire for visitation and/or reception of Communion. We will be happy to arrange visitations and reception of Communion once the parish office is notified regarding your wishes. It is our most sincere desire to keep our parish family connected and included, especially in times of dealing with health and recovery issues. A simple call or is all it takes Celebration of Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: or to arrange a hospital or home visitation and communion: Deacon Mike ext. 20 or deaconmike@steugene.org
