THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 26, 2014 The Diamond Rule When I hear the line from the first reading about not molesting or oppressing an alien, I think of the movie E.T., in which the children help the extraterrestrial just because he needs help. What the reading calls aliens are immigrants or newcomers. They lived among the Hebrews but were not Jews themselves. The Lord reminds the people that they were once aliens themselves. They should not make the same mistake the Egyptians did when they mistreated the Israelites. God uses the same logic in commanding them to take care of widows and orphans. Treat them like family, or else your own wives and children will be in the same situation. Immigrants, widows, orphans, borrowers--all must be treated with compassion. The reason for such compassion should be deeper than just fear of punishment. "Do to others as you would have them do to you," Jesus said (Luke 6:31). Today's Gospel has a similar saying: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39). Jesus called this the second commandment. The first is to love God wholly and completely, heart, mind, and soul. If the second commandment is the Golden Rule, the first might be called the Diamond Rule. If you think about it, in order to keep the first commandment, you have to be keeping the second as well. Jesus said that whatever you do for the poor, the homeless, the sick, or prisoners, you do for Him (Matthew 25:31-46). Mother Teresa could see Jesus in the poorest of the poor. Jesus Himself showed compassion even to sinners. We can't really say we love God if we don't love the people God created. So that gives us two reasons to love our neighbor. First, because God lives in other people, so loving God means loving God wherever God is found. Second, God loves them, so if we are to be holy, we must be like God. What does that mean? Remember the saying that "charity begins at home"? That is only true because it is easier to love family and friends, but charity doesn't end there. If we truly love God, we will extend our charity to those outside our homes. People are probably still rebuilding after the earthquakes in Japan, tornadoes in America, floods in India, and other disasters, and every city has some kind of homeless shelters. You say you love God? Let's see you love your neighbor. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Since a Mass Stipend is truly an offering, the amount is entirely up to the individual scheduling the intention. The only insight we can offer is that the average stipend is approximately $10.00 per scheduled Mass. The offering is truly up to you. Consideration: A Mass stipend is not required, rather it is a customary offering to the Priest. The spiritual value is in the Mass itself. The inability to offer a stipend should never deter someone from scheduling a Mass. 3 October 26, 2014 Saint Eugene Catholic Church 3 Dear Parishioners, Greetings and Peace! I would like to write this week about stewardship of our parish resources. Some time ago, it was determined that we as a parish community would tithe our weekly offertory. We have kept up this honorable parish tradition. We are so blessed in the parish and we have the obligation to help serve the local community. Two of the requirements that we try to stick to are that the organization that we support with a tithe be local and that the amount we can share is meaningful and has a great impact. I am happy to report that I have gone through the past fiscal quarter starting July 1 st and the following organizations will be receiving gifts from St. Eugene: Catholic Committee of Appalachia, ABCCM, All Souls Counseling Center, ARC of Buncombe County, Arts for Life, Asheville Catholic School Scholarships, Asheville Pregnancy Support Services, Building Bridges, Buncombe Co Medical Society Life Skills Program, Care Partners Hospice, Caring for Children, Catholic Charities, Center for Participatory Change, Child Abuse Prevention Services and Habitat for Humanity. It is indeed a powerful feeling to know that your donations to St. Eugene not only serve our local parish needs, but extend far beyond that as well! God Bless, Father Pat KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The St. Eugene Knights of Columbus want to thank the parishioners and visitors of St. Eugene for their generosity in donating $ at our pancake Breakfast on October 12. Your donations will be supporting the St. Eugene Respect Life Commission and Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Western North Carolina. The Knights will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner in the Social Hall on Saturday, November 8, after the 5:30pm Mass. Tickets will be available after all Masses the weekends of October and November 1-2. Cost will be $8 per person, $15 per couple, $5 for children (4 11 years old), and maximum $25 per family. Mark your calendars for this event. If you are a Catholic man, 18 years of age or older, and would like more information about the Knights of Columbus, please contact Tom Kotz at or Mike Richardson at ASHEVILLE CATHOLIC SCHOOL INGLES/FRESH MARKET GIFT CARD SALES Asheville Catholic School will be available next weekend following all Masses to sell Ingles and Fresh Market gift cards. Both of these neighborhood stores generously donate 5% of the card's value to our school. We appreciate the support of St. Eugene's and thank you for assisting in the fundraising efforts of ACS. CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY Please Support Catholic Campus Ministry! It's CCM raffle time again. Please support this vital ministry to college students in the Asheville area. Tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100. Two chances to win with each ticket! First prize $2, Second prize $1, Students will also be selling hand-made items made by students and friends of campus ministry. Please come and see us after all the Masses, October 25 & 26. ASHEVILLE AREA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY S 16 TH INTERFAITH HOUSE It is that time of year again where faith communities around Asheville come together to build a safe and affordable house for a needy family. The house will be built beginning on October 22 and ending on December 20. St Eugene has committed to have volunteers on the job site for 10 days during that time. There are even some Saturdays for those that cannot make it during the week. So join up with some fellow parishioners to experience something very rewarding. Meet the family chosen to buy this house with a zero percent loan after they perform 200 sweat-equity hours per every adult to live in the house. As we say it is a hand up not a hand out. For more information please contact Tim Wrinn at timwrinn@aol.com or

Our weekly sessions for R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) have begun. Sessions will take place on Sundays, in the parish parlor, from 9:40 to 10:40am. The journey of faith begins with questions - your questions. What do Catholics believe? How does Catholicism fit in with other faith traditions? The process begins with an inquiry period when questions lead to exploration. Please join us for a fun-filled, faith-filled, Spirit-filled gathering. If you would like to begin this journey of faith, please call our parish office and provide your contact information. (Name, phone number, address, etc.).
