Caution: Spirit at Work PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018 If Pentecost celebrates the gifts of the Spirit, it can tempt us to separate the Spirit from the Father and Jesus. Sometimes we think of the Father as the God of the Old Testament, Jesus as center of New Testament, and the Spirit as God of the present age, almost as if the Father and Jesus were enjoying their retirement. Actually, all three persons share one God-life. Instead of three gods debating the fate of the universe, we have one God who is over all and in all. The Spirit has been active in all ages. The prophets were empowered by the Spirit to proclaim God's word to Israel. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit led Jesus into the desert at the beginning of His ministry. (Search the word "spirit" in the four Gospels and it appears 75 times.) Jesus was filled with the Spirit as He preached and worked miracles. Then at Pentecost the disciples were filled with the Spirit. So what about Pentecost? It is really about using our gifts and sharing the good news. The Spirit gives us the power, courage, and energy to do this. The Spirit's gifts are meant to be shared. The prophets could not help proclaim God's message. Jesus shared all He knew with His disciples. The disciples went out to the world to spread the news of Jesus' death and resurrection. So we, too, are given gifts to be shared. The greatest gift we have been given is the news of our salvation. This feast reminds us to share that with others. We may do that by example, as when we worship together, forgive others, give to the poor or help someone in need. We can also share that news by teaching our children about God and His love for them, teaching them to pray, or sharing our faith with other adults. As we come to realize how much God has done for us and how close He is to us, we will want to share that with others. Obviously, we can't make everyone believe in Jesus. For Baptism, at least two months and for Marriage, at least six months notice is required. Thank you! Please call Parish Office. MASS INTENTIONS If you would like to dedicate a Mass for someone, it may be scheduled either by stopping by the parish office or calling. Since a Mass Stipend is truly an offering, the amount is entirely up to the individual scheduling the intention. The only insight we can offer is that the average stipend is approximately $10.00 per scheduled Mass. The offering is truly up to you. Consideration: A Mass stipend is not required, rather it is a customary offering to the Priest. The spiritual value is in the Mass itself. The inability to offer a stipend should never deter someone from scheduling a Mass. 3 May 20, 2018 Saint Eugene Catholic Church 3 ROSARY PRIOR TO SATURDAY, 5:30 MASS The Knights of Columbus will lead the Parish in praying the Rosary next Saturday, May 26, beginning at 5:00 PM. Next weekend, we observe Memorial Day. Although many celebrate this weekend as the unofficial start of summer, we must remember in our prayers those men and women who have fallen and died in defense of our country, those whose lives were forever changed after they served and came home, those serving today, and for their families. We will be celebrating Father s Day on June 17. We will pray for all fathers, fathers-to-be, men who have or had a fatherly relationship with someone, and for the repose of the souls of all deceased fathers. We will also include Pope Francis intention for June: That social networks may work towards that inclusiveness which respects others for their differences.. We hope you can join us to come together in prayer and unity. EUGENE S PRESCHOOL We are excited to announce St. Eugene s Preschool beginning in the school year! We offer a 1s and 2s classroom and a Preschool classroom for children turning 3 before the beginning of the school year. Our program runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Our 1s and 2s program offers an opportunity for children to play, learn, explore, and gain valuable social skills in a structured, small-group environment. We include creative activities, music, reading time, and outdoor play to encourage children to develop and explore self-expression through art, language, and social relationships. Our preschool will be taught by Becky Uhler (an ACS parent) who holds a master s degree and has 8 years of teaching experience. The preschool classroom will be a very nurturing environment to help children grow socially, emotionally, and academically. The classroom will allow students to explore, be creative, and develop their interests through the use of developmentally appropriate centers, daily morning meetings, circle time, and by creating a positive atmosphere of classroom community. Students will learn independent skills such as putting on shoes and jackets and academic skills such as phonemic awareness skills, rich literacy experiences, letter recognition, and math skills. Sessions will take place on Sundays, in the parish parlor, from 9:40 to 10:40am. The journey of faith begins with questions - your questions. What do Catholics believe? How does Catholicism fit in with other faith traditions? The process begins with an inquiry period when questions lead to exploration. Please join us for a fun-filled, faith-filled, Spirit-filled gathering. If you would like to begin this journey of faith, please call our parish office and provide your contact information. Also, you may be unaware that hospitals, by law, will not automatically inform us of your presence there - even if you state your religious affiliation as Catholic on an entrance form. Whether you are hospitalized, recuperating, or simply unable to attend parish services, you or your family member is required to inform us as to your desire for visitation and/or reception of Communion. We will be happy to arrange visitations and reception of Communion once the parish office is notified regarding your wishes. It is our most sincere desire to keep our parish family connected and included, especially in times of dealing with health and recovery issues. A simple call or is all it takes.
