1 September 2012 Crossroads Emmaus and Chrysalis of Eastern Pennsylvania From Our Community LD It is Labor Day weekend as I write to you. As the summer concludes, the Emmaus community leadership is working to be prepared for the fall walks in October, and beginning the process for the spring walks. We hope you have these events on your calendars. The community accomplishes its goal of building Christian leaders when many give of their time. For me, this month is one of change. After more than 2 years of my house of 25 years being for sale, it seems that finally I will be moving. It is a great relief to be able to downsize from a home of 4-5 bedrooms on more than an acre to a townhouse in Collegeville. However, there are also mixed feelings as I leave the home where I raised my children, the community where I have had so many good friends in my local church family. As I think back, the time has been one of perseverance as so many came through to see the house, but decided that another better suited their needs. It has been a time of setting priorities as I sort and discard, as I create to-do lists of tasks that must be completed prior to moving day. I think too of the Body of Christ, as Emmaus friends have continued to support and help me the men who came & made repairs; those who provided prayer support and allowed me to vent when my frustration levels increased. How different it would have been if I had experienced these last 2-plus years without the Walk to Emmaus. I know that the on-going impact of participating increases my trust that God is actively working in the process. I just went online to find the wording for a verse in my mind. Instead I found that BibleGateway.com displayed a verse for the day. This is what the LORD says - your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. 3 Prayer Support for the 54th Walk to Emmaus Men - October 12-14, 2012 Women - October 19-21, 2012 Talks for the 54th Walks If you have participated in a Walk to Emmaus or Chrysalis weekend, you have experienced the power of the prayer support that undergirds the weekend. The Board of Directors encourages you to be part of the upcoming Walks by being in prayer in support for those participating. You may commit to the 72 Hour Prayer Vigil by signing up on the Prayer Vigil website -- GetComm.phtml. Those signing up through this site will be listed on the Prayer Wheel that is shared with the Pilgrims and hung on the conference room wall during the weekend. By signing up in this way, you commit to prayer at a specific time, but you may be at any location: your home, your work, etc. A second option for prayer support would be for you to come to Camp Innabah, during the Walk program hours. Most specifically, we are looking for friends and family to come and pray with speakers before they enter the conference room, and pray for the speakers and the Pilgrims during the speaker s talk. You would arrive prior to the time listed above and quietly enter the Community Prayer Chapel in Covenant Lodge (the building at the end of the gravel parking lot). After all the Pilgrims have returned to the Conference Room, a member of the Outside Servant Team will come to get you, and you will have the opportunity to join with the speaker in Bethany Chapel for a brief time of prayer. You may then continue to be in prayer during the talk, and pray again with the speaker after the talk is completed. Please register with the Outside Servant Team before you come to Innabah to pray, so they know to come to get you at Covenant Lodge. Please contact the Outside Servant Team Leaders: Wayne Wylie for the Men's Walk or wylieww@verizon.net, Jan Smith for the Women's Walk or Jan8287@aol.com) Men Women Friday 9:00 am Priority Matt Greener Elysa Dickenson 10:55am Prevenient Grace Bev Andrews Cindy Babiak 1:35 pm Priesthood of All Believers Ed Hedemark Mary Wilson 2:55 pm Justifying Grace Max Jaouen Eric Ressler 6:25pm Life of Piety Tim Landis Rosie Woodhouse Saturday 8:40 am Growth Through Study Bruce Clydesdale Bev Lawless 10:00 am Means of Grace Rick Andrews Joan Trout 2:45 pm Christian Action Alex Massengale Donna Craft 4:15 pm Obstacles to Grace Max Jaouen Cindy Babiak 6:55 pm Discipleship Alan Donaldson Cindy Carpenter Sunday 9:15 am Changing Our World Dave Ryan Sally Allerheiligen 10:15 am Sanctifying Grace Bev Andrews Eric Ressler 11:20 am Body of Christ Alex Wirth Tracy Fasick 1:10 pm Perseverance Peter Noll Louise Hine 2:10 pm Fourth Day Scott Long Cheryl vanlierop Day Servants Another way that you can support the Walks is to serve as a Day Servant. Day Servants come to Innabah for all or part of a day to help serve meals, and assist the Outside Servant Team in whatever way they need help. Often Day Servants combine both Day Servant service and the prayer mentioned in the article above in the same visit. To serve as a Day Servant, please register with the Outside Servant Team Leaders at the contact information above. Page 3

4 I know that often I take God s presence and guidance for granted. However, there are also those times when I am in total awe of the amazing love of our Lord for each of us, of the assurance that God knows what is best and wants to guide us. The question is are we open to the guidance? Where is God calling you to make a change? Nancy Guenther community lay director 19th Walk to Emmaus Emmaus Community Board of Directors The Board of Directors has the task of overseeing the mission of the Walk to Emmaus in the local community. Six times a year we meet to address the business and planning for the community. We have 2 additional meetings when the priority is prayerfully to select the leadership for the walks. Board members serve 3-year terms with the opportunity to serve 2 consecutive terms. Each position on the board has responsibilities for a component of the community events. These include: Pre-Emmaus chair who has the task of organizing the team selection process and receiving both applications for team and feedback about team. Registrar who receives pilgrim applications from sponsors and communicates with the team concerning those who will be participating in the upcoming walks. Post-Emmaus chair who organizes events such as the 4th Day Workshop and the annual picnic. Weekend Chair who works with the weekend leadership to provide the 3-day experience and maintains the documentation that team members use. We have additional members who fill general organization responsibilities as secretary, treasurer, chair of the board, etc. Each year we need individuals to step forward and accept these responsibilities. Nomination forms are available on the community website We ask that you prayerfully consider participating. Elections occur each fall at the Women s weekend Candlelight. The above description is for laity who are part of the community, but we need clergy members on the board as well. Any interested clergy should contact Rick Andrews (revric@aol.com). From Page 1 - Community LD Encouragement From Our Community Spiritual Director And he said to them, What are you discussing with each other while you walk along? They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days? Luke 24:17-18 These well known words from Luke all have a special meaning to us as we remember our Walk to Emmaus and know a new group of pilgrims will arrive on Thursday night and begin their walk. So why these words in this meditation as we prepare for send off, candlelight and then closing? Because we need to be reminded, in the midst of our busy lives, of the question of Cleopas Are you the only stranger...? The talk on Fourth Day reminds us that, while we are on retreat, it is easy to keep our eyes on Jesus and to turn our hearts and minds over to him as well. But then we return to the everyday life that we have always had. It is easy to get caught up in the activities of life, with all of its demands and challenges. We can be so busy that we forget who we are and to whom we belong. We can be in midst of something and someone will ask us a question - and all of sudden we are there. We are there on the road to Emmaus and we do not see him. We get so worried, so caught up in earning a living, that the relationship we have been given seems so far away almost to the point of being unreal. The pilgrims coming to the upcoming walks are looking, seeking, longing for a new way of seeing, feeling, knowing God. And I would submit that many of them are there because of you. You were there when they asked a question, or said something, that made you stop and think, Here is someone who is wanting to know God in a deeper and richer way. So, as we either bring pilgrims that we are sponsoring, or attend any of the events during the upcoming Walks, may we not only remember the words of Jesus but also act upon them by reconnecting with the joy of knowing that Jesus walks with us and with them. May we have the eyes to see, the hearts to believe, and the minds to know and share that Jesus is always there for us all. They will know we are Christians by our love. Then he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the To Page 5 - Community SD Page 4

5 Sponsorship Depends on You Wasn t your Walk to Emmaus or Chrysalis Flight one of the best gifts that you have ever received? Your help is needed to share that gift with a man or young man on a future Emmaus Walk or Chrysalis Flight. Our recent Men s Walks and Boy s Chrysalis Flights have been held with less than the number of participants recommended by the International Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis Office. Our Women s Walks and Girl s Flights have been nearly at capacity or full, which is fantastic, but several of the Men s Walks and Boy s Chrysalis Flights have been in danger of being cancelled due to low numbers of participants. Your Emmaus and Chrysalis Community needs your help. We need you to re-engage with the mission and ministry of the Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis and prayerfully consider who you can sponsor on a future Walk or Flight. As a previous Pilgrim on a Walk or a Butterfly on a Flight, you know the joy, excitement, and growth as a Christian that you felt when you went on your Walk or Flight. Please consider sharing that experience with a man, woman, boy, or girl, who you know by sponsoring them now. After prayerfully considering who you can sponsor, the necessary sponsorship and registration forms can be found on our Crossroads Community web site under the Team and Pilgrim Applications link: A helpful checklist for Sponsorship can also be found on this web site. Someone you know will have their life changed now, and for all eternity, through your sponsorship of them on an Emmaus Walk or Chrysalis Flight. Please make the commitment to start the process for sponsoring someone now! The person whom you sponsor will thank you, and the Crossroads Emmaus and Chrysalis Community thanks you! Mike Kniley, Assistant Community Lay Director, Crossroads Walk to Emmaus Please Send Us Your Address If you would be willing to receive future Rooster Calls via instead of postal mail, please send an to mkniley@comcast.net giving permission to send the Rooster Calls to you via and including the address that should be used to the Rooster Calls. Crossroads Emmaus / Chrysalis Website: Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?
