1 Crossroads Emmaus and Chrysalis of Eastern Pennsylvania I Hello Emmaus Family ( That includes Face to Face and Chrysalis too) April 2018 Well, Curt has told me it's time to write an article for the Rooster Call, and wanting to avoid a stern look, and talking to, I better get typing. I always feel like I should write something profound and wise...then I remember it's ME behind the keyboard and laugh. I still think me getting elected to this position was a big practical joke The Lord played on all of us, but I digress Change! That's a terrifying word sometimes isn't it? It is for me. I like the routine of doing things the way I've always done them and the comfort that familiarity brings. Today my church's Pastor announced she will be retiring in just two short months Yikes, talk about change! My home church is about to go through a huge transformation. Now many of you deal with this on a semi-regular basis; but for my Presbyterian church, our pastors are not rotated out every few years like many other denominations. She has been with us for 42 Years! GAH! (runs around in circles screaming) So I sought Biblical guidance, and this scripture, which has popped up in my life several times this month, once again made an appearance: Isaiah 43:19 "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." Page 1

2 GOD HAS GOT THIS! (continued from page 1) Change is sometimes disguised as or accompanied by turmoil. Yesterday it was 80 degrees and sunny here, the breeze was mild and the day seemed perfect. Today I awoke to grey skies and 44 windy, rainy degrees...what happened? What happened is Spring is finally coming, cold and warm fronts are wrestling for control; and the result is crazy weather. It happens every time, but every year I forget and ask myself: "What s going on?" Eventually the seasons transition and the wind calms, the flowers bloom, and warm air stays. If my congregation puts it's faith in God's hands, where it belongs, the same will happen for my church; and a new beautiful season for us will begin. The same will happen for our Pastor. I am certain God has Wonderful things in store for her as she moves forward on her journey. Our community has also seen some pretty big changes over the last year, and there is still some work to do. Your Emmaus board members are some of the most intelligent, Spirit- filled servants of God I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Every board meeting is started with and full of prayer. Every one of them has an amazing love for this community and is committed to see it be the Instrument of The Lord it is intended to be. With the introduction of Face to Face, our community will be able to share this Agape gift with many people who would have otherwise not been able to participate. With the guidance of the International Emmaus office in Nashville, we Pray the decisions we make will Glorify God through this ministry and show the Love of Christ to all we encounter. I encourage all of you to participate in your local and community-wide events, we will do our best to keep you all in the loop and listen to your input as we go forward. I pray that whatever changes you are currently going through in your personal, professional, or spiritual lives, no matter how tumultuous they may seem, will also transform into a beautiful new Spring season for you. Step out of the boat, keeping your eyes focused on Christ, and you will surely not sink. Yours in Christ, Chuck Addis Lay Director Page 2

3 Rest vs Rest in the Lord? I often hear people say, no matter how much I sleep, I don t feel rested or no matter what I try, I can t shut my mind off and I couldn t tell you the last time I got a full night's sleep and, so common to all of us, I lie in bed staring at the ceiling contemplating something I should have done, or should be doing and, ultimately, find no rest. There have certainly been times in my life when I ve experienced these nights as well. It s so easy to become overwhelmed. We spend so much time worrying about finances, a loved one's health, relationships, kids or work. We can get so busy trying to meet everyone else s needs that we neglect our own basic needs. When we do have a moment to focus on our needs, we are often in the pursuit of physical or emotional rest; but we don t care for the needs of our soul. In Matthew 11:28, we hear the familiar verse, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Often, we stop there and think, Oh, man, that sounds good. I m weary from work; I m burdened by my schedule, my kids schedule, all the things that I do, my finances. We look at those words from a very literal point of view and say that we need rest from our burden. The physical rest is what we anticipate and hope for. We fail to look further at what Jesus is saying in verses 29 and 30, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. In our endless pursuit of rest from our daily life stresses, we forget to remember that only Jesus can give us rest for our souls. We may find physical rest when we retire or the kids grow up and move out, maybe even our emotional stress over money will end when we finally get our finances in order. But, we will never find true rest if we don t find rest in Jesus. No amount of physical or emotional rest can match the endless rest our souls receive in the Lord. 4 Zion UMC Greetings everyone, Face to Face April 2018 Face to Face is excitedly looking forward to Encounter #2. The team has started team meetings and preparing to meet new friends on May 10, The Encounter Pilgrims will be meeting on May, 10, May 15, May 19 and May at Zion UMC of Iona, th Ave. Lebanon, PA There are a number of ways you can help our Encounter: Prayers for the team as they prepare and as they give talks at team meetings and during the Encounter. Prayers for pilgrims, to experience their encounter with the risen Christ. Prayers for day workers to assist the outside team, or assist in preparing lunches or help in the other ways needed. Help in the Prayer Chapel, praying with speakers or for the needs of Pilgrims or others. Agape letters are always appreciated by pilgrims, including Face to Face pilgrims. Please consider writing letters to these pilgrims, encouraging them as they continue in their Next Days after their Encounter experience. Face to Face Candlelight will be on Saturday May 19, at Zion UMC of Iona at the above address. Community is asked to start gathering in the church sanctuary at about 1:30 PM. If you have never experienced candlelight in the daytime you are in for a treat. It is as moving for the Face to Face pilgrims as it was on your walk. It was decided to have the Candlelight on Saturday so that more of the community would be able to share in the pilgrims experience. You are also asked to share with the pilgrims in the closing celebration on Tuesday May 22 at Zion UMC of Iona at the above address. Please join in helping the Face to Face pilgrims have the experience of the community sharing in their encounter with our risen Lord and Savior. I hope to see you at Emmaus Candlelight on April 21 and 28, 2018 at Cedarville UMC. DeColores Mary Wilson Marygwilson318@outlook.com Page 4

6 A NOTE FROM A MEMBER OF THE BOARD Hello Crossroads, My name is Ed Hedemark. I went on the 42 nd walk. I worship at Calvary Bible Church in Wrightsville, PA and I sat at the table of Joseph. For those who don t know me, I am also a board member, which means I was part of the team that reviewed the community wide survey that went out recently. Hopefully, you had the chance to respond. Reading the responses was one of the most difficult things I have done in a long time. The Walk to Emmaus is a ministry that I love and am passionate about. It has benefited me personally through my walk, and it has given me the opportunity to witness God s love for others while serving on team. Many of the responses show that this ministry continues to be a blessing for those who go on a walk. There were also an unsettling number of responses that show this ministry has failed its objective in a number of ways. People have been let down on their walk and by the lack of community after their walk. There have also been disappointing experiences serving on team. The responses were anonymous so it is especially difficult to deal with some of the stories that were told. Some responses make me want to simply hug the person and tell them how sorry I am that we have failed them. Others are more like a big pill that needs to be swallowed. There is no point in us as a board, team, or community getting defensive about any of it. A clear and loud message has been sent. We have issues that need to be dealt with. I am happy to say that this is a board that I believe is ready to take on the issues that we are facing. There needs to be a passionate and intentional effort put out on many fronts to heal and correct the deficiencies that have built up over time. If you are reading this, and are passionate about making us the community we can be, there will be plenty of ways you can help. Call me or a board member that you feel comfortable with, and we will get you plugged in as we continue in the work that is ahead of us. I also feel there are survey responses that warrant a more personal conversation. Since the surveys were anonymous, I am unable to reach out to anyone in regards to responses. I would welcome and appreciate further discussion with anyone. I can be reached at As we ve been going through significant changes, we as a board have recognized the value of clear communication with the community. I m sure you will hear more in the future about the exciting ways we will be moving forward and fixing the issues at hand. Please have patience and grace in this time. Thank you and DeColores. 7 AGAPE Emmaus weekends will be here before we know it. (Men 4/19 22; Women 4/26-29) Consider now how you can impact the weekend. Most pilgrims remember the impact of receiving letters from family and friends on Sunday afternoon. You may remember the letters from other communities that were shared by the spiritual director on Friday afternoon. You may have noticed different items appearing during the weekend with the names of gatherings that provided them. However, there is an additional type that has declined significantly in our community in recent years that is the anonymous agape that individuals are encouraged to provide for all pilgrims. This may be small items like bookmarks, handmade crosses, beaded necklaces, pens, even glow sticks. Use your imagination to come up with other ideas. If it is something that could be placed on the dining room tables, or on the tables in the conference room, then enough items should be provided for both team and pilgrims. Agape from individuals may also be letters. These letters should be anonymous. They may be signed as from "a pilgrim of the xxst Walk", or as a "fellow member of the Body of Christ." Since these letters will likely be placed on beds during the walk, you would not want to share specific details, but you are encouraged to share that you are praying for the pilgrims, and the impact that the Walk has had on your life. Perhaps you would like to share a scripture verse that is significant to you. Letters written from the heart can have a powerful impact. If you would like to send a letter with your signature, then that letter will be included in a bag that goes home with the pilgrim to be read after the weekend is over. Any agape you provide should be at Innabah by Thursday evening. Delivery options include -- Giving it to a team member it will arrive early on Thursday and can be organized before the walk begins. If you attend send-off, you may quietly place it in a box that will be under the registration table. If you have agape, but have difficulty delivering it, then one option is to place a request for help on the Crossroads Emmaus community Facebook page. One way to support the spring weekends is to help serve meals to team and pilgrims. Sign up for Crossroads Emmaus meal servers 2018 ( ) today! Only individuals who are able to serve in the background and keep conversations with pilgrims to a minimum should sign-up 65th Walk Outside Team Page 7
