2 Page 2 Pastor s Ponderings As we look out our windows these days, we see that most of the trees have lost their leaves. Many of us have started raking or cleaning our lawns for the year, we ve mowed for the last time. And if we catch them at the right time, might see a flock of geese here and there starting to migrate south for the winter. The air is crisp and fresh. Fall has arrived, summer is now past, winter waits on the doorstep. We ve heard many people often try to describe fall as a time of dying. Yet, it is in the fall that nature puts on its greatest show of splendor. Plain green tree leaves turn to oranges, crimsons, and many shades of red. The beauty of the many fall colors is impressive and awesome. It s as if nature wants to announce that not even winter s coming will keep it from putting on a fall show of splendor as a reminder that spring and new life will come. If we look around we can see the many beautiful colors of fall. Similar to the ones described above. Although many of the trees had already lost their leaves, there were many which still had the bright fall colors. And what a sight that is. Each time I see these colors, I think about God and how this was His doing. How God was showing us the great splendor of His power and reminding us of how temporary life here on earth is. Our Lord Jesus said that he came that we might have life and have it abundantly. How often in the midst of daily life do we forget this promise? How often do we tend to look on the negative side of life rather than that positive? How often do we describe life as partly cloudy rather than partly sunny? As half empty instead of half full? Brothers and sisters in faith, the fall splendor of God s creation is a reminder to us that in the struggles of life is where we find our true color. It is in difficult situations when we have the opportunity to draw closer to God and we ll be able to see that God will give us all we need and so much more. He will give us not only what we need, but He ll even give us in excess! He not only gives green leaves to trees, but in them is the beauty of a multitude of colors. In us, God has placed and will continue to give us all we need for any and every situation. During the fall, when the colors change, everything seems to be in a sense of flux, in change. And it is so easy for us to become reflective this time of the year. For you see, fall is the moment of transition from one life to another. Everything is alive with possibilities. As the old disappears, something new is born. You can sense it in the air. Turn your heart to God and you will be able to enjoy and appreciate this time of change. Don t be upset about the passing away of things, rather, embrace the many possibilities God has set before us for the future. I invite and encourage each of you this fall to draw closer to your God who loved you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus to be our Savior. Take time each day to pray and read your Bibles to find God s comfort and peace in the midst of struggle. Make Sunday worship a regular part of your weekly routine and if at all possible, volunteer your time and energy to those ministries that you have a passion for and give generously as God has blessed you. But don t wait for a time of trouble or need to seek that close relationship with Jesus Christ; draw near to him today! Don t wait! Let him show you the beautiful colors that are in you that can attract others to meet your Savior. I challenge each of you to make this Thanksgiving a real time of giving God thanks for the many blessings bestowed upon you this past year. Even the little blessings. Round up your entire family and friends and come to worship and give thanks at our Thanksgiving Eve service at Bethany on Wednesday, November 25 th at 7:00 pm. Finally, enjoy the fall splendor of God s good creation. May it remind you of the splendor you are and can become through an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ! Then give God thanks for this!!! In God s beauty & splendor, Pastor Steve

Rodenmayer

Have we forgotten God? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us I peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole of the American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. -Abraham Lincoln, 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation
