2 Pastor s Perspective Imagine a church building that had signs on every door. These signs would not be on the outside, signs that you could read as you entered the church. These signs would be on the inside of each door and would say something like: Come to be equipped for ministry. And the last thing that you would read as you left the church building was a sign on the door that read, You are now entering your mission field. I believe that it would be a good idea to have such signs on every church door. It would be a reminder to each one of us of God s call to mission. The mission of Christ s Church begins in each one of our lives. Living our lives can be called ministry in daily life. It is the life that we live most of the 168 hours of the week. Worship on Sunday may only be an hour or so. The vast majority of living happens other than in our congregational life. Picture this kind of a week between a pastor and a congregation: On Sunday during worship the pastor leads the church in preaching, administering the sacraments, equipping people for daily work. During this time, congregational disciples assist the pastor in this work. On Monday through Saturday the people lead the church by being the church, sinner/saints, who are called to serve through their home life, work and community activities. During this time, the pastor assists congregational disciples in their work. Realistically, that is really what the pastor s job is: to equip the people for ministry, not to necessarily do all the ministry by him/herself. I can imagine many benefits from this vision of our life together: That congregation could not look at their pastor as the one who does their Christian living for them. That the pastor would not look at congregational disciples as people who were not as important as the pastor. The excitement for the week ahead could be astounding: entering their mission field, the congregational disciples would have a sense of purpose that would relate to their Christian lives. More than going through the motions, parents, employers, employees, neighbors and friends would all have a sense of serving God by serving other people. The mission field would be different for each congregation because the community, town, state, and people s abilities would each be different from church to church. A congregation s life would not be an end in itself but would be a life of equipping missionaries for their work. With this vision of the Church and ministry together good questions to ask might be: How can the congregation in its programming equip me to be a better missionary? What would be helpful to me in my daily life as parent, employee, etc.? Is there anything that we should quit doing because it does not fit our mission? Your assistant in your missionary work, Pastor Steve First Communion Training will be held on Sunday, October 11 th at 2:00 P.M. at First English and perhaps Friday, October 16 th at 6:30 P.M. or Saturday, October 17 th. 5 Faith Statements By Thomas Litzau I have been attending First English since I was three years old. Throughout my years of church and Sunday School I have realized what faith really means to me. I believe that faith means to believe and trust in God, that no matter where you go he will always be by your side. To have faith you need to have confidence in it. Faith has helped me because it builds a stronger connection with God. In life when I feel like I have hit rock bottom I feel like I lose faith, but God gives us the gift to have faith in Him. God gives everybody a chance to have faith in Him. Not everybody meets His expectations, and if they don t then He forgives them. To be honest, I didn t always love waking up on a Sunday morning to go to church or Sunday School, but as years went on I started to understand the more advanced suff about the Bible and that has helped my faith to be at where it it today. In seventh grade I was finally old enough to go to LYO. LYO is a youth group you go to after ou get done with Sunday School for 7th through 12th graders, to bond through Christ and build faith. I believe that Jesus Christ lived and walked on this very earth, so it s easy to believe in Him, because I know what happened and all the miracles He made. Faith is the tricky thing, you have to believe in God the creator because there is no proven records. It completely relies on your faith and trust in God. Now I want to keep coming to church to complete my faith journey here at First English. Thank you By Zach Floyd My journey for faith has been reassured by the verse of Joshua 1:0 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. The meaning of faith to me means you can trust someone or something even if you don t see them in person. Such as God, I can t necessarily see Him, but I know I can always trust Him no matter what the situation is and I know he is there in hard times I feel like I can sense Him in my presence to do the right thing. God has helped with my faith, with hard times in my life. God has been there for me because in those hard times I felt like He could help me with my problem and make me a better person by the end of the situation and gain more wisdom out of the problem. I started to gain my faith when I had a bad feeling about a tree, so I moved out of the way and shortly after that the tree fell right where I had been standing and when that happened I knew that God was watching over me. My faith was really reassured when I heard about the story of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. At that point of the story I always knew I could trust Him because He was willing to die just for us even though we make many mistakes. I have also gained much of my faith from the people I know, such as my family, because they were the ones that started to bring me to church and helped me start my faith with God. I would also like to say thank you to my family for always being there for me and helping our entire family out when we needed it the most. I would also like to say thank you to my mentor Barb Burkman because we have had some very good conversations about our faith with God and she has really taught me a lot about faith as well and how God has helped her in some tough situations. By Mason Hotakainen Philippians 4:3 reads I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Christ gives us the strength to carry out daily tasks. He gives us strength to get through hard times, good times, and stressful times. Every moment and every second of every single day He gives us the strength to get through our day. Christ gives us strength not so we can get what we want but so we can be thoroughly satisfied with our lives. My faith began when my mom started bringing me to church when I was younger. She believed having Jesus in my life is a necessity as it should be in everybody s life. Church is where you go to learn to live a life greater and Godlier than the one you have been living. My mom taught me the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep prayer and would say it with me almost every night before bed along with my bedtime prayers. My earliest years of church and Sunday School were just the beginning of my journey with Christ. My grandpa, Kenny, definitely inspired my faith as he really pushed my mom to get me baptized and confirmed. My faith really began to grow when my grandpa passed away. His passing was hard to understand for me at the young age I was at so I turned to God for comfort. In turning to our Father I realized that though my grandpa is dearly missed here, he is needed for bigger and better things in heaven. I also learned that God s plans for us are greater than any we have for ourselves. My faith is important to me because faith gives me a standard to live by. Having faith in God gives me a much closer relationship with Him. Though my confirmation journey is over I will still continue to grow in my faith and relationship with God. In doing so I will continue to attend church regularly, listening and learning from our pastors sermons and all the lessons they give. Attending our church s youth group and worshipping with my friends is one way I have strived to be the best Christian I can be and I will continue to do so. I will continue to show my faith through my actions, words and deeds and live the way God would want me to until He calls me to be with Him through eternal life. Ruby s Pantry next distribution is Saturday, October 17, Registration is at 9:00 A.M. at First English Lutheran Church and distribution is at 10:00 A.M. at the Catholic Church. If you are interested in volunteering please be at the Catholic Church around 8:30 A.M.

6 Fellowship, Preparedness and Christians Helping Those in Need You can t turn on any news today without seeing some serious and alarming scenarios our world is facing. How much time have you spent worrying about the future? What is the condition of your faith? In a crisis, are you able to take care of your basic needs? If someone came to your door and was hungry, poorly clothed, and hopeless, would you know what to do? Would you have the means to respond? These are just a few questions people are asking or being asked. I was recently invited to a neighborhood meeting with some Christians that live near me. These were the questions we asked ourselves that evening. Recently, I asked how many were concerned about the future just before praying in a service. We spent a small amount of our prayer time that day asking the Lord to give us wisdom, comfort, and whatever else we may need in the event of tragedy or crisis. Christian fellowship, to which any person should be welcomed, could provide so much of what we need. So what is Christian fellowship? Well, it s like any type of getting together accept we invite Christ. Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them. and S T E P S James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. We eat, talk, pray, confess, and we see the Lord working in our midst. That s normal Christianity. Do you experience this on a regular basis? One note on confession. Since we practice confession in our worship services, do we need additional confession? Well, in a group of two or three you could share a struggle, a hurt, a habit and get encouragement and prayer. Remember Jesus said, these come out only by prayer. Some things in life cannot be overcome any other way than having someone pray for you. This next part is perhaps the hard part of this article. What is preparedness? In a time when there are so many voices-media, religious groups, the Bible, education, and financial experts trying to give us a message, how do you find truth? How do you plan? This is where we might find that we don t know our Scripture. Jesus made it clear trials, adversity, and even martyrdom are the normal Christian life for a disciple, no matter the day in age we live. We have indeed been so blessed in our time that we ve come to think those things only happen in other parts of the world. Pastor Jim, this sound serious! Well, I try not to be an alarmist, but when it comes down to it I have to protect my family and be of use to my Lord. He helps me with both. How did people in the Bible know what to do? They knew the Word of God and they knew the voice of God that comes to us through Holy Spirit. They were also sent prophets that called them back to God when they strayed. Deuteronomy 28:1-2 And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. Why do we have to know His voice if He gives us His commands? The commands are for every day lifegenerally, this is how we live. His voice is specific and in agreement with His commands. He will never ask you to do something that violates His commands. Examples of hearing the voice are in the book of Acts. Acts 21:11 And coming to us, he took Paul s belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, Thus says the Holy Spirit, This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. Acts 11:28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). These were public times when the voice of the Lord came through a specific person, a prophet. But the primary way we were designed to hear the Lord was directly from Him. Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts. If the Lord searches our innermost being, we can rely on Him to respond to us. He shows us our true condition. But is that all? Do you think the only time

7 S T E P S the Lord speaks to us, to you, is so He can point out all our sin. Sounds cruel. He is a good Father and also, He is love. He also speaks specifically. This may happen by showing a verse or section of Scripture. It may happen by Him giving His peace as we cast our cares on Him. It may happen by giving us a picture in our minds, any number of ways. All these ways can be trusted and will be trusted as we know the Word. Why all the background on the Bible and hearing God? Because in a time when so many voices are clamoring to be heard, how will you know which way you should go? The voice of the Lord in your life either affirms or negates the voices we are hearing elsewhere. So what is the Lord saying about preparedness? Wisdom is ready for adversity. Prudence takes care of business. This sight gives a general list of basic needs and what if supplies. It only calls for three days of water and food. A couple of years ago some people on our road were without power for two weeks! Where would you get water without power? We ve seen the hurricane stories. Shelves are cleaned out very fast. Is there some merit to having more? What if the whole community were without power and fuel in the winter? Can you heat your home without power. Are you aware most gas furnaces today require power to run? Am I crazy? No, there are six people living in my home besides adults. They depend on Bev and I to take care of them. They depend on us to keep them safe. They depend on us to manage our resources to be able to do so. We don t think in these terms because we haven t had to. But, in times when what we have come to expect may be in jeopardy, we must take care of those we love. It goes without saying that if we take care of ourselves we will be in a better position to help others. 1Peter 3:15 But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, When things in our world fall apart, when the support systems stop holding lives together, when the false hope gives way to crisis, when people steal just to live, it s an opportunity to show love, real love and generosity. Let s remember that giving someone a gift as unto the Lord is doing it for Him. If preparedness means I have some to give, that s preparedness. If I don t have enough to give perhaps I don t have enough to survive. I m sure there is more to say about this. But for now let s conclude with the topic of deeper fellowship among Christians. Being prepared for crisis we accomplish some very good things. For starters, deeper fellowship means I know you and you know me. Fellowship is not, I remember when I was stuck like you, but holding the Word of God in high regard we turn to it to see our solutions. By the Word we actually care for each other and meet the deeper needs of the heart. Deeper Christian fellowship gives people who don t know Jesus a place to land. Deeper fellowship is accommodating to others. Deeper Christian fellowship helps in being prepared because as brothers and sisters we can prepare as a team instead of individuals. Our individualistic society says I have to have all the bases covered. Can you say expensive! But a group of neighbors (within walking distance) can prepare together and help each other weather a crisis. In the process you will meet neighbors that you never knew. Some may have little desire for your church, but will be very interested in you helping them with critical needs. They may be in a position to help you as well. Accepting their helps shows humility. There is much more I could write to you on these topics. You may want to take your own steps of further exploration and action. Here s another step, Pastor Jim Pastor Jim s recommended reading for the month: Walking from East to West: God in The Shadows by Ravi Zacharias For more than three decades, apologist Ravi Zacharias has shared bits and pieces of his personal life and experience. He has traveled from the East to the West, and then back again to answer skeptics penetrating questions about the meaning of life and the existence of a God who is there for his children. Zacharias invites you to follow him on this journey through his life and into the lives of others, and to see how he has become more convinced with each year that Jesus Christ is the one who came to give you life to the fullest.
