Sundays, 10am, Centennial Room Do you know someone who would like to know about the Lutheran Christian teachings or would you like to have a refresher class? A new Getting to Know Jesus class is being held, wherein we search the Scriptures to look at the basics of the Christian faith. This class offers a great opportunity for individuals to learn more about the Lutheran Christian teachings (doctrine), either as a refresher from their confirmation instruction or in preparation to join the Lutheran Church. If you or someone you know is interested in taking this class, please contact the church office or just come to the Centennial Room on Sunday mornings. Young Men's Bible Study Sundays, 10am, classroom #206 Led by various instructors, this informal study is during the Sunday educational hour! Tell your friends! Thanksgiving Services Nov. 22 & 23 Is there anything you have that has not come from God? Based on Deuteronomy 8:1-10, our focus will lead us to ask, "What exactly does God give?" Can you imagine what a joy it would have been to have heard the words of the Prophet Isaiah year after year and then to come face to face with the reality of those prophecies being fulfilled at the birth of Jesus? Join us this Advent season as we spend time with the Prophet Isaiah as he helps us to understand the meaning and background of some of the well-known prophecies that God sent him to share with His people. And then when we gather at 2

3 the manger on Christmas Eve, we can join in boldly singing: How should I not have known Isaiah would be there, his prophecies fulfilled? With pounding heart I stare: A child, a son, the Prince of Peace for me, A child, a son, the Prince of Peace for me. Older Adult Ministry will sponsor coffee and rolls following the morning services in the fellowship hall. Everyone is welcome. Advent dinners sponsored by various groups (Nov Music Ministry; Dec. 6 - Alaska Mission Team; Dec. 13 Youth) will be served from 5-6:30pm in the fellowship hall. Please prepare your hearts for the coming of our Savior by worshiping at the midweek services. Advent Devotions (from Lutheran Hour Ministries) LHM booklets, Love Came Down, available NOW Courtesy of the St. John Board of Elders, copies of LHM devotions are at the desk in the narthex and at the materials shelf in the west entrance of the church. Please feel free to take copies to share with your relatives, friends, and neighbors. Persons with internet access are encouraged to print their own devotions by going to Those with internet may choose other options for accessing this booklet or other devotions as well. Our Elders hope these devotions will be helpful in preparing your hearts and minds for the coming celebration of the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. This year s booklets have a layout/printing glitch that wasn t detected prior to printing. We get the booklets from an outside source and there was no plan to reprint them. On Sat, Dec. 9, we will be blessed to have families whose children attend the Center worshipping with us, as well as to have the children sharing the gift of song that evening. Sunday School & Bible Class Schedule The Pre-School Sunday School Christmas Program will be Sun., Dec. 17, at 10am in the fellowship hall. There will be NO Fellowship Hall Bible Study on Dec. 17 due to Christmas Program. There will be NO Sunday School or Bible classes on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 3

General News Nominations for Director of Christian Education If you would like to have the search committee consider a candidate to serve St. John as a fulltime Director of Christian Education, there is a nomination form and position description available in the church office. Children-led Christmas Service Practices The children of St. John Lutheran Church in grades 3-8 who do not attend day school at St. John will soon/or already have received a mailing inviting them to come to church to practice the Children-led Christmas Service on Wednesdays, Nov. 29 & Dec. 6 and if they RSVP that they can attend the service they should come on Dec. 13, from 3:45 5pm. The service, Lessons and Carols, will be held on Sun., Dec. 17, at 5pm. If you do not receive the mailing, please contact the church office and feel free to attend the rehearsals. Special Note: Due to the increased enrollment at St. John Lutheran School, limited resources, and available practice times, the ministry staff is able to accommodate only the students in grades 3-8 who do not attend St. John Lutheran School. Time to Order Poinsettias and Wreaths Deadline for ordering is NOON on Mon., Dec. 4. Now is the time to order Poinsettias and Wreaths to place around our sanctuary for the Christmas Season. Order blanks are in the November monthly newsletter, in the weekly bulletins, on the church website, in the narthex and west entrance or in the church office. Poinsettias are $19 and wreaths are $20. See order blank for details. Christmas Cash St. John has a special fund called Christmas Cash. As you shop for loved ones and friends, remember the opportunity to provide a little holiday cheer in the lives of congregation members. You may donate money by designating extra giving on your weekly offering envelopes. Names of individuals and families that have had a challenging year are collected by the ministry staff. At Christmas time, the money is divided among the names collected, and those individuals/families receive a surprise cash gift from St. John members. Many families have been blessed by this fund, and we appreciate your kind giving. 4

5 Buy Georgia Pecans and Support the Alaska Mission Team This weekend after worship services, by the elevator Just in time for Holiday baking or gift-giving, the 2018 Alaska Mission Team is selling fresh Georgia pecans (halves, pieces, chocolate covered, turtles, and cinnamon). The halves & pieces come in 16oz bags and are $11/bag. The chocolate covered (dark or milk chocolate) come in 12oz bags and are $10/bag. The turtles and cinnamon come in 10oz bags and are $10/bag. Contact Pam Peters at or Christmas Card and Note Card Sales by Alaska Mission Team This weekend after worship services, by the elevator The 2018 Alaska Mission Team has Christmas Cards, Note Cards, and Necklaces to sell to support the team s fund raising. The Christmas Cards feature artwork by Gary Faszholz. The Note Cards and Necklaces feature artwork by Kari Anderson, Door County, WI artist, and are wonderful for holiday gift-giving. Warm Clothing Collection for Concordia Students (sponsored by Student Ministry Board) Through Dec. 6, west entrance The Student Ministry Board will again be collecting warm clothing, (gloves and mittens, scarves, coats, jackets, boots, etc.) for CUNE students. As you get out your warmer clothing, set aside the things you no longer need that might help Concordia students from warmer climate zones who do not have adequate clothing for Nebraska winters. Thank you for your anticipated response. Operation Christmas Child Collection week is Nov. 13 Nov. 19, 12pm, drop off at St. John Narthex or Hillcrest E-Free Church This year, St. John is participating in OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD through Samaritans Purse! Shoeboxes include a WOW item, personal care items, clothing/accessories, toys and crafts, a personal note or photo and $9 to cover the shipping costs. You can use your own shoebox or pick one up in the narthex (NOW available). If you do not desire to make a shoebox, you are welcome to donate towards this mission. For more information, a detailed description of what can be included in the boxes, or to drop off your filled boxes, visit the table in the narthex or speak with Joseph Hope-Hull (joseph.hopehull@cune.org). Join the Ministry of St. John in Marching in the Seward Lighted Christmas Parade! Saturday, Nov. 25, line-up at 5:10pm, 1 st Street Join the Ministry of St. John in proclaiming the real Reason for the Season during the Lighted Christmas Parade! You and your child are invited to walk along with St. John's float. Children may wear simple shepherd or angel costumes (think bathrobes and towels), but this is not required. Parents of very young children, please plan to walk the parade route with us. Many families walk with the float until 8 th Street, then sit to watch the rest of the parade. Walkers need to be at the parade site by 5:10. (We will know our official site closer to the date, but it will be on 1 st Street.) 6 November Is Diabetes Awareness Month (sponsored by the St. John Parish Health Ministry) Nov. 18/19, west entrance Pick up resources to learn your risk, and to learn more about diabetes and pre-diabetes. A reliable website for information, recipes, and meal planning tools is Butter Braids CDC Fundraiser Nov. 20 Dec. 6, The Child Development Center will be selling Butter Braid Frozen Pastry Dough. Seven varieties are available for purchase, each are $11. Delivery will be on Dec. 19, perfect for a Christmas morning treat! Please see a CDC family to order or call Thanksgiving Day Dinner Thurs., Nov. 23, 12pm, fellowship hall On Thanksgiving Day, St. John will host a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in the fellowship hall beginning at 12pm for the Seward community. If you are able to help by providing a salad, pie, roasted turkey, or by helping to serve, see the signup sheets in the church narthex. Please plan to attend the dinner and invite others to join us for good food and fellowship. If you need a ride for the event, please call the church office ( ) by 5pm on Tues., Nov. 21 to schedule transportation. Everyone is welcome! Thanksgiving Dinner Donations (from the Human Care Board) If you are already donating food for the St. John Thanksgiving Dinner this year or have volunteered your time, please note the following times: cooked turkeys should be delivered, with their juices, to the church kitchen no later than 3pm on Wed., Nov. 22; salads and pies should be left in the church kitchen by at least 9am on Thursday morning; please label your containers with your name; food preparation will start at 8:30am on Thanksgiving Day. Sincere thanks to all the generous donations of food and time this year. Sharing Our Abundance - Thanksgiving Food Offering Wed., Nov. 22, 7pm & Thurs., Nov. 23, 9am We are invited to share our abundance with the needy by bringing grocery items to the Thanksgiving services. All non-perishable groceries and supplies are encouraged. Please leave your donations in the shopping carts located in the narthex as you arrive for the Thanksgiving services. The collected items will go to Christ's Cupboard, St. John's Client Choice Food Pantry. Let s put an extra item or two on our grocery lists to donate to those in need! Sorters Needed for Thanksgiving Food Offering Fri., Nov. 24, 9:30am, narthex We need help sorting the food donated to Christ's Cupboard, St. John's Client Choice Food Pantry. This is a fun opportunity for both families and individuals to serve here at St. John. The more help we have, the sooner we will be done. Sorting should take approximately an hour. 7 LWL Christmas Banquet Invitation Tues., Dec. 5, 6:30pm, fellowship hall, $8.50 tickets (through Nov. 26) The Savior Comes is the theme for the LWL Christmas Banquet. Rev. Ratcliffe will speak on the theme, and Concordia's Man Choir, directed by Paul Soulek, will perform. Tickets are $8.50 for the Windsor loin meal catered by Sparetime. Recruit your team for Seward s most fun night of the year! Your team writes answers to questions in ten themed rounds, such as Sports, Movies, History, Bible or Food. Between rounds, bid at the silent auction, visit the cash bar or play Dead or Alive. Bring favorite snacks for your table. Dress up your team and table to win the Spirit Award. The team with the most correct trivia answers wins $320; second place wins $160. All proceeds go to St. John PTL. Cost is $160 per table ($20 per person) or $150 per table if paid in advance. They are in need of these items for the bags: hand warmers; new or slightly used warm hats, gloves, socks for adults; toothbrush; toothpaste; razors; shampoo; soap; conditioner; deodorant; hand wipes; and granola bars. Lincoln Lutheran (Community) Choir Presents: 500: Reformed Sun., Nov. 19, 3pm, Grace Lutheran Church, 2225 Washington ST, Lincoln This fall we celebrate 500 years of Martin Luther s Reformation that began with his 95 theses. To commemorate that historical event the choir will be presenting Reformationfocused literature, the centerpiece of which is J.S. Bach s BWV 80, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God). The choir has invited soloists and, for the Lincoln concert, a chamber orchestra and All City Girls Chorus to more fully express our enthusiasm in sharing the music for this milestone celebration. As always, the concert will include congregational singing to uplift all of our voices and hearts in celebration. Come join us for this very special and commemorative celebration! Be a St. John Bell Ringer and Help Raise Funds to Assist Families in Need Sat., Nov. 25, 9am-9pm (St. John s day to serve as Salvation Army bell ringers in front of Wal-Mart) The Seward Ministerial Association is once again coordinating volunteers to ring the bells by the Salvation Army Kettle out at Wal-Mart. Ninety percent of the funds raised come back to Seward to assist individuals and families in need. The remaining 10% is reserved for local disaster assistance. St. John has committed to providing the volunteers for Sat., Nov. 25. One hour shifts are available from 9am-9pm. Bring your family or come with a friend and ring for a one hour shift. Thank you. Trivia Night Silent Auction Donations As part of the trivia night festivities, we will be hosting a silent auction. All capital campaign expenses will be covered.
