2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. And you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Let us pray: All: Lord, we confess before you and before one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole hearts, nor loved our neighbors as ourselves. Our sin is ever before us, and we are powerless to overcome it. But you conquered sin and death through the cross, and so we bring our confession to you, still hoping in your unending mercy.(silent prayer) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Friends, believe the Good News. 5 WELCOME Our congregation has been welcoming members and visitors to worship on the Lord s Day since March 16, If you are visiting this morning, we extend a special welcome to you and invite you to introduce yourself to one of the pastors or speak with an usher if you have any questions. If you are looking for a church home and would like to talk with one of the pastors, please fill out the fellowship pad in the pew today or call the church office. Today s Music: Our soloist for this morning s service is Jim Williams, one of the section leaders in the choir, and a youth group leader at GPC. The anthem is a setting of the text Take My Life and Let It Be written by Frances Ridely Havergal ( ). She was a prolific hymn writer, many of which are still in use today, this hymn text being perhaps the most well known of her works. The flowers in the Chancel today are given to the glory of God. The ushers for June are Cristian Lopez (Captain), Nancy Benzing, Gillian Frey, Mildred Grant, Mary Margaret Hart, Shelley Jennings, Matt Lavin, Jennifer Lopez, Gerardo Martinez, Deborah McFadden, Priscila Rodriguez, Nat Semple, Laura Welch, and Marjorie West. Today after the service all are invited to join us in the Georgetown Room for Punch Bunch hosted by the Hospitality Committee. Assisted listening devices may be found at the back of the sanctuary. Each device comes with a headset, but you may bring your own from home to plug in. Please let the ushers know if you have any problems. Children s Worship During the service, Children s Worship continues after Time with Children. Pre-K goes upstairs to Early Children s Worship K-2nd grades go downstairs to Intermediate Children s Worship 3rd-5th grades go to the Chapel for Older Children s Worship Children should be collected by their parents immediately after the service. All children are welcome to remain with their families in the service and ageappropriate worship bags are available in the narthex.

6 ANNOUNCEMENTS Highlights Today s Guest Preacher Rev. Dr. Kenyatta R. Gilbert As the son and grandson of Baptist preachers, Kenyatta Gilbert knew he would charter his own distinct course and find his vocational home in a courtroom practicing law one day. As it turns out, he did walk in their footsteps but not without his own unique voice. When Kenyatta found himself at Princeton Theological Seminary, having accepted his call to ministry, he assumed his next role would be one of pastor. But within those hallowed halls, he also discovered a second love teaching. After completing his Ph.D. in Homiletics (the study of preaching), Kenyatta found a way to pursue both passions. This year marks Kenyatta s 12 th year of teaching preaching at Howard University School of Divinity. Few things bring him greater joy than helping his students find their unique and authentic preaching voice. His love of preaching, teaching, and researching have provided fuel for his first book, The Journey and Promise of African American Preaching (Fortress). Kenyatta is founder of The Preaching Project (thepreachingproject.org) and research collaborator for Equipping the Saints: Promising Practices in Black Congregational Life, a national study funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc. His recent book, is A Pursued Justice: Black Preaching from the Great Migration to Civil Rights (Baylor), and his third publication was Exodus Preaching: Crafting Sermons about Justice and Hope (Abingdon). Kenyatta is married to Dr. Allison Blow Gilbert, a pediatrician. The Gilberts have three daughters: Olivia Copeland, Ella Jane, and Ava Sage. Highlights Calling Senior Adults The Session wants to learn your thoughts about what GPC could offer to better meet the needs and interests of senior adults. Other DC area churches successfully offer programs and activities ranging from social, to educational to mission driven work. If you are interested in participating or sharing your ideas, please join us for an upcoming focus group to further explore the possibilities. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the day, and break that fast with a meal called an "iftar" in the evening.
