5 Today s Music: The music for Born.United. Sent. traces the development of Western music from the earliest melodies of medieval plainchant, through to the 21st century. Today, we begin this exploration with a couple of the most well-known plainchant melodies, in particular Conditor alme siderum heard in several forms throughout the service. We don t know exactly what the music of the Bible sounded like, but these plainchant melodies give us a likely glimpse as they evolved through time from the singing practices of the early Christian church. Before the invention of music notation, these melodies were taught and passed along by rote. A large repertoire of tunes developed, driving the need for a way to write them down in order to disseminate them and thus, leading to music notation. Next week, we ll hear the earliest attempts to add voices to these single line chants, in a type of music known as organum. Flowers: The flowers in the Chancel today are given to the glory of God. If you have any questions, don t hesitate to ask them. Assisted listening devices can be found in the back of the Sanctuary in a marked basket. Please join us after worship for a time of fellowship and food. Children are always welcome! If you need to step out, there is a room near the front doors with a television which shows the service, and resources for small children. For older children, there are purple bags near the front doors with coloring supplies. For our youngest children through 2 years old, child care is available upstairs beginning at 9:30am. After the Time with Children in the service, children can remain with their families, or exit the Sanctuary with one of the pastors to continue age-appropriate worship. Please feel free to escort your children to their classroom to meet the leaders. More information is available in the Order of Worship.
