2 Leader: I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. People: And you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Leader: Let us pray: All: Dear God, we confess to you that we are living lives that fall short of your plans for us. You have created us to know you, but we are distracted by the busyness and drama of life. You have created us to be stewards of your creation, but we exploit our resources and our brothers and sisters for selfish ends. You have created us to love, but we find it easier to fear. Forgive our distracted, selfish, fearful souls. Help us to die to our sin and live with open hearts, open minds, and open hands. (Silent prayer) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the Good News. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. GLORIA PATRI (Glory to God, #581) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 3 OFFERTORY The Call Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) André Darvasan-Stanciu, baritone DOXOLOGY (Glory to God, #607) Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Nicene Creed I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds; God of God; Light of Light; Very God of Very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures; and ascended into heaven; and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the lord and giver of life; who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the father and the son together is worshipped and glorified; who spake by the prophets. And I believe in the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the death; and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER INVITATION AND GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Prayer continues

4 Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer continues PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Today s prayer was written by a Leadership Intensive participant. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD Jesus, Lamb of God, Have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, Have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, Grant us peace. DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS All are welcome to come forward to share in the bread and cup. Please come forward, one row at a time, up the center aisle and return via the side aisle. 5 Today s Music: The Call is from the Five Mystical Songs, a collection of Easter poems written by 17 th Century English poet and Anglican Priest, George Herbert, and set to music by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Gordon Jacob, the composer of today s prelude, was as a student of Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music in London. This piece features the commanding Watkins Trumpet. Cantilena was written by German composer Joseph Rheinberger. He began playing for church at age seven and his first composition was performed the following year. Amongst his many compositions, he wrote 20 organ sonatas in 20 different keys. Cantilena, a slow movement from his Sonata No. 11, has been arranged for organ and cello. Allegro Maestoso, also known as Hornpipe, is a transcription from Handel s Water Music which was originally performed by 50 musicians on a royal barge in the river Thames for King George I in Legend has it that the King enjoyed it so much, he ordered it to be repeated at least three times! A note on the Prayers for the People: Each Sunday this summer will feature a prayer written by a member of the Spring Leadership Intensive. Listen with fresh ears to the prayers today! The flowers in the Chancel today are given by Chip and Joan Filson in celebration of American Democracy, especially as expressed in F.D.R. s Four Freedoms speech. The ushers for July are Alex Bullock, Captain; Elizabeth Avery, Doug Hillhouse, Karl Mattison, Lauren Mattison, Charlotte Mattison, Lewis Mattison, Eva Mattison, Jack Porter, and Russell Porter. Today after the service all are invited to join us for Punch Bunch on the porch to celebrate the 4th, hosted this week by Laura Welch. Assisted listening devices may be found at the back of the sanctuary. Each device comes with a headset, but you may bring your own from home to plug in. Please let the ushers know if you have any problems. Readings are from the New Revised Standard Version translation of the Bible unless otherwise indicated. Blue Bibles are located at the end of each pew.
