Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Ask God to give kids opportunities to be peacemakers. Pray that He would help them know when and how to be part of the solution when it comes to conflict. And pray that God would guide your conversation with your few as they navigate applying today s truths. 9:00 & 11:30 Just For Fun Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and working as a group What You Need: Index cards or half sheets of paper, pencils, a timer or mobile device What You Do: Give each student a pencil and index card or sheet of paper. Tell students they ll have two minutes to write names of people who have helped others, as many as they can think of during the time limit. Names can include: o Generic names and occupations: mom, dad, policeman o Specific names: Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr. o Fictional names: Spiderman, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Kristof, o The people can be dead or alive, fiction or real. After time is up, let one student volunteer to read a few names or titles off of his list. The rest of the students should cross out any names the volunteer reads that are also on their own lists. Continue letting students take turns reading off a few names while the rest of the group crosses off the duplicates. The student with the most names/titles left on his/her list is the winner! What You Say: People play all kinds of roles in our lives. I do hope that this activity has helped you to see just how important all people are in your life. Let s go to Large group to see how we can honor others by choosing peace. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 2
10:15 Get Your Head in the Game What You Need: Plastic cups; 6 for every 8 kids, lasso ; one for every 8 kids, mobile device What You Do: Divide the group into teams of 8 Give each group six plastic cups, prepared rubber band and string lasso Tell kids they get to work together to build towers using the cups provided. The trick is that they have to use only the strings to expand the rubber band to pick up the cups and place them on the pyramid. They cannot use their hands to touch the cups in any way. They must start with a single stack of six cups. They cannot line the cups up to make the building easier. For a visual go to: Wrap Up and Say: Building these pyramids was a challenge. You had to work together, and everyone had to do his part. To live in peace, everyone has to do his or her part, too. Let s head to Large Group to hear a Bible Truth about someone who worked very hard to keep the peace. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 3

CG: 252 Movie Clip COMMUNICATOR SCRIPT INTRODUCTION COMMUNICATOR: Quick public service announcement. Today we have a new element to our Large Group time and that is your fill-in sheets. Take those out right now because you re going to use them throughout this message. I don t know if I ever told you this but I love movies. All kinds. Old movies like The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars. New movies like The Lego Batman Movie and... Star Wars. Give me a big bowl of butter lovers popcorn and a good flick... and I am set! I know I m not the only one in the room who loves movies. Everyone gather with your Small Groups and tell them your all-time favorite movie. Communicator allows groups time to discuss their favorite movies. Once groups finish, allow a couple of kids to share their favorite movies. Those are all great movies. If I may weigh in, my favorite movie is Toy Story. I know, I know... it s a kids movie. But it s so good! If you haven t already seen it, it s this story about a bunch of toys that belong to boy named Andy. The center of Andy s affection was a pull-string sheriff named Woody. Woody was the top of the heap when it came to the toy hierarchy! However, this all changes when a new toy shows up at the house, a Buzz Lightyear space ranger action figure. Woody clearly does not appreciate the attention Buzz gets, but spoiler alert eventually Woody overcomes his feelings of jealousy to become friends with Buzz. The only part of Toy Story I do not like is when Woody and Buzz fight and don t get along. Once they become friends, I want them to be bros with no disagreements. All of us desire peace even if it doesn t always feel that way. Peace is what makes us truly joyful. Here s your first fill-in, and always what we ve been talking about this month. CG: Fill-in #1 Slide Peace is proving you care more about each other than winning an argument. When I watch Toy Story and see them argue, I feel like I m witnessing a couple of my buddies squabbling with no way to make it stop. Everyone else in the movie Bo Peep, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex just watches without stopping the fight. TENSION COMMUNICATOR: And you know what? Now I think about it, I m the same when my real-life friends don t get along. For example, I ve played countless games of basketball with classmates when a fight breaks out between them. In the heat of competition, it s like they forget about their friendship. Then I m standing there thinking, I should break them up, but instead, I just watch them. It s like my mind knew what to do but my body refused to act. 6
Have you ever had friends argue with each other? Maybe it was over something small like not sharing a pencil during math class. Maybe it was something really wrong like not sharing answers on a test. What did you want to do when two people you care about were coming to blows? What did you do? I m going to guess that there are others in this room who have had similar experiences. Many times you don t want to take sides because you don t want one friend to feel like you care about him more or less. Or you don t want to get sucked into the drama. It is not easy to jump into a bad situation. There was this lady a long time ago who witnessed two guys about to come to blows in the Old Testament. She did something really cool to intervene. Let s spend time exploring this event because I think we can all learn from her example. Communicator pulls out three bags labeled DAVID, NABAL, and ABIGAIL with supplies in the appropriate bags. TRUTH COMMUNICATOR: God had chosen David as the new king of Israel. However, Saul was still king and did not like David. As a result, David and his men often hid in the wilderness from Saul. One season, they camped near the massive herds of a wealthy man named Nabal. Anyone with sheep and goats were at great risk of thieves and wild, hungry animals. But David and his men took it upon themselves to protect Nabal s shepherds and flocks. Communicator moves to the bag labeled DAVID and moves a shield and sword from David s bag into Nabal s bag. Nabal enjoyed a season of prosperity and growth with David s assistance. During sheep shearing, David decided to send ten men to Nabal with specific instructions. Check out what he told his men to say: (Open Bible and read 1 Samuel 25:6-8, NIrV.) May you live a long time! May everything go well with you and your family! And may things go well with everything that belongs to you! I hear that you are clipping the wool off your sheep. When your shepherds were with us, we treated them well. The whole time they were at Carmel nothing that belonged to them was stolen. Ask your own servants. They ll tell you. We ve come to you now at a happy time of the year. Please be kind to my men. Please give me and my men anything you can find for us. David was looking for a little bit of gratitude from a man who was very wealthy and had abundance. Communicator pulls out bread, donuts, snack cakes, beef jerky, and water jug from NABAL s bag and places it right back in NABAL s bag. COMMUNICATOR: Nabal flat out rejected their request and refused to give them meat, bread, or water. When David s men reported this to their leader, he was furious He told 400 of his men, (Open Bible and read 1 Samuel 25:13b.) Each of you put on your swords! (NIrV). And just like that (Snap fingers.), this happy bond between these two groups had ended. David was ready to fight with his soldiers to end Nabal. 7
One of the herdsmen caught wind of David s plan and rushed to tell Nabal s wife, Abigail. This servant did not mince his words. He pointed out David s men treated the shepherds with kindness, but Nabal returned the favor with rudeness and disrespect. Good had been repaid with evil. Trouble was brewing, and David was only getting madder as he approached Nabal s home. Abigail was quick to respond. She packed up 200 loaves of bread, five sheep ready for cooking, a bushel of cooked grain, 100 raisin cakes, 200 fig cakes, and drinks. With her goods on the backs of donkeys, she intercepted David and his men before they arrived at Nabal s. Abigail jumped off her steed and bowed before David out of respect. She humbly spoke, (Open Bible and read 1 Samuel 25: ) Pardon your servant, sir. Please let me speak to you. Listen to what I m saying. Let me take the blame myself. Please don t pay any attention to that evil man Nabal. His name means Foolish Person. And that s exactly what he is. He s always doing foolish things. I m so sorry I didn t get a chance to see the men you sent, (NIrV). From there, she continued by blessing David and giving them the large load of goods. Communicator takes water, bread, donuts, snack cakes, and beef jerky out of the ABIGAIL bag and places them in the DAVID bag. COMMUNICATOR: David s anger eased. Her words were disarming and welcoming. When David spoke, he showered blessings on Abigail for what she had done. On top of that, she protected Nabal and their home as a result of her intervention. David sent Abigail home with gratitude and accepted her gifts as a token of peace. APPLICATION COMMUNICATOR: Things between David and Nabal quickly spiraled out of control. This was brewing into something much bigger than a tiff between a space ranger action figure and a pull-string cowboy. Rather, this was turning into war with 400 armed men ready to take care of business. If nobody stopped them, Nabal and his servants would have been nixed finite WIPED OUT. But that s not what happened, and here s a fill-in. CG: Fill-in #2 Abigail chose to step in and do something about. She defused the argument Even though it wasn t her fight, she recognized how bad this situation was because of her husband. She apologized and offered gifts. Because she acted as the peacemaker, she kept the peace between David and her family. This isn t always easy, but, and here s your next fill-in, CG Fill-in #3 Deciding in advance I will be a part of the solution instead of the problem helps me keep the peace. Think about your own friends and people you see every day. When situations turn to drama, do you try to keep the peace or do you cheer on the fight? Do you choose words to calm the anger or do you make the situation worse by adding your own angry words? 8
We aren t suggesting you jump in the middle of something and risk your own safety, but you could yell, Stop! You could seek out an adult for help. All of us in this room can be part of the solution to make peace between friends, classmates, teammates, family, and neighbors. CG: Fill-in # 4 Fourth fill-in coming at you, I am part of the solution when I choosing to be the voice of reason in unreasonable situations. LANDING COMMUNICATOR: There is the great verse in Romans we ve been learning throughout the month. I want to encourage everyone with it today. CG: Memory Verse Slide It says, Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification, (NIV). Here s your last fill-in CG: Fill-in #5 A big part of keeping the peace is using wisdom when you enter an argument or help to solve the issue. Let s talk more about this in Small Group. CG: Key Question Slide As you head to your Small Groups, ask yourself this question: What are ways you can be a peacemaker? Today s Bottom Line, and your last fill-in. CG: Fill-in #6 Prove you care more about others by being part of the solution. Before you all leave, let s pray. Communicator leads group in a prayer related to what they just heard then dismisses them to small group. SFX: Play high-energy music as the kids exit. 9
