Gotta Serve Somebody Bible: Gotta Serve Somebody (Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet) John 13:1-17 Bottom Line: Serve others because of what Jesus did for us. Memory Verse: Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all Mark 9:35, NIV Life App: Service Lending a hand to help someone else Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Ask God to help kids understand that we serve others because of what Jesus did for us. Pray that God will show them that to be first, you must be last. Ask God to give you insight on how to show them what this can look like in their lives. 9:00 & 11:30 C-H-O-R-E-S What You Need: Wastepaper basket, wads of scrap paper or tissue paper What You Do: Set the wastepaper basket in the middle of the room. Invite one kid to stand anywhere he likes and throw a paper into the basket. (Choose a child who is likely to get it in!) Then let all the other kids have a chance to stand where that child did and throw papers into the basket. If kids get it in, great! If not, each missed shot earns kids a letter: C, H, O, R, E, S After the first round, ask another kid to demonstrate a shot. They can stand anywhere in the room and throw the paper however they want. Once they get it in, all the other kids must try for the same shot. If anyone misses six shots and gets all the letters of CHORES, they have to sit on the sidelines until the game is finished. At the end of the game, everyone cooperates to clean up the remaining papers on the floor. What You Say: What did the letters in our game spell? That s right: CHORES! We don t always like to clean, scrub, wash, put away, vacuum, sweep, wipe, or fold. [Transition] In Large Group we re going to hear about how to put all of those chores under one word that might change everything. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 2

10:15 Early Arriver What You Need: Check Please Activity Pages, pens or pencils What You Do: Give each kid a check and a pen or pencil. Ask, If you could order any food from any restaurant, what would it be? Instruct them to write down everything they would love to order on their check. Encourage them to share their ideas aloud with the group. What You Say: It s always fun to dream about all of the things that you want or even all of the things that you want others to do for you. In large group today, though, we re going to hear a word that might help us to put some of our wants into perspective. It could be a game changer. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 3

CG: Theme Loop Video CG: Countdown Video CG: Theme Video Host enters, wearing an apron. He carries a pot in one hand and a dishtowel in the other. Opener HOST: Welcome to the Hideout Diner! If it s food you re lookin for, look no further than our door! We got bun pups, frog sticks, and chicks on a raft! We can even burn one, take it through the garden, and pin a rose on it! You want a flop two with a cup of mud? A jack benny with a houseboat on the side? You got it! Anyone out there hungry? Want some tasty treats? Shout it out: what s your favorite food? Every time someone shouts out a favorite food, ring the desk call bell and shout out something like, Yeah, with cheese! or, Come and get it! After a handful of favorite foods are suggested, ding the bell multiple times to get everyone s attention. We re eatin good in the neighborhood, because here at the [your environment s name] Diner, we are at your service! What IS service? CG: Life App Video Service is lending a hand to help someone else. 6 After you serve all those hash browns and milkshakes and fries to your customers, the job s not quite done, is it? (Pause for response.) Nope. Those dishes aren t going to wash themselves. Plop the pot into one of the dishwashing bins. Raise your hand if you ve ever had to wash the dishes at your house. Maybe you don t have to actually physically wash them, but I m guessing that you do have to either load or unload, am I right? That s a great way to lend a hand and serve... even if it is a little gross. Take the pot out of the bin, and slowly pour water out of the pot and back into the bin. Well, guess what. I m here to show you that serving doesn t have to be boring! As Mary Poppins once said, In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. And then she sang a song, I think. You can find a game in pretty much any chore there is! Let me show you what I m thinking. Two teams of five. Relay style. First person tosses the dish to the second person, who washes it in the soapy water bin. They hand it to the third person, who rinses the dish in the clean water bin. They hand it to the fourth person, who dries it off. Finally, they hand it to a fifth person, who runs and stacks the dish on the rack. Let s get our teams and play the Dish Scrub Relay! CG: Dish Scrub Relay Slide Choose two teams of five to compete. Two rules. One? Everyone on the team has to do their specific job. Two? The first person cannot toss the next dish to the second person until the last person has stacked the previous dish. That s it! On my Go, let s see who can clean up the fastest. The first team that has all their dishes tossed, washed, cleaned, dried, and stacked is the winner! Ready? Go! CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide Encourage the audience to cheer on the teams. Declare the winner and dismiss both teams to their seats. Nicely done! Service with a smile! Now, everyone smile and put your hands together, for the master kitchen manager, the server of wisdom.[historyteller s Name]! Host exits as Historyteller enters. SETTING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: Hey, everyone! Like [Host s name] said earlier, we re talking about service this month. CG: Service Slide Service is lending a hand to help someone else. It s deciding to put others first and choosing to do something FOR someone instead of just thinking about yourself. 6

Does that sound easy to you? (Pause for response.) Not really! I mean, it always feels good to help someone out, but the hard part is actually choosing to do it. The good news is Jesus gave us the perfect example of what it means to serve. He LIVED service 24/7. He fed people, healed people, prayed for people. He even gave up His life for people people like you and me. But there s one time in particular I d like to talk about today. (Hold up Bible.) Jesus did one very specific thing to demonstrate what service is all about, and it had to do with feet. Thankfully, we have two of the most spectacular feet in town standing right here. Please welcome [Host s name] and his feet! SFX: Big Stinky Feet by Kidz Crew, Brett Johnson (starting at 0:23) Host enters, bopping to the music. He s no longer wearing the apron. He walks over to the chair and sits down. That s beautiful. Here s the Truth. [Host s name], I ll let you know when we ll need your size nines. HOST: I m here to serve! SMELL YOU LATER HISTORYTELLER: A man named John was one of Jesus closest friends. John wrote down what happened on this one particular day. It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that it was almost time for Him to leave and go to heaven to be with His Father. Jesus loved His friends. He didn t want to leave them, but He knew that He had to. Jesus sent Peter and John ahead and asked them to prepare the Passover meal. He told the two men that as soon as they entered Jerusalem, they d find a man carrying a pitcher of water. Hold up the pitcher of water. Jesus told them to follow that guy to a house. The owner of the house would show them upstairs to a room that was already set up for them. Sure enough, Peter and John went into Jerusalem, and everything happened exactly how Jesus said it would. They got up to the room in the house and started preparing the meal. When Jesus arrived, everyone had gathered for the meal. All of the disciples were there probably talking, laughing, and telling stories. But there was something they had to do first. HOST: Right! Before one eats the tasty treats, one must deal with stinky feets. HISTORYTELLER: Ummmm... I don t think they said THAT. But you re right. People didn t wear shoes or boots back in Bible times. No socks, either. People mostly wore sandals, and they walked EVERYWHERE through mud, dirt, and whatever the animal in front of them decided to leave there. People s feet were disgusting! 7

And they didn t have chairs like these. Historyteller walks over to Host s chair. Historyteller sets the cushion on the floor in front of the table. Host gets off the chair and sits on the cushion, angling his feet to the side. They ate at long, low tables with cushions around them. That meant people s feet would be right next to where the person next to them was eating! HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? HISTORYTELLER: As you can imagine, people had to wash their feet before they could eat a meal like that. Normally a servant was supposed to do the foot washing... except, in this case, there were no servants around. That meant one of the disciples had to do the foot washing instead. It s quite possible that the disciples started arguing about which of them should do the servant s job. Maybe they figured the shortest one should do it. Or maybe the youngest. Host stands up and uses the tape measure to measure his height. Host picks up the giant lollipop. Or maybe the one who was the worst at holding their breath. Host gasps in some air and then quickly has to take another breath. Okay, it probably wasn t about THAT. But the point is, none of the disciples wanted to do the servant s job. None of them wanted to wash everyone s feet. Jesus decided to take matters into His own hands. Jesus took off His outer clothes and then wrapped a towel around His waist. He poured water into a large bowl. Then He began to wash His disciples feet. Historyteller pours the pitcher of water into the plastic bin. He adds some dish soap. Historyteller motions toward the bin of soapy water. Host stands up, takes off his shoes and socks, and then steps into the bin. 8

A PERFECT EXAMPLE HISTORYTELLER: It came time to wash Peter s feet. Jesus came over to him, and Peter was immediately taken aback. He said this. Lord,... are you going to wash my feet? Historyteller opens the Bible to John 13:6 (NIrV) and reads. Historyteller reads John 13:7-8 (NIrV). Jesus replied: You don t realize now what I am doing. But later you will understand.... Unless I wash you, you can t share life with me. Historyteller reads John 13:9 (NIrV). And Peter was like: Lord... not just my feet! Wash my hands and my head too! [Host s name], you can go ahead and step out now. All squeaky clean? HOST: (Sniffing feet) Whoa, nice! Is that vanilla? Historyteller places a towel on the ground next to the bin of water so Host can step onto it. He tosses the other towel to Host so he can use it to dry his feet. HISTORYTELLER: When Jesus finished washing everyone s feet, He returned to His place at the table and asked the disciples if they understood what He had just done for them. HOST: Oh! Ummmm... He washed their stinky feet. Historyteller turns to look at Host and pauses, awaiting a response. HISTORYTELLER: Oh, but it s so much more than that. Jesus explained it this way. Historyteller opens the Bible to John 13:14-15 (NIrV) and reads. I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another s feet. I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. HOST: We should... wash other people s feet? HISTORYTELLER: Well, foot washing isn t something we really do nowadays. But Jesus did it to set an example. He did it to show His friends and us that we should be willing to serve like He did. 9

(To audience) Let s give [Host s name] a big hand. (To Host) Thanks for your help, buddy! SFX: Big Stinky Feet by Kidz Crew, Brett Johnson (starting at 0:23) Host exits, carrying his socks and shoes. WRAPPING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: The truth is, sometimes we just don t WANT to serve. Instead, we think like the disciples probably did. We think we re too important. We think we re too busy. If we re honest, we don t want to do something that could be gross or uncomfortable. But none of those things mattered to Jesus. He gave us the perfect example of what it means to serve. Jesus, the Son of God, chose to take the place of a servant and wash everyone s stinky, smelly, disgusting feet. Not long after that, He chose to die on the cross for our sins so that if we believe and put our trust in Him, we can have a relationship with God that will last forever. Jesus chose to put US first. Our challenge is to follow His example and choose to serve the people around us. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] Serve others because of what Jesus did for us. Jesus served His disciples even though HE was the one who deserved to be served! We can serve others in the same way. Maybe not by offering to wash their feet that d be a little weird but we can lend a hand instead of thinking we re too important to help. We can choose to serve. Let s pray and ask God to help us do that. CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide Pray HISTORYTELLER: God, thank You for the example Jesus gave us when He washed His friends feet. We know there are lots of ways we can follow His lead and help the people around us. Would you please help us to see how we can serve, and give us the courage to lend a hand? We love You, and we ask these things in Jesus name, amen. If you have an offering with you today, you can bring that on up now. Now, up on your feet and be extra generous with your praise and worship to Go! Worship CG: Generation for You CG: Every Beat Host enters as Historyteller exits. 10

CG: One Heartbeat Closer HOST: Well, I feel totally refreshed after that wonderful foot bath! It s crazy to think that Jesus did that for His friends. He was willing to serve them by doing something NO ONE wanted to do! Serving looks like that sometimes. Sometimes it means doing something because you know it would help someone, even if you don t want to do it. The important thing is: it s not about you. It s about lending a hand to help someone else. It s about [Basic Truth] treating others the way you want to be treated. It might be doing your chores without being asked, helping your mom bring in the bags of groceries from the car, being kind to someone who maybe doesn t have that many friends, or taking time to listen to someone who s having a hard time. We can all choose to serve because we ve seen the example Jesus gave us. He gave His life for us. He showed us what it looks like to serve. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] Serve others because of what Jesus did for us. We re going to help you serve some neighbors. This whole month we will be collecting food for Katy Christian Ministries. Katy Christian Ministries is in need of donations after the holidays, and we want to help restock their shelves so parents can provide their children with the food they need. You and your family can help by bringing in one of the following items: Canned green vegetables, Canned fruit, Peanut butter, and Dried beans (1lb or less). You can drop off your donations, here in class. All of the items will be delivered to Katy Christian Ministries at the end of the month. We ll send you all home with a flyer that will help you tell your parents and family, and even friends. Wouldn t it be cool if we could get our neighbors in on the serving too?! Why don t you head to Small Group and talk about today s Bible Truth and other ideas you have on servingt? CG: Small Group Slide CG: Full Video (If needed) Dismiss children to their Small Groups. 11

Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (10 minutes) 9:00 & 11:30 Service Up What You Need: Diner hats, labels, markers, decorating materials What You Do: Give every kid a hat and a label. Encourage kids to place the label on one side of their hat. On the other side, ask them to write one way they will serve someone this week. Allow time for kids to decorate their hats. Instruct kids to sit in a circle. Encourage each to say share how they want to serve someone this week and what made them think of that idea. What You Say: You all have the most creative ideas to serve people! One of the best ways we can continue to learn how to serve others is to study how Jesus did it. Can you think of other examples from the Bible of ways Jesus served others? (This may be a difficult question for your group, so allow time for them to process and come up with ideas.) He set the best example by all He did for us. We can always be inspired to [Bottom Line] serve others because of what Jesus did for us. 12

10:15 Serve the Bacon What You Need: Knotted towel, Serve the Bacon Scenario Cards (one set per small group) What You Do: Divide your group into two teams, as evenly as possible. Line them up, facing each other, shoulder to shoulder, with about eight feet in between them. Walk down the line and number kids off. Do the same on the other side. Place the knotted towel in the middle of the open space between the teams, and then stand at the top of the line, near the ones, facing the towel. Call out two numbers. The first number is for the team on your right, and the second is for the team on your left. The kids with those numbers will rush to the center and try to grab the towel. The twist on Steal the Bacon is that each player is trying to give the towel to the opposite team by running to the line and handing the towel to one of the other teams players in order to serve them. Whichever team gets the towel answers one scenario card. If they give a correct answer, they get a point. Play until one team gets ten points. What You Say: This game was different than the way I ve played Steal the Bacon before. Usually, you re trying to steal that bacon or towel in the middle to get points for your team and win! But this time, you wanted to get points for the other team. Did that make you work harder to get the bacon or less hard? (Allow for discussion.) It can be difficult to serve with a smile and have a good attitude when you won t see the rewards of your hard work, or if the job is bigger than you thought. If you help make a meal for a neighbor with a new baby, that food isn t for you, but you still have to make the meal and clean the pots and pans. And then you might even have to carry all the food over to their house three heavy grocery bags for four blocks in the snow! Have you ever had a hard time serving when you knew that your work wouldn t help you at all, or when the job was way more difficult than you thought? (Allow for answers.) [Make It Personal] (Share about a time when you tried to serve someone else but it turned out to be a much bigger job than you had anticipated.) When we serve because it s easy to do or we get something out of it, that can still be nice. There s nothing wrong with that. But when we do a dirty job or a hard one with no reward, then we show we really can [Bottom Line] serve others because of what Jesus did for us. 13

All Service Times Pray and Dismiss (10 minutes) What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Ask kids to close their eyes and think of something Jesus has done for them that they are really thankful for. Together as a group, pray and thank Jesus for what He has done, and ask for help to live a life of service like Him. What You Say: Jesus, we are so thankful for all You have done for us. There are so many wonderful things You ve done, we wouldn t ever be able to keep count. May the many ways You ve served and loved others inspire us to do the same. Let us be reminded this week to [Bottom Line] serve others because of what Jesus did for us. We love You. We pray this in Your name, amen. As adults arrive to pick up, have each kid take off their diner hat and hold it up high. Prompt each kid to share how they are going to serve someone this week and remind them that they can [Bottom Line] serve others because of what Jesus did for us. 14
